EDC Work or Weapon?

I like knives that can serve as a weapon but since I am rarely without at least one firearm on my person they mostly serve as tools for more menial tasks.

Used as a tool so consistently that if shtf I'd never even remember it could be used as a weapon cuz I'd be too busy looking for something to throw or hit with. (Psst. Don't forget that the floor is really great if you can hit someone with it.) :o

Tool first. Weapon when my Colt runs dry.

Yep. My knife is a tool that can be used as a weapon. Not a weapon that can be used as a tool.

From time to time this type of post comes up in general so here we go. When I was younger I ran with a rough crowd I've known more than several people who served in maximum security penitentiaries because of the three strikes rule, that means 3 felonies. Most of these people were big 6 to 6.4 and 210 to 250 with little body fat. I also had several friends murdered, including a few that got beat to death put in their car and the car pushed into a local river. I've been within 10 feet or less of 2 gun fights and saw one man shot in the face point blank during Mardi Gras one year, I could continue but I think you get the point.

I think I've laid the ground work for what I'm about to say to sink in there Georgia Guy, you pull a knife on someone in self defense you had better be one bad mother F789er, you had better be strong as hell both body and MIND, you also better know what your doing with that knife and be prepared to see it through. Gutting another man requires a very different kind of mental capacity that the average man can muster, your going to be close, close enough to hear him breath and see his eyes when the lights go dim. Very, very, very few people are gifted with the mental constitution required for such an exercise. Knife fights and or attacks are brutal, up close, dirty, very personal events. So unless your extremely physically fit, have been trained in hand to hand combat which also includes edged weapon draining and have the mental capacity and intestinal fortitude of Comanche warrior. That knife in your pocket isn't a weapon its a tool to cut stuff with, the mass of gray matter between your ears is the best weapon you have, use it to keep yourself out of places and situations requiring knife fighting. You will stay alive a lot longer.

Just some advice most and I mean the overwhelming super majority of the people on this earth who are carrying a knife for self defense would be killed by their own knife if they pulled it out. Its just not something your trained to do either physically but most importantly mentally. Run, yell for help do whatever, but man unless your one bad ombre, ala Edwood or something akin thereto, leave that knife in your pocket.

My very first knives were Emersons with the wave opener. Then, as time passed and I realized that nobody would jump me on the average month, I figured the only way they would be used is if I went looking for a fight. Not a healthy thought process to have. That, and the stupid tanto and chisel grind on the wrong side made for terrible utility, so I sold the damn things and left my brother with the last CQC-7.

Nowadays I carry $400+ customs around, so I suspect if the SHTF, I would take my chances with my fists rather than dirty a perfectly good knife.

Folks, pride and ego be damned. If you can, run like hell. The best way to avoid a fight is to not be there.

No offense, but in my experience I really get tired of hearing how it takes this and that mentality to stab a person. Not every person is going even going to sit around staring at their eyes... Half of society would just keep stabbing until he stops moving. I've been in my fair share of fights and seen my fair share of stuff too, and the idea that your compassion and hesitation to end life is going to make it hard for you to hurt/kill someone when the shit hits the fan is really not as common-place as it seems. When you're actually in a situation where your in danger, and your life is on the line, you're not sitting there looking the guy in the eyes and wondering what he's thinking, etc. At least I've never experienced that, and while I've never killed a man, I've came close a time or two and was fully prepared to and such considerations never crossed my mind. It's not even a conscious act of, "I'm going to kill this guy now, I'm conscious of the fact that I'm taking his life," it's just a frantic effort to save your own ass and when the dust clears you realize you may have gone too far.

Of course this is just my own personal experience. It's why I don't think of my knives as weapons that I can rely on though. I think of them as weapons I can resort to, but when it comes to that people should even considered their fists to be weapons of last resort. It's amazing how lethal simple blunt force trauma can be. When it comes to that, I definitely agree the best weapon to have is one's brain.

I never carry my knife as a weapon, I carry and use them as tools in good faith.

In my opinion civillians who stuff their pockets and belts to the max with multiple knives, firearms, and weapons are a bunch of ignorant, insecure, mall ninjas.

I just wanted to point out that a lot of knife attacks are from plain old kitchen knives, and I seriously doubt the user is trained in any way, and I doubt even half of them are in any decent physical shape. People are dangerous enough with blunted knives on accident. Kind of chills me to think how it might be different with a razor sharp edge with intent behind it.

I don't buy it that knives would so easily be used against the owner. Would you eagerly approach a guy with a knife? I would stand back and shoot him. And that's the thing, if they have possession of a weapon that outreaches your knife, no one would bother with the knife when there's a convenient tire iron in hand to bash your skull open with. No, the danger of the knife is if it ends up making you more aggressive, having you stay to fight when you would otherwise run away if unarmed. That would end up ugly even if you "win".

Also tool then weapon.

I often have a .40 Glock with 3 15 round mags ready to go, and a tactical folder and light as well. But recently, my slipjoints have been getting all the carry time (some times with the glock or .357 snub for company).

A few years ago I was in a city with a high rate of muggings, beatings etc (I lived there for 5+ years). I did not have my gun with me.

I was in an area where muggings are very very common.

I was sitting down on a bench and 3 less than desirable gentlemen made eye contact with me, and switched directions. Coming right for me. When they got closer, I heard one say to the other "I'm gonna take his wallet........" and another said "stomp him if he tries to stop me (or something to that effect)".

I slowly pulled my folder out (4 inch blade) and opened it while looking at them. I started cleaning my nails with the point. They stopped mid step. Blinked like deer in the headlights and started walking the other direction again.

So I am not going to say that I never think of some of my knives in the context of protection.

I carry two knives, one will be larger, sharp and unused and reserved for emergency use only. The other smaller and used for anything I need a knife for.
Will I ever use the reserved knife? Probably not, but there is always the possibility I could need it, so have it.

Both. I carry a SE Endura Wave purely for protection. I ride a bike everywhere and I work nights, so I need something in case something bad happens (and it has - I got jumped and beat up a bit once, thankfully with minimal aftermath). I have to rely on the knife because I can't bring a gun to work (nor do I even own one...yet).

I carry a couple other knives for utility purposes. A traditional slipjoint for little things and a Spyderco Tasman Salt for tougher cutting.

My knife is a tool. So are my hammer, my pliers, my screwdrivers, my socket wrench, etc. However, I would not hesitate to use any of them as an improvised defensive weapon if they were all I had. (But they won't be all I have.)
