EDC - What's in Your Pocket(s)??

UnknownVT,

Aye, good policy. I happen to carry a loaner knife in the bag I tote to work. However, my policy is not to lend it to just anyone. There are certain folk I work with whom I know won't do something foolish with it, so they're the only ones to whom I'd loan it. Otherwise, same as you, I offer to do the cutting.

Is the loaner knife bought specifically for the purpose?

or just one that you already have/retired, and perhaps don't care too much for?

Has anyone considered a loaner knife as a sort of "ambassador" to encourage others to be interested in knives?

If so, would the choice of a loaner knife then be different?

Thanks,

Good questions.

The loaner wasn't specifically bought for that purpose. It was my former EDC before acquiring the 3" M16. It's still a solid knife, so I chose not to totally retire it just yet. It also comes in handy for the occasional prying task, so if I totally ruin it, I won't be much concerned. "Oops."

(I hate it when a knife falls, though. You see it falling toward the floor and you just think, NOT THE TIP!)

It works fairly well as a loaner, because the handle fits well in the hand, and is a decent size and weight (probably 5 oz., give or take). Thus, the handler, especially inexperienced ones, are quite aware of the knife in their hand and won't fall out. My EDC, on the other hand, is just under 2 oz. and they'd hardly feel it in their hand.

The only problem with loaners is the release method of the locking mechanism, as most people have to be taught how to close the knife. I've seen it plenty of times with liner-locks, and I think it's because they just don't see it.

If I were to choose a knife specifically for loaning usage, my first choice (off the top of my head, mind you) would be a BM 921 Switchback. It's pretty, styled to look like a butterfly's wing. It has the small blade that some folks would be more comfortable with. Last but not least, the AXIS lock is fairly visible and easy to explain. "Pull that back with your thumb. Push the blade forward with your finger."

Edit: On the other hand, I'd completely forgotten about the Benchmite.

Joel,

Many thanks for the reply.

A former EDC makes a really good loaner knife.

Since one actually bought and used it as an EDC -
so it's been time tested and used as such.

Unfortunately I've had my same EDC for over 11 years now -
and my former EDCs all have sentimental value.........

I have yet to find an EDC that will last me that long, though the S&W lasted quite a few. My next folder purchase is going to be a careful one.

I just posted this list in another thread, but I couldn't NOT post it here as well. Could I?

OK, here's my current list. I have a number of changes I'm looking to make soon, but here's what on my every time I leave the house (except to go running):

CURRENT EDC GEAR:

WALLET:
Spec Ops Brand THE Wallet
SEPTA Bus/Subway Tokens (2)
Spare Keys (Home, Both Cars)
ID
CCW Permit
Spare Cash ($21, including $1 in Quarters)
Credit Cards
ATM Card
Emergency Phone # List
AG Russell Ultimate Pen Knife
OneStopKnifeShop Titanium Credit Card Knife
Small Plastic Bags (2)

KEYCHAIN:
Carabiner
Mini Fox 40 Whistle
Photon II Micro light (White)
Leatherman Squirt P4 (in custom concealex keychain sheath)
Keys (Home, Both Cars)

PANTS POCKETS:
Nokia 8265 Cell Phone
Seecamp LWS-32
Spare Magazine (1)
Pocket Concealment Systems Redoubt Pocket Holster
Benchmade 806D2 AFCK (Modified with ‘Wave’)
Victorinox Tinker (Red)
Victorinox SwissTool X
Bandana
Fisher Space Pen

I'm in the process of changing the Following:

- Adding a Laminated Emergency Card (contact #’s, no allergies, blood type, in obvious place in wallet)

- Making a Kydex or Cordura Pocket Organizer for: Tinker, Space Pen, Cell Phone and Spare Magazine

- Replacing the Spec Ops Brand THE Wallet with something else. It's very nice, it just doesn't work that well for me.

- Laminating my Emergency Phone # List

- Adding another light of some kind (maybe).

- Switching My Seecamp Pistol for a new Kahr PM9 (w/DLC coating) in Pocket Holster

- Adding a Benchmade 556 Mini-Griptilian in D2 (Modified with a 'Wave')

- Switching my Benchmade 806D2 AFCK (Modified with a 'Wave') for a Benchmade 805 TSEK Axis (I beleive the 'Wave' will work better on that model...we'll see...)

- Add a Sharpener of some kind. I have several, but I'm unsure which to EDC, probably just a small sheet of 320 Grit Wet/Dry Sandpaper in my wallet.

- Thinking about making a Custom Pouch for my SwissTool that will also hold a Pocket Wrench II.

- Thinking about getting a better, or maybe a smaller Carabiner.

