Doug Ritter Grip

Doug - I think you will find that the majority of bladeforum members would opt for a black handle. But if, as I believe, your intent is to use a handle color that will stand out so the knife can be easily found if dropped, do not discount blue. An easy test would be to take two identical objects, one bright yellow and the other bright blue, and test visibility in a variety of conditions - in grass, weeds, gravel, leaf litter, etc., and under different lighting conditions. If you see like I do, you will find that the bright blue is at least as visible as the bright yellow in a natural environment. There is nothing remotely close to blue in most natural environments, and it really stands out. I first discovered this on a backpacking trip in thick forest in the Adirondacks; we were all wearing different color ponchos in the rain, and the blue stood out the most.

I would second the blue. My first choice would be black, but if it needs to be colored then I would prefer blue. It would stand out in a natural environment (there are no blue leaves in the fall, unlike yellow). And it would be a better color for EDC than yellow, at least for me.

Doug - Blue would be my choice for the mini-RSK and I'd get one in a snap. I have the RSK Mk1 and it has been my EDC for the last two weeks and I am very happy with it. Thanks.

Good luck, Richie S.

Count me in for a couple of minis as well. I've had the RSK MK1 for a week now and it's surpassed my expectations. Great knife!
I would probably plump for black handles if pushed with blue a close second, though if it had to be yellow, that wouldn't stop me getting one.
All the best :)

Thanks to everyone for your feedback--and your compliments. The comments regarding blue vs. yellow regarding high visibility in the wild are appreciated and well taken. By the same token, a single tone of bright yellow is also pretty easy to see even among fall leaves. Much more difficult if looking for a small yellow thing in a bigger area. Of the brightly colored Mini-Grips, yellow is the leading color by a significant margin and blue is at the bottom of the list. All the colors combined represent only a small minorty compared to black. Plenty to consider as we work towards a decison on the Mini-RSK. Thanks again.

Hey, looks like this thread is picking up speed again!
I'm glad to see that the mini-RSK is being seriously considered.
I'm down for one in BLACK!

Thanks,
MPotter

After reading this thread and going to a local shop to look at and feel the griptilian, I think that the the extra 30 for the Ritter Grip is well worth worth it, gonna try and order one late next week. This will be my first folder and EDC, but I have been researching them for a while and borrowing friends folders just to get used to them. I figure might as well start of with a bang.

I'm with the others - I like the sound of a mini RSK, too. As for handle color, I can see benefits to various colors. A black handle will be low-profile as an EDC, as well as being commonly accepted. A yellow handle would be nice and bright. However, when I am out in the field, I generally opt for larger knives, anyways. An OD green handle would be a subdued alternative to black. Blue is just a plain-cool color; however, how many people are going to buy a blue-handled model? To me, those four colors seem the most feasible, with black being the presumed most sought-after color, followed by yellow or some other non-tactical, highly visible hue.
Good luck on this venture and hopefully we'll get a Mini-Ritt soon! :D

I tied on an orange paracord lanyard to my Ritter Grip...it provides good contrast.

BTW, this knife has a synergy of attributes: light, strong, reliable/easy to use lock, great ergos, useful blade shape, well executed craftsmanship, easy carry....

Still just stropping the blade on paper and it is hair shaving sharp still.

Same here. Even with lots of wood carving, food prep, cardboard cutting etc. a few strops on some leather is all it takes to bring it back to a razor. The blade geometry is so dead on it's amazing. This is easily the best $100 class knife I've ever used.

ok, so when I ordered the knife I should have upgraded to 3day shipping, now I just check the UPS tracking, every hour on the hour, haha. Quick question to those that have bought them. Do they come in a benchmade box or a special riiter box, or a box at all? Also does it come with any literature, like the website has. Or will I just find a knife a the bottom of packing peanuts.
-Thanks

I had a dreadful 2 month wait for mine, it was agonizing! But worth it. You will be impressed. ;)

I ordered mine last Thursday evening, and paid a few extra bucks for the 3-day Select Shipping. I received a tracking number on Friday, and got the knife this morning.

It was well packed in a box a little larger than the USPS video box (if you're familiar with that size.) The knife was inside a nice satin pouch in a Benchmade box. the box was wrapped in bubble wrap, with additional bubble wrap filling the remaining empty space.

The only literature (other than the invoice) was a small catalog for Aeromedix.com - a few personal safety items that were geared toward private pilots.

thanks guys, can't wait till friday.
This is were UPS says it is.
My Guess its somewhere around Pennsylvania now.

Man I have nothing better to do with my time.

I got my BM 552 RitterGrip yesterday. :D I bought it from a fellow over at candlepowerforums, and got a great price that included the Bianchi sheath. So far I can say that I love the blade shape of this knife! Also, this is the sharpest factory edge I have ever seen!!! ! Even my DLC black blade Spydie Military wasn't this sharp out of the box. I think the S30V is worth the extra $$$, especially as I paid less than most have for it.

The blade action is buttery smooth with very strong lock-up. No blade play is present at all. Also, I really like the tumbled finish on the blade, it looks real good! Very nice knife, overall!

The only negative I can say is that I *may* have one with the gritty axis lock problem. :grumpy: This is the first axis I have actually owned, but I'm pretty sure it shouldn't feel like this (based on the others I've handled).

I can actually move the axis bar side-to-side in the handle (perpendicular to the scales) by about 0.030" - 0.050". Because of this play, I can also cant the axis bar slightly in the handle (so its not perpendicular when you look at it from the back of the handle). I am able to active the axis lock with just my thumb, but I have fairly large and strong hands and it doesn't slide easily. My thumb is getting sore though. When activated with two fingers, the axis bar moves freely. I didn't notice this at first, but the more and more I use (play with) the knife today, the worse it seems to be getting (that or I'm just noticing it more).
So my question to you all is this: Would you consider what I have described as one of the defective locks? Should this be sent back to BM for service?

Thanks! Kudos to Mr. Ritter for a great knife he made available to us all!!! :D
