DPx H•E•S•T/F...ANNOUNCING THE HEST FOLDER!

Yes, there is a bottle opener. It's a HEST!

Maxx - the bottle opener on the blade is also a pot lifter, lashing point, etc... not "just" a bottle opener. (there were several threads about this feature on the fixed blade version of the HEST)

Does this bottler opener also open the knife as it exits the pocket?

On another note, I fell in love with and bought an Izula very recently. I was really digging the Izula Folder and REALLY liking the HEST folder. Well done, guys!

I like what I see of the HEST design... except for one glaring item:

That notch they cut into the blade cuts through a big fraction of the "thick" part of the blade spine, and perhaps worse than a round Spyderhole or oval hole, that sharp discontinuity (v notch) will create a very weak spot in that blade, a stress riser in the steel. That's a design killer. They may well rethink that design when the broken blade returns begin...

I'm not sure a "hard use" knife should be a multitool. After all, that's what they make Leatherman and SOG multitools for... and they can be had with fairly light weight (5oz for some).

I think most mechanical or metallurgical engineers, good machinists, or tool & die makers would agree... introducing a stress riser into the steel and thusly a weak spot, and then encouraging people to put a load on that spot by using the "Thumb grip/bottle opener/ pot lifter blade notch" as designed, but far worse and fairly likely as a wrench or otherwise, or worse still, as a "hard use folder" for batoning or light prying might result in failure. Any strong lateral / bending load on that blade will result in a case study... I predict it'll break starting at the lowest point of the V notch on top of spine and break right through to the little choil at base of cutting edge (the other much less significant stress riser).

That's a bit of a "wet blanket" post, but I don't think it's way out in left field or paranoid, either. Hope they don't receive a bunch of broken blades back looking for replacements.

Your opinion might vary :D

That thing is Awesome looking !!

Awesome!
One question about the non-g-10 side, will there be a texture to it?
Checkering/striations/indentations something that makes it grippy? It looks really smooth in the picture. To me smooth is slippery.
:)

That's the main reason I don't by full stainless steel or metal handles knives. Considering most knives like this are made very similarly like Strider, etc, with G10 or similar scale on the opposite side I'd think the grip from that side is adequate. I don't know for sure because I don't own any blades with handles like this. This will be my first.

As for the previous poster's concern about the stress point where the bottle opener is, The fixed blade HEST has been out for about a year or so(?) and I haven't read or heard about similar damage or breakage issues with that model. Granted they're different steels but I'd like to think that these guys know what they're doing, especially considering their warranty.

I don't believe that they will texture the ti side but I fully expect the grip to be just fine. The g10 will add it where it's needed.

I have a few knives that have full metal handles. A Benchmade with heavily sculpted aluminum handles. It will actually shred your pants pocket so no grip issues there. My unmuzaan which while being completely ti handled has some checkering and feels very secure and then a cgg large regular sebenza. It feels fine as is but I had a g10 scale made for it on the non lock side (similar set up to the HEST/f) and it feels great. The only knife I have that has an all metal handle that could be slippery is my polished ss Spydie lava.

After using all of those knives I'm convinced that the shape/ergonomics of the handle of a knife is more important than the actual scale material. Even the smooth scales on my sebenza and lava are fine when held in a proper grip while wet with water or blood on them.

With all of that said I think the grip on the HEST/f will be great.

Well i have a metal gripped folder, my Kershaw Cyclone.
While i love the knife the metal side panels are smooth with minimal texture which does not always result in a solid grip. And i find that for a while after you have washed your hands the knife seems even slicker.
I think the natural oils in the skin of your hands make it seem grippier, and when you wash you lose those oils for a while and the knife feels less grippy.
Actually the knife also seems almost easier to get a grip on when it is wet (i realized that today when i was cleaning it).
My Kershaw Groove is also metal handled (its a frame lock) however it has minimal g-10 scales that are held on to the frame with screws. That G-10 makes a world of difference in the grippiness of the knife.
The Zero Tolerance 0300 has a one side metal one side synthetic setup, however both sides are textured aggressively. The texture on the 0300 is the same as on my ZT 0200, very grippy and secure.
For me I really really think leaving one side smooth is not a great idea.
And i mostly carry and used lefty so the smooth side of the HEST will be the thumb side for a lefty.
Other than the issue of the smooth side this design looks near perfect to me, the only thing i would add is some g-10 and ideally a flipper function. But if i had too i could live without the flipper. Really a bit of texture on both sides and she is ready to go!
:)

They come in a left hand version, that would solve it for you.
Still would prefer texture on both sides.
And actually i'm ambidextrous!
:D
But mostly i use folders left handed, except for real detail carving then i mostly use my right hand. I can do most anything with either hand but i have preferences.
Yeah i know i'm weird! lol.
I shoot pistols like that too, revolvers left hand, semiautos mostly right hand, shotguns/rifles right or left handed.
Anyway back on topic,lol.

hey guys, so is it just me, or does the blade look bead blasted?

bead blast + d2 may not work well together

maybe it is just gray coating..

1. No, not to me

2. I'm sure they have figure something that will work

3. Probably so

:)