- Thinking about adding a Larger Silk Bandana

- Adding a Tiny First Aid Kit

I have obviously bought several knives over the years -
always with some "justifiable" :o purpose in mind - lots of them were considered as EDCs - lots of tactical-like stuff - almost all one handers - but although I "flirted" with carrying them - I still carried the SAK - so they never surplanted my EDC SAK.

It's not that I am attached to my EDC - I think over the years usage and experience found that knife seems to suit my EDC purposes - so I've grown attached to it - and so it's "attached" to me :)

My current edc:-Timberline mini Pit Bull
-CRKT Point Guard
-keychain:Victorinox "Stayglow"

My EDC has changed -
but only slightly :) -

The changes are -
digital camera: to a 3Mp Canon PowerShot A70 (from my old Canon S100 Digital ELPH)
at Home flashlight: to a CMG Ultra-G (from the regular CMG Ultra, which I gave away)

comparison - CMG Ultra-G vs. Ultra

Also the Victorinox logo shield has fallen off of the keyring belt clip....:(

now that the season is changing and the weather is getting cooler....

does that means changing EDCs to anyone?

Especially since we now wear more clothes -
and have more pockets? :D

Bigger coats and jackets mean -- you got it --more and bigger pockets. Grin.

Honestly, no, I don't think so, but I'll have to wait and see as the weather gets colder if I'll change my mind about some new things.

I think the only major change will be that with the heavier winter-wear I'll carry my Kimber .45 more often than I can in warmer weather.

With a suit and tie I always carry my Benchmade 705 in 154 CM. When wearing jeans, my Cuda Dominator is a constant companion, along with my Steyr M40.

The reason I asked this question was because I tried to "rationalize" (ha-ha! first sign of an insane mind :D) my EDCs so that they would fit any clothes I am wearing - so that despite the change in seasons to either less or more clothes the EDCs basically stay the same.

However I did wonder if more clothing and more and bigger pockets would make some carry more or bigger EDC items?

Or may be where the weather change is enough that an EDC specifically geared to the season is carried - eg: a keyhole ice-melter?

Thoughts?

Vincent,

Well put. That's exactly what I try to do. Make sure that the items I consider EDC are ACTUALLY EDC'd. If I have to wear a suit and tie I might not have some of the items I normally carry in my Cargo pants and when I travel I can't always have my pistol on me, but I there's a reason it's called EDC Gear...

but I there's a reason it's called EDC Gear...

I guess there are two (or more?) ways of looking at EDCs.

(1) Unless an item is carried everyday it's not really an EDC.

(2) BUT if say one has 365 knives and carries a different one every single day - although no single knife is an EDC -
surely one can say that one does EDC "a knife"?

Thoughts?

I'm not sure.

I, like most of us, have my array of 'EDC' Gear.

However, I CAN'T honestly say that every piece of what I consider my EDC Gear gets carried EVERY SINGLE DAY, no matter what!!!

-When I go to the Post Office, I leave my pistol in the car.

-If I have to get very dressed up for some occasion, I have to whittle down some of my gear (and get my wife to stick some of it in her purse).

-When I visit my folks in NY, or my in-laws in NJ, I have to leave the pistol at home.

-If I visit a 'Historic' site or some kind of big 'Attraction' I usually leave anything that might be considered a 'weapon' at home. This obviously includes my pistol and knife, but also my SAK, my SwissTool, my Leatherman Squirt, etc... You just can't second guess what some Security guard is gonna' consider a weapon.

So, I guess I'd have to say that what I have is really more like PMEDCEICC (Pretty Much Every Day Carry Except In Certain Circumstances) Gear.

Most days I am toting a Al Mar SERE 2000, Spyderco Mouse, Springfield Compact .45, Fisher space pen, and Copenhagen. When I am working, I generally keep the .45 close by in the truck and add my worn out Leatherman Supertool. When hunting, I ditch the Al Mar for a Spyderco Wenger and the Springfield for an Accusport Ruger Bisley in .45 Colt. Then again, sometimes I lose the Copenhagen for a handful of Arturo Fuentes cigars. At the moment, I am sitting in boxer shorts having a big, beatiful glass of Wild Turkey on the rocks and not carrying anything. Oh Hell, I forgot my Surefire E2O which I always carry, even on boxer shorts and whiskey night.

:) I'm pretty sure most of us are the same - not many are that pedantic to insist on every single day (every single minute? :p) carry before calling something an EDC -
so perhaps your more accurate PMEDCEICC (I can't even remember that! ;) ) is not really necessary.....

I used to think unless an item is carried (nearly) everyday it's not really an EDC -
but I can see the validity of carrying different knives either to suit different circumstances - or just because we want something different, on a daily basis to say that "a knife" is EDC'd.

That's why I asked if people's EDCs change with the change of season -

(1) because of more clothes and more pockets to allow carrying more or bigger items.

(2) colder and icey conditions may entail carrying different items.
