Down time knife WIP

Hey Goober!

I just love watching a master at work, or at least freeze frames of the results of his work. You said you've left the spine thickness alone since the stock started out pretty thin. Does that mean you haven't worked in a distal taper of any sort?

I wonder if Yar will add a WIP seection on the Rich part of the collab? That would be really Goo d!

Aloha, Filbert

Phil, No I haven't worked the back per say, but there is some taper towards the point just from the beveling.

Maybe Yar will chime in. We've talked about doing a collaboration, but not on this particular knife yet. I’m hoping he’s in.

And here I though I was going to see something new and innovative from the guy considered to be one of the best blade forgers around, come on tai!

Sam, I'm not sure how to take that, but I'm not going to tolerate any negativity on this thread. It's taking up time I could be spending on other things. If you aren't happy with it, start your own virtual BBQ WIP.

If there is any more negativity, I'll drop this thread like a hot potato.

If it's just a joke, fine. I don't have a problem with that.

And I am going to step in as moderator and point out that these WIP projects are here for education. Any questions on the process, materials, etc. are welcome. Any humor, satire, critique of technique, or other off topic posting should be sent by PM or email. Lets keep these WIP's simple and to point.

Thanks Tai for doing this.
Sam, I know you were only kidding around, but with the recent bad feelings, lets avoid it here.

Questions and comments are welcome, but let's keep it in the spirit of the virtual BBQ and hammerin. :)

Please don't drop the thread Tai, I appreciate your time and I learning a bunch from your efforts.

The thing I like is seeing how you approach this. Yes, so far what you have done is simple, but, then making something wonderful doesn't have to be complex. More like how you stack up the simple things. I appreciate the time for photos and thread.

Thanks guys.

It is a lot of simple things stacked together creatively, which ends up making the overall process quite complex.

I forgot to mention, I still need to draw the tang out, which will be the next thing I need to do before the fine tuning etc.

The idea is that the whole will end up being greater than the sum of the parts.

Also, to try and kill as many birds with one stone as possible in each step, and get through the overall process as efficiently as possible within the framework of the concept etc...

Yar can do........ My view on a blade this thin is distal is not needed. The sheath will have to be a wide one to accept the rather wide front end. It won't make its butt look to big.......

Alright Yar! Glad you're in big buddy. :)

I really like the curved one at the bottom of this pic. Do you think you could do something similar to that?

Also, since it's going to have a somewhat rough finish, do you think I should send it before final finish and assembly, or just put it all together and do a little clean up if needed when I get it back? Either way is fine with me. Whatever you'd be most comfortable with.

Ita, Yes I would prefer getting it before you have it totally finished. The sheath will have a curve to it although it maybe going in the other direction.

Iat, can do. Thanks Yar.

Is it O.K. if we have Stacy put your name in the sticky? You're going to post some WIP pix too right?

Now we'll both have a good way to kill some time. :)

That will be fine. Here's a couple I'm still working on. Note the fine leather working tools made from 16 penny nails.

Those are awesome Yar!

Whatever you decide on the curvature or not, but I really like the way the tips bend up just a little and form sort of and overall "S" curve with the downward curvatures of the handles.

I love the faces! :)

Tai, thanks for taking the time to do this. That goes for all the rest of you guys doing the WIP's.
