ER MPC!!!
BM 710 (with some mysterious rattle)
LM Wave (old version)
SF 6p (no anti roll bezel)
;)

I think that ideally one should have the same EDC gear pretty much all of the time, but I certainly see the utility in changing out certain items based on expected situations.

For example: for short walks in the woods, I have swapped out my Benchmade AFCK and SAK Tinker for a BRK&T Highland Special and a SAK Trailmaster.

Perhaps it is better to make one's list more general, ie: "Locking Folder", rather than "Benchmade 806D2 AFCK Tactical Folder with a compass in the buttstock and this thing which tells time" In reality it doesnt' matter, but psychologically it encourages more flexibility, rather than rigidly sticking to one's specific gear. One might be encouraged to make better choices for specific tasks, rather than trying to do everything with one 'general' knife (or other piece of gear).

That being said, I, like most of us, I think, try to get as much utility out of each piece of gear I carry as I can. I love something that can perform a particualar task well, but if that same something can do several tasks well, that's even better!

My EDC gear is based on an Urban environment and the problems I am likely to encounter there, while still acknowledging the fact that I may unexpectedly find myself in an Outdoor type environment as well. However, I live in Philly and an 'real' Outdoor environment is pretty hard to come by.

PS - This 'Philosophy of EDC' stuff is fun...

Is it just me?.......

I used to view every intended purchase folder as a potential EDC - ie: something I'd like to carry "everyDay".......

But the fact that I ended up carrying basically the same knife (model) for over 15 years - shows that I have settled on the right combination (for me) .....

or of course I am easily satisfied ....
or just lack imagination :D

I think that 'the test' is:

If you carry the same knife every day and you don't find yourself saying "Darn, I wish I had knife 'X' with me instead of this one!", then you have found a good EDC knife.

The same would go for other EDC gear, too.

Good "test" - but I find eventually an EDC item/knife just becomes part of "what one wears" - they don't require (much) conscious thought.......

Yes, of course I still look at knives with the thought of carrying them - but it doesn't occur to me, these days, to replace my EDC knife.

The more I carry my EDC knife (and it's over 15 years now on the same model) - the more experience based it is, and the more it confirms my choice.....

of course one can also call that stubborn and intransigent :D

Well, that's the other side of the coin; You might have found the PERFECT knife for you, OR you might be really missing out on another which would be much better and you just don't realize it.

For Example: It might never even occur to a person who always just rips loose threads off of their shirts that they'd be much better off with a knife or scissors. Not because they're stupid, but just because what they're doing seems to work well enough for them.

You might just be 'making do' with your EDC blissfully unaware that something better is out there.

Having said all that, I think that in your case, the trial and error you've gone through while still arriving back at your trusty Victorinox Scientist (if I'm not mistaken) would show that you've got a darn good EDC for your needs.

and on my pocket I typically have a Spydie Merlin - ATS-55 serrated. Funny how people react to this - an ex-cop now HR guy here calls the Merlin a weapon...

Scissors is a great example, thank you.

My normal out of the house EDC knife is the Victorinox Scientist - probably because it has everything I "normally" need out of the house -
but I am still within "easy access" to home........

That last phrase is key -
to use the loose thread on the sleeve or shoulder example -
I do know it is very awkward to cut with just a knife - since I don't have my other hand to hold the thread -
so I either leave it until I get home and use a pair of scissors there, or take off the shirt and use two hands - one to pull/hold the thread the other to cut with the knife.

However - while a long ways away from home like traveling long distances - eg: what I termed Air Travel - I initially changed my EDC - primarily not to have any chance of losing my "customized" Scientist - to the Victorinox Yeoman - ie: the Scientist with scissors added - because the Yeoman at the time was less "rare" - and I could almost "afford to lose it".

But despite the fact it's less of an easy pocket carry being 3 layers/backsprings wide - I grew to appreciate the fact it had scissors - since being a long way away from home may mean that I may not have access to a pair of scissors.

That's why my regular out of the house EDC is the Scientist without scissors - and my Air travel EDC is the Yeoman with scissors.........

and that's also why my at home EDC is a Kershaw Ken Onion Leek - just a knife - for its easy opening, pocket clip - making it more convenient than actually reaching for any other knives in the home - and I DON'T need the screwdrivers, corkscrew, can-opener, bottle-cap lifter, pen, toothpick, tweezers etc. actually on my person since these things are all within easy access at home...........

Old WESTERN mini-jack in my left front pocket.
Old CAMILLUS electrician knife in a sheath on my belt.
Older traditionals with half-stops, what more could I ask for? :)

New EDC with some changes:

Filosofem, you have some nice knives.:)

I've been meaning to ask you, who made the blue framelock you had in your earlier EDC pic?

Thanks.

This knife has been the best $80.00 that I ever spent, and besides the fact that it is a little dull right now, it is just as good as the day I bought it. Along side the Benchmade is my custom Springfield Armory 1911A1 .45 ACP, a winning combo.
Where can I find Boguszski knives? I dont see them advertised anywhere.
I saw one once...beautiful.

Thanks

Home: Any bloody thing I want.

Out on the Town: El Hombre or small Kasper/Crawford professional model.

Airplane: I USED to carry-on a Blackjack Mamba. That happens no more. In my checked bag I carry a pair that I won't mind having ripped off. In case this should happen, I carry a waved Trailguide, or a Walther Allied Forces. In my pocket, a wad of cash in case I have to buy a new damned knife.

Work: Buck Strider spear point.

:)
