(Aside, why is it that the carpenters/builders usually get stuck with appliance installs on custom homes?)
It's obvious, isn't it?
They are the most qualified for fitting the appliance into an existing not quite big enough/tall enough, or somewhat oversize in one or more direction(s) space during a remodel.
They are also the most qualified to do the cabinetry for a new installation, be it a remodel or new construction. 😷👍

Your response to my rhetorical question--more of a whine, really--is spot on, of course. Good carpenters need to develop broad problem solving skills, but it's hard not to feel sometimes that a narrower skill set could make life on the job easier. ;)

Here, on Cape, we're probably trending away from the situation I described. I'm mostly retired now, doing occasional niche projects for established clients, but for years was the owner/operator of a small-shop building company--much like most of the historically carpenter-run builders in our geographically-confined area. There are more and more large builders down here now with more specialization as well and I expect my recollections are somewhat different from the current reality.

Back on topic, and despite the cold and icy conditions here, I'm swimming back toward the deeper end of the knife pool from the shallows of yesterday's Tenacious to my RHK Firetac for Micarta Monday, relaxing a bit at home after beating my old self up crawling around under our kitchen cabinets yesterday.
