Hey WW, Im not trying to pick on you but I would like for you answer this for me because im curious not because Im trying to be a ass. but you say your on a quest for the best irregaurdless of the name on the blade. I respect that from you I really do, But how do you know what your getting if the manufacturer will not tell you how the heat treat is done, or presents his customers with misleading smoke and mirror "alternative" names for already existing steel. Like I said before. usually if somebody is hiding something, its not for any good reason.
Thats not necessarily so, Todd. We all hide things... our passwords, bank account numbers, our PIN's, social security numbers, etc. Hiding something keeps it protected, and prevents others from using it. Distillers hide their whiskey recipes, beer brewers hide their recipes... ad nauseum.
Fact is, while a lot of you fellers are experts in metallurgy, and dismiss Busse claims of a magical heat treat process, you do not really know. Lets face it, its conceivable that he has perfected some science that yields a better and/or more economical way to treat steel. Science makes new discoveries every day. Maybe Jerry Busse is a pioneer in metallurgy. I don't know. Its not my field of expertise. He could have a specific scientific process that could be patented under intellectual property. Maybe he has a specific process that he uses and believes produces the best results for his product, and markets it thusly, but in reality is no better than anything else? If thats the case, every manufacturer could be accused of hype.
Maybe it is all marketing hype, maybe all he does is saw up a shape, polish it, slap some handles on it and sell it as the successor to Excalibur. I don't know, nor am I defending him. Why is it wrong to be a successful business man? I don't care for some of his tactics, but, it is not my business. What's more, no one is twisting anyones arm to buy his gear. It always seems like a lot of folks get a "mad on" over them. Todd, please understand I am not attacking anyone, especially not you. I get when someone thinks its dishonest to sell something under the pretense that it is something its not, I agree. But without knowing for sure, isn't that like finding him guilty without a trial?
If the guy is successful at his business, good for him. Its the American way. If he lies, shame on him. Who among us, has walked a mile in his shoes and can say what goes on behind Busse and kin shop doors? Trademarking a hole?.. I have my doubts as to the legitimacy of that. Certainly could litigate over it, hell anyone can sue anyone for anything. Intel sued AMD when AMD called their CPU a 486 as a copyright infringement. They lost. Court ruled you cannot copyright a number, hence the reason the Pentium name was born. Copyright a hole?... I wouldn't think so. Trademark it? If you got the money ..
But I digress.
The point I guess... hiding something doesn't make one dishonest.
