EDC - What's in Your Pocket(s)??

I had been thinking that the reverse-tanto blade on the BM 940 series was a bit odd, and was considering the clip-point instead. What's your opinion of the reverse-tanto blade?

how do you like the 940Ti vs the standard aluminum (if you've handled it). I want the cf model but i don't really like d2. I'd rather have s30v or vg10.

Pete

LyonHaert,

looks like you posted while i was typing. i used to have the regular 940 in green before i lost it    . i liked the reverse tanto blade, it seems like it should be stronger than the clip point but probably wouldn't penetrate soft materials as well. actually i was just talking to my dad about the differences between them because he wants one too. like i said, i really liked the reverse tanto, there was some really interesting tapering going on in the blade as viewed from above (maybe someone can post a picture) and it cut well. i also liked it because it was a little different looking. let us know which you choose if you get one and be sure to post some pictures if you can. oh yeah, i lost it because the clip came loose and it slid off my pocket, does the titanium version have a titanium clip? cuz i really like the titanium clip on my mclux, just enough give.

Pete

Joel,
I'm impartial about the blade. It's got a fairly stout tip, that penetrates and makes fine cuts better than a drop point, or standard clip point, but not as well as something like a wharncliffe. The relatively straight edge makes it slice better on longer or tougher cuts that a blade with more belly would pull out of, but it doesn't grab like a recurve.
I think the 940 is a good example of a "general purpose" blade shape, and it doesn't seem specialized for any one thing. I really like the knife, the slim, rather narrow profile, the way it carries, feels in the hand, and the way it looks.
It's very much a "in-between" knife, though, which is fine by me. That's what I want in an EDC knife, rather than carry a bunch of specialized ones--I feel kind of stupid typing that after posting a pic with the 940, 2 fixed blades, 2 SAKs, and a multitool. Might as well carry specialized blades, since I'm toting anywhere from three to five all the time, anyway, huh?
Haven't used the 941, so can't compare them. 941 probably gives up some tip strength for better penetration.

Pete,
The clip is steel, but a different design from the standard clip. There's a pic on BM's site that shows it:
http://www.benchmade.com/detail.asp?model=940TI
I've had a couple with the Al handles (those blue/satin/PE knives of the month from 2000), and prefer the Ti. Probably not a great description, but it feels "better", and more solid. Something about the balance of the knife, I guess. It just seems to have more heft. No idea if there is actually much of a weight difference, or this is just some mental thing. Sold my blue ones awhile back, so can't compare them right now. The blasted Ti gets tiny scratches on it, but doesn't getted rubbed and chipped off like the anodizing on the aluminum ones.
I handled the 940CFD2, and didn't like it. Just didn't "feel" right. After reading comments from people who apparently felt the opposite, I guess this is one of those things you just have to try out for yourself to see what's right for you...

i dunno, anyone else carry a photon around the neck and do you have any suggestions as far as quick release goes?

I wear my Photon on the chain of my LaGriffe, I went to the section of Walmart that had the revolving displays of keychains and found some split rings with really small clips (look like mini lanyard clips ). There were two rings to a pack, with about three mini-clips to a ring.

If you cant find something like that, try the craft section and look for small lanyard clips.

Gonna try to post a pic of one of my Photons, along with an Arc 'AAA' that has a similar setup. This will also give you a size reference. I have had no problems with printing and it keeps weight to a miminun.

Hope this helps, or at least gives you an idea to try.

Pete

[edit: OwenM, thanks for the info, the ti looks nice and i like the clip design, i'd love to handle both. we'll see how it goes, but i really want a cf knife. (too bad william henrys are only made for righties :( ) ]

I've seen small lanyard clips in (tough looking) plastic - perhaps they were reinforced type(?)

Would these be more comfortable - espcially if worn against the skin?

I've been thinking of wearing either the Alox or stainless steel Victorinox Classic around the neck and wanted to know about quick detach devices.

Anyone know if Alox (aluminum alloy) is OK to wear next to the skin? - thanks.

To add to the thread. Below is a pic of my EDC 'box'. That's the box that sits on top of my dresser where EDC stuff gets tossed.

site1163.JPG

Ball point pen.

