Edc weight really that big of an issue?

Not an issue here, though that's only when I'm wearing blue jeans.

When I'm wearing my uniform I carry in my waistband just to the right of my button so size and weight can be a factor there.

Basketball shorts or sweatpants usually doesn't matter as long as I'm not running and if they have pockets.

For one of my really good friends he can be very picky about weight and things like that. He thinks 5 oz is too much.

Personally for me weight is a non issue. It's all about how a knife carries. Sometimes weight is the reason it is uncomfortable to carry. But my most comfortable carry knife is also the heaviest, my K2 folder.

Well I am kinda backwards for my edc. I have an opinel #8 for my knife (1.51 oz ) but I also carry a full size ruger sr9. Weight has never really crossed my mind.

Weight matters, summer clothes limited # of pockets that share space with other stuff, prefer light weight BM 710 & BM Stryker. Winter more pockets and bigger size means can easily carry heavier folders ZT0200 & ZT0600, SOG's Fatcat & Tomcat. IMHO heavier folder is better cutting choice mass+velocity=deeper cut against heavy winter clothing.

For me, it's a factor I consider. It's mostly about the proportional ratios. I appreciate when a manufacturer does the work needed to really min/max the numbers, as in blade size vs handle length vs weight. Things like milled out liners and light weight materials. I like that design philosophy in most things, not just knives.

In general if pocket carry then very light weight and very thin/slim.
Anything more then its in a belt pouch.

Don't own any chunky heavy folders, and can't see ever buying one either. Even a Leatherman Charge TTi is a small brick in my opinion; belt carried and I do like. More knife and I'll take a fixed one.

I can't carry my ZT301 as it pulls my pants down too much. I carry my zt562 or zt452 or benchmade 810 easy enough and none of them are exactly tiny knives.

well i say as long as it dont weigh your pants down like some of the mall ninjas i seen around here. not saying any names. then i guess your fine. have a good one

I always carry a gun, so the weight of my knife isn't an issue. I just don't like long folders clipped to my front pocket that I have to adjust when I squat or sit.

My old EDC...

I love knives, but the problem is that I love them more than I need them. I don't live or work in an environment where I use them a lot. Most of the time, I'm wearing dress pants, slacks, or golf pants. Heavier knives are not too gentle on them, so I usually carry my smaller/lighter ones like the Dragonfly 2, the Delica, or my Hizen.

I do have some heavier/bulkier knives (ZT 0550 and 0456, and a Spyderco Native 5 CF), but I only carry them when I'm wearing jeans or hiking pants.

So, while the weight of a knife may not keep me from buying it, it may keep me from carrying it often.

All depends on the environment , clothing , legal/ social restrictions , other gear load , task at hand and matters of preference .

Lucky for me , being retired and mostly staying on my own land - I get to wear stylish surplus nyco cargo pants ( mostly chocolate chip) and usually carry a 5.5" CS Espada in the right front and a 5.5" Talwar in the left . Actually carried the big Rajah for a few months , but couldn't get comfy !

When I go somewheres fancy , like the WallyWorld , I usually gear down out of respect for ol' Sam . And go with bare minimum when swimming at the lake . Weight DOES matter when you can't touch bottom !

I'm one of those that takes weight into account when making an EDC purchase. Since 80 percent of my waking hours are in slacks, I much prefer small, light, and thin (primarily scale to scale width, belly to back to a lesser degree). SAK Classic, Case Blackhorn, Gerber Micro LST, Spyderco Manbug, CRKT mini whatever that wharncliffe folder is called. Jettison? I just ordered a SRM 6040 because I'd read the heat treat is good, the lines appear pleasing, and the knife is one ounce. I work an office job, spending most my time on the phone as a supply chain guy. I don't cut a lot of stuff, so I get by with small knives. Same goes with the rest of my gear, all of which comfortably fits in pants pockets. Granted, my phone and keys go in my desk, replaced by a small notepad and a pen, but still. The rest of the time, I'm in cargo shorts, gym shorts, or jeans, where I carry something a little larger, but rarely over 3-1/4" in length, or more than three or four ounces.

Hi!

I believe you'll love this little guy, it's one of the best bang for your buck folders in the entire market nowadays, IMO. SRM 6040...I really like it as a small EDC

Also the reason I decided to try it out, it weighs 30 grams (1.1 oz.). That's 1/12th of the weight of the folder in the right.

I carry it much more than my Dragonfly, TBH. Not as much cutting power, but that's what large folders are anyway...

Tell us how you like it when you get it!

It's another of those right tool for the right job issues. I physically could carry a 9oz knife but it would serve no additional benefit in my use. Honestly, I've yet to come across a job that a Chaparral couldn't do that I thought a different folding knife would. Not that those jobs don't exist, just that they don't exist in my daily routine. Having access to a small tool kit at work and in the car followed by the full assortment of tools at home has reduced the task of the pocket knife to cutting simple things. For me, that big heavy honker of a knife doesn't do that better.

I think there are some cool designs out there that are asthetically pleasing in larger folders. I don't think I'll be buying any soon as I've yet to have the need arise.

Size, width and shape can be an issue, depending on the clothes I'm wearing.
Weight is not, and has never been. Quite the contrary actually*:*the heavier, the better for me.

Even when wearing jeans, I don't care for a heavy knife that pulls down on my pants. Even worse when wearing board shorts. But, I am more tolerant of weight than the bulk of a knife. I wear it on the inside of my right front pocket along wit my wallet. The bulk of the wallet hides the knife. If someone wants my wallet, they are in for a pointed rejection of their request. Biggest knife I carry now are the Southard AVO, LionSteel TiSpine and ZT452CF.

With a pocket clip, no IMHO. But try carrying a buck 110 in your pocket. You will notice it all day. I work in the Arizona Heat. I wear a long sleeve t shirt, and rip stop cargo pants. As someone who works in more extreme heat than 99.99% of the people who on this board who say they work in hot weather, on and off roofs where temperatures get to around 130 degrees, as well as attic crawl spaces that can cross 140 degrees, I can tell you that

1) anyone who can survive their workday either shirtless, or in short sleeves, as well as wear shorts, does not work in weather I would consider to be hot.
Hn
2) with a pocket clip, weight becomes a non factor.

And this is from a guy who wears an additional 20 lbs on a tool belt, while carrying a stainless steel .357 revolver inside his waistband, or a .38 on his ankle.

Width and weight matter to me. Normally a 3" blade or shorter in front and a 3 1/2 " or longer in the back. Today it's a Mnandi in front and a Zaan in the back. If I think I will need a longer blade in back, it would probably be a 0452 CF.
