yeah i just realized that after i posted it

damn good drawing

if this was a 4 inch blade, it would be the most perfect folder ever made

hey guys, so is it just me, or does the blade look bead blasted?

bead blast + d2 may not work well together

maybe it is just gray coating..

Actually, a bead blasted D2 blade COULD hold up to general corrosion just fine as the little bead blast pits in the blade will hold oil or wax or other protectants just fine (e.g. Sentry Tough Cloth, others).

Having said that, D2 is close to stainless, but isn't quite... and with a bit of daily care, can hold up well. But for a hard use knife, D2 isn't really any tougher really than other stainlesses with higher chrome content, so it's not a survival knife steel choice I'd make. I'd take 154CM or S30V in this application. There are other newer steels that would work even better, like Elmax, and more so, Duratech 20CV (which is purportedly tougher than S30V).

I really wanted to like this knife. But I just can't.

Based on choice of steel (D2), and the fundamentally stress-riser inducing notch in the blade's spine, I think this knife needs some design and materials choice improvements before it'll garner my dollars, which is sayin' a lot.

The big notch in the blade spine is a deal breaker on an otherwise nearly perfect knife, for me, as well.

For that matter, the choil and thumb ramp serrations are far too large and deep, as well.

I read through everything i could about H.E.ST Folder and many quibbles over the D2 selection and the notches.

Having seen great performances by H.E.S.T fixed blade on fields , we embrace the upcoming H.E.S.T folder ( Blade material changed from 1095 steel to D2, same design pieced together with many rings and bells) with plenty of hopes and joy like a 1st born.

I'm very excited as I've reserved a Mr DP # 162 and crossed my fingers as there's no confirmation about it. I clicked on the link sent to activate the #.

Before i go ahead and get flamed by everyone, i would like to share one thought:

There must be reasons why the notches stayed as that on fixed blade and D2 is the main player- I believed none of us have tested a blade at such hostile and dangerous war zone as much as RYP and other mercenaries.

I might also missed out many threads about their war-reviews but all these are feedbacks from RYP's past experiences and convey that into what he thinks of capable to deliver a tougher than nails folder in the Taliban infested zone.

Now, if you don't mind, do enlighten me if i have mistaken any points.

If i do able to secure one myself, it would be a user.:)

If the notches are a design flaw, why no flub about the fixed blade version? And with the folder the blade is even thicker than the fixed. Is D2 more prone to lateral breakage than 1095? I can see where that would be the weakest point but with a 3/16 thick blade, that would seem to be pretty strong to me.

I guess time will tell, but I don't see the 'notch' in the blade as being a major problem. It has radiused corners and I don't see it as being the "weakest link".

Just my .02........ :)

The blade is the same as the fixed blade HEST right,,,with the notch?

I havn't seen any fixed blade HEST breaking,,,has anyone else?

RYP has said no fixed blade HEST's have been sent in due to failure.

I thought I recalled hearing about a few prybar breakages?

No blades though...

I dont remember where I read that though, so maybe my mind is playing tricks on me.

At any rate, I cannot wait to see the first real pics of the folder, with any luck coming soon.

I am not aware of any fixed blade DPx H•E•S•T problems. Jeff and Mike can list if any have been replaced under warranty. It's a pretty chunky piece of steel and you would have to work overtime and with a large sledgehammer to bring it some hurt.:))

I think the initial concerns about my design of the folder almost mirror the initial concerns about the DPx H•E•S•T. When you do something new, people react. When they actually feel or use the product, as in the case of the HEST they realize that there is a "feel" and personality. When they get their hands on it they see the thinking that went into the design reveals itself as it slowly becomes a part of their world. Such is the world of highly personal, real world, real use, knife design. There are plenty of knives created on a whim or to appeal to a trend. These aren' them.

I don't know that anyone has every designed a knife that is perfect for everyone. And it's clear that these knives are very personal and developed for a very small group of people who operate in hostile environments. There will be small group of enthusiasts in the DPx family and I look forward to your comments and opinions as we develop more products.

Perfect to me...everything I've been looking for in a folder!