Right Front Coin Pocket:
$5 in Susan B. Anthony coins

Left Rear:
Checkbook
Memo Pad

Right Rear:
Handmade leather wallet with intials stamped into it.

Hehe, I still have my S&W Swat knife (full-size). It hasn't been my EDC for a long time, but I keep it in the bag I take to work. If someone needs to borrow a knife, that's the one I hand them.

I've used it for work(HVAC) and general EDC(on occasion) for about 4 years now. That big beefy blade makes short work of any prying I might have to do(I've never been afraid I was going to break it). The drop point blade has a nice tip and the 440C can take a pretty good edge. Plus it's pretty cheap in the event I finally do break it or lose it.

You should look into a Spydero FRN Endura.

How many people would actually lend their EDC knife to someone?

How many actually have a separate knife just to lend out?

BTW - OT -
this thread is now the most read, and the most replied to in the Blade Discussion Forum.
Thanks to everyone who've participated -
please keep posting your thoughts.

Thanks.

I'm not really fond of most Spydies...as I prefer liner locks. I may check into getting a Military for my EDC rotation though...so many knives...so little time.

VT, from time to time, I've lent out EDC's to friends who were 'unarmed' so to speak. Particularly, if we're going out to a place that may not be on the greatest side of town.

Hell, the Millie is MUCH better, it's just I thought you were in the market for a more affordable to replace knife incase it got lost in the field.

Lets see... today's load: Got home from work, went to future shop, got back, got online after food. Still work carry.

left/front:
*frn se endura, 98 model
*wallet, c/ spydercard pe, 02 purchase

right/front:
*calypso jr lt pe, 01 model
*lambsfoot slipjoint
*bic black fine point

watch pocket:
*cf se 'fly

Right/hip:
*LM Crunch, se
*2aa maglite

Left/Hip:
*FB03 Lum Tanto, in normark rig

Neck:
*ss pe 'fly, in normark rig

IWB/Left:
*ss se cricket, with custom clip

keys: (hanging off belt loop on front/left)
*50lbs snap weight 'biener
*car and house keys
*LM Micra
*jester green se

So technically 11 knives on me. When I head out later the right and watch carry will be traded for a CE millie, ss cricket moves to right/iwb, and minimag is replaced by 21" asp.

I finally broke down and took a picture of whats in my pockets...

edc.jpg

-LED mini-flashlight
-Jansport wallet
-BUM watch
-Glasses ( lazik soon! )
-Keys with a p-38
-cash and change

Well, I for one, do.

There have been times when there was a large box to be broken down or a package to be opened, and instead of pulling out a regular folder, they now use desk scissors held at an awkward angle. This is both men and women. Carrying a pocketknife is now a societal no-no.

I used to offer one of my bigger blades, but since 9/11 that now attracts attention, such as someone saying in a loud conversational tone, "Wow, wouldn't take THAT to the airport, would you. That knife could get you arrested?!" Heads turn, eyes focus, and I want disappear.

I carry a tiny folder given to me as a gift and no one else is allowed to use it. It is handmade and irreplaceable.

If someone knows I carry blades and asks to use one, I give them my Victorinox Midnite MiniChamp. It looks more like a toy than anything else.

Many thanks for the thoughtful reply.

My story -
At a party given by a good friend - having some difficulty extracting a broken cork from a wine bottle - he asked if anyone had a knife.
Like a ***** I volunteered my relatively new lockback.

He cut and pried the remaining obstinate cork out, then admired the knife and handed it back.

We both "looked good"....so I thought.

Except my knife now had a nice big chip on the edge.

Since my EDC is a customized Victorinox SAK -
I don't ever lend it out.

I thought of carrying a loaner knife for the occassions when someone might "insist" on borrowing my knife.
But the additional hassle of carrying an additional knife (even a tiny one like the Classic) outweighs that remote possibility.
So if someone wants to borrow my knife - I'll offer to do the cutting -
but still will not lend out the knife.

Today in my left front pocket I have my large regular Sebenza, my aligator money clip and my mammoth ivory Mnandi. In my right front pocket I have my keys and leatherman Micra. In my left rear pocket I have my stingray wallet purchased from Adam Unlimited and in my right rear pocket I have my comb. :) ;) :p
