Dog Soldier 8 . . . Coming This Wednesday 11-15-2017 At 9:00pm Eastern!!!

Jerry’s stance on choiless knives will always leave me baffled, particularly on small or mid-sized knives. That doesn’t quell my excitement for this particular blade, however.

I just weighed a B8LE on my digital postal scale and it came in at 12.7 ounces as well. I believe it to be accurate and thought it was interesting considering the .25 inch of added length, thicker stock and lack of fuller. I skipped the Mil overrun but won't skip this one with the comp finish option. IMO it is still damn hard to beat the B8LE. There have been a few deals on them on the exchange too due to people replacing them with the DS8.

Weird, I just got a chance to weigh my B8LE at home on my crappy analog scales and it came in at ~12.5oz, close enough to 12.7.

I thought for sure it would weigh a bit more than the DS8. My calipers mic'd it right at 0.2195" thick and the blade is spot on 8".

The lifeblood of SYKCO - vehicle to breed knives that lack a talon hole without risking the Busse trademark. Thank you, trademark, for keeping SYKCO alive and breathing :D

Jerry, is there any way that we can get a CHOILESS version of this?
I'm not a big fan of choils in general, but I have no problem with the choil on the DS8. It doesn't take up huge amounts of space and it lets you hold the knife right at the balance point.

The knife that needs a choil-less version is the B8. The choil-less B10 is great - I can still choke up on the ricasso just fine. The mini choil on the B4 was OK - I just ground off the talon hole to make a proper size choil. But the choil plus talon hole combination on the B8 isn't ergonomic and eats up a lot of real estate.

That full flat grind makes a big difference, doesn't it?
On thicker grinds, like the .350" thick HOGB8 yes, the FFG balances out that HOG blade...for the .210" thick DS8, Saber grind is the right call...it balances out and strengthens the thinner stock. Nothing to worry about with the DS8...I'm Whiskey Ready for tomorrows countdown

There are two ways to do this yourself. . .. . First, you're gonna need a really good soldering iron and about 2 lbs of silver solder. . . . Build a tinker's dam and fill her up! . . . Grind away the excess and Voila! . . . . You are in choiless heaven!

. . . Second, sharpen away until that edge is even with the choil. o_O

Other than that. . . uh . . . . No. Sorry bro.

Let's Drink!

Jerry :D
.

Look into the pendulums and

Repeat after me, "I will make no choil versions"

extrastout, I was speaking more about weight savings than balance, besides, the biggest weight savings is in that talon hole ;):D.

I got you;).....The full flat grind saves a lot of weight...The stock thins quickly from the spine to the edge. The saber grind stays thick about half way down the blade, then angles toward the edge meaning more weight...:confused:This makes sense to me, thats the most important thing :D

I'm drinking right now, Jerry. It's Tuesday's bottle. I'm saving Wednesday's bottle for tomorrow. Come on by. . .
