Some of my friends were sitting around talking and this question came up. Who carries an EDC for a weapon first work knife second?

I think most people here, myself included, carries a knife primarily for utility purposes. I carry pepper spray and a gun for "non-utility purposes"

I carry it as a weapon first, tool second.

yeah, i'd rather use pepper spray than a knife. but a knife is always clipped and ready

Looking for people who have had to use a knife for SD is how I got to Bladeforums in the first place.

From what I've read from military, security, and LE, as well as regular guys,

1) Knives are very seldom carried for utility and weapon use.

2) They are even less often carried solely as weapons.

3) Even a knife which is pulled is almost never used.

4) When a knife is used, the results are brutal, even if both parties live.

Most "knife fights" are the result of alcohol augmenting poor judgment. One or more people go to jail, one or more people go to the cemetary.

I used to have this illusion of "knife as emergency SD tool". Then I went looking for people who have really been there. Now whatever I have in my pocket is there to cut things. Never people.

Work first and last. I hope I would never need my EDC blade as a weapon. Would be absolutely last resort. Without training i'd end up getting myself hurt or killed.

I hope I never have to get into a knife fight to save my life or my loved one's lives. Seldom does either party come out unscathed in a knife fight from what the experts say.

My knife is a tool 100% and I would never use it as a weapon unless my CCW became unfirable for some bad reason :D I carry a firearm for protection and a knife to cut stuff besides human beings . . .

I don't entirely eliminate the potential need for a knife as an SD weapon since I can't yet carry a firearm (19, two more years), but it would be an absolute LAST RESORT and ONLY if my life was in absolute danger and another weapon was involved. If running away, calling for help, or defusing the situation are even stretched potential solutions I will use any and all of those before the knife. Unless all of those stringent criteria are somehow met (Which I hope they never will be and doubt they ever will be but better to plan ahead) I will never use a knife as a weapon. Tool first for me.

Yup. It's there if I would really need it to save my life (which is so unlikely that it can pretty much be ruled out entirely), but I would sooner run from a situation and not have to deal with the repercussions of hurting/killing someone, even if it was in pure self-defense.

Same here. I can't own firearms and lugging OC spray everywhere isn't practical for me. My EDC is for me is about the best legal weapon I can carry and it just happens to be a great tool as well.

During work hrs i carry work knives.....after work and on weekends i carry a more self defense oriented blade.

That is the wide variety I was expecting. I can carry in all 50 states but sometimes when I am just running to the store or the gym my knife goes in my waist band just in case. I always look at look for protection first then tool.

Tool first. Weapon when my Colt runs dry.

Tool first. If I pull a blade to defend myself, it is the absolute worst case scenario. I have taken time to train in that regard; not from Keating, but from some of his students. However, I hope that day never occurs. If I'm down to my last few rounds in a fight and I'm not putting myself between thug and my family, I'm moving backwards quickly as I empty the magazine.

Some of my knives are tools then weapons. Some are only weapons. Either way, my knife is always a consideration as a weapon.
