Eating Apples with pocket knives?

I eat my apples without cutting because:
1. Knife gets really gunky and sticky if I cut it with knife.
2. Gums get little bit of work.

My Grandfather used his knife for everything. Skinning a squirrel, cleaning out gunk on a lawnmower, cutting gum out of carpet, slicing a sandwich in half and even cutting up an apple. I can promise you he never cleaned it. The best it ever got was a wipe down on his pant leg. Because of him I am pretty much the same way! I eat an apple almost everyday and always use the knife in my pocket.

pretty much this - i will actually give mine some warm soapy water from time time, but usually don't worry about ti too much

I think cutting up an apple is the funnest thing you can do with a pocket knife!

I used to be mildly concerned about how much oil I was consuming , but then I learned here on BF to use food-grade mineral oil to lube the joints. :p

I eat apple seeds weekly (for like forty years now) and apples most every day that The Chef cuts up for me (she's a party pooper and leaves out the seeds).
What symptoms should I look for ?
I do have an addiction to watching old '50s Sci Fi B movies and can't get enough of them. Do you suppose this is a manifestation of my apple seed "problem" ?
. . . other than that . . . I was going to say I'm pretty normal . . . but you guys aren't going to buy that are you ?

Apple seeds are not too bad if you just eat them...they tend to pass through.

Back in the late 80's I was making juice through with a grinder/extractor...just kept getting sicker till my doctor clued me in. The symptoms stopped almost immediately after stopping the juice.

Used to carry milk bones in my pocket for the dogs I would encounter working in people’s homes.... You ever eat a Granny Smith / slim Jim combo?

Now I have a custom I made out of 1095 in the lunch box strictly for any food.

You can eat an apple without slicing it up.......................
I don't think so

Don't sweat it. There is a HUGE difference between organic and inorganic cyanide. Sodium cyanide, or cyandide salt, will kill you dead. Organic cyanide would require ingesting massive quantities to do any appreciable harm. Cyanide is a little like steel, there are a lot of different kinds of it and they can be very, very different.

I use my carry knives to cut my dinner all the time.

I use them to cut anything from cheese and salami to pork chops and rotisserie chicken, knives as small as my peanut all the way up to fixed blades like my 119.
I have no need for steak knives when I've already got a razor sharp knife on me, they're just one more thing that needs to be kept sharp or clean so I don't have them.
Not to mention that most steak knives found in restaurants are about as dull as a 15 hour lecture on the history of dirt.

Eating an apple using a knife is civilised. :D

I used to watch my grandfather pick an orange right from the tree and peel it so the entire peel was one long peel. I do the same now, but I don't live in Florida anymore, so no orange picking.

But our miniature lime plant that lives inside is a good enough!

I have in the past but I’m back to just eating it. When I cut the apple up I eat more of the “meat” and it’s the worst part to eat. It’s all sugar water. What I do now is eat the skin and give the bugs and bacteria the sugar.

Interesting thread, great pics guys. As a kid many winters ago the elder gentlemen would use a small folder in restaurants to cut up the after dinner apple even in a restaurant. It was the polite thing to chew the smaller pieces. I guess it was from European custom. I save the large blade on my sak for food and sometimes do the same. More out of reminiscences and respect for the old custom than real need.

I use an apple slicer, because I eat apples (sometimes 2 or 3) everyday. I dislike eating apples as they were meant to be, so I would use a pocket knife to cut an apple, but that occasion rarely arises.

The other night, my GF ate an apple ‘normally.’ I looked at her like she does at me, when I’m being a “gross boy.” I was surprised at my reaction to her eating an apple. I absolutely laughed at myself and my new perception of eating an apple.

I’ve already ate an apple today and will have another tonight as a snack. Jazz and Kanzi apples are my favorites.

I almost always have an SAK along with my main folder. The SAK gets carted around mostly for the tools, so the blade isn't ever covered in tape residue, dirt, etc. It gets food duty.

The Endura is great for sandwiches though.

My technique is wrong or something because I usually draw blood when I slice an apple in hand.
Maybe my obsession with sharpening to the steels ultimate potential is the issue?
Nope, it's just your technique. :p

I did cut my finger while wiping lime juice off of my k390 urban the other day though... o_O

Definitely the technique of holding the apple using my thumb as a stop.
I had the same issue stripping wire last week.
No big deal, I've got cutting boards for apples and wire strippers that I was just too lazy to fetch out of the garage.
There's always a better way but having a knife that won't slice my thumb on contact isn't one of those ways.
