EDC XIII Which knife or knives are you carrying today?

A little M390 for a Monday.

Benchmade "Bugout" w/20CV blade.

The title of this book is quite misleading it seems, as it is not full of the McCarthyism I had anticipated making fun of. It apparently still has a neoconservative bias, so grains of salt are heavily recommended. Regardless, this seems like a post best relegated to the political sub forum; do we still have one of those?

On topic, I've got a Schatt and Morgan railsplitter and large 21 on me today.

A photo of a book? Get outta town. It’s about as political as the photos of guns in here. Large leap to take. Your post is political for sure though. It should be moved. 😛

Cancel culture sucks.

Disclaimer: I have no idea what the book is about because I haven’t read it. But the photo I’m fine with. Let’s not grasp at straws here in this thread.

So my wife got me out of bed way too early for a Sunday morning. Apparently, while she was taking the paper to the recycling can out the side garage door she happened upon a 4-5 ft diamondback rattler slithering its way into our side garden/terrace.

It’s a fenced in area we let the dog have access to between walks. It’s also a place we love to sit in the mornings….so a rattlesnake is a definite no-go. Deer, bears, raccoons, corn snakes and even the occasional coyote I’m fine with; heck, we love nature….but rattlers and moccasins scare the crap outta me.

After a brief debate during which my wife convinced my pre-caffeinated, somewhat groggy brain that there was no way in hell I could use a firearm in our neighborhood and grabbing the compound bow was just an absolutely ridiculous idea, I snapped too and did what any man would do….I grabbed a knife, a long pole and a shovel.

I still have no idea what I had hoped to accomplish with the knife; I just grabbed the first one that registered as a snake-killer….my Cheburkov Tukan. It doesn’t make any more sense now than it did this morning, so don’t ask.

Anyway, armed to the teeth and looking tougher than shit in my jammy bottoms and ice-cream stained t-shirt…..I gingerly made my way out to the terrace. I realized, once my wife pointed it out, that shoes probably would’ve been a good idea. But I was committed at that point and the adrenaline was pumping, so I said something stupid like “shoes are for sissies and I have the reflexes of a cat on speed, I got this shit”. For the record, a pissed off turtle moves quicker than I do and snakes pucker me up tight enough to fart a diamond. We both knew it was false bravado, yet she still let me go out there. Gonna have to give that some thought at some point.

I prodded and poked every bush, plant shrub and tree for a solid 15 minutes….but the snake was nowhere to be found. I have mixed feelings about that. I’m glad I didn’t go to war with a diamondback in my pajamas and bare feet, but I’m on edge with the effer still on the loose out there.

Guess I’ll be in boots tonight taking the dog out. Probably strap my K-bar to my thigh and keep the Tukan in my jammie pocket.

Yeah, I know….taking a knife to a snake fight still doesn’t make sense. But c’mon…..every guy on this forum woulda done the same thing. It’s just a natural reaction, right?

Lol, I’ll let ya know if and when I bag this thing…..or move into a hotel. Hope everyone has a great week!

Once again I wish we could post more than one reaction to a story. Either you are a writer or just a natural story teller.

Every time I go to write a detailed post here it just turns into "Is good knife"

Not seeking to start a political contretemps here. Just picked the book off the shelf at random. Have you any apolitical suggestions?

Sorry to derail the thread, but I just wanted to respond. I’ll try and be brief….but it’s clearly not my strong suit….

My part of Texas is inhabited by Diamondbacks, Coral Snakes and a few Cottonmouths & Copperheads. I live out in the country by the river shown in my avatar. I share your fear/trepidation: when walking I carry/use a lightweight, sharp shovel rather than a cane or walking stick. You just have to be quicker than they are! 😬
I grew up on the north side of Houston. We had plenty of cottonmouths in our neighborhood. Funny how as a kid my buddies and I thought they were cool and didn’t think twice about the danger while we were fishing the lake banks. We’d even antagonize ‘em if we spotted one. But yeah, I was a whole lot faster back then. Today I’m essentially “the bait”.

I have both those varieties here plus Copperheads and Coral Snakes, already killed a Copperhead this Spring…they can have a nasty attitude but not near as mean as Moccasins imo…stay safe!
Agreed, the moccasins are nasty, cocky and aggressive effers. I’ve killed a few over the years, but always had to recruit a few of my neighbors because the damn things don’t back down or leave….which makes me think they know something I don’t. Last one we killed there were three of us, all over 6’1” and 200 plus pounds at the peak of our physical game. It took 45 minutes of planning and debate to figure out our attack, and every time the thing moved all three of us jumped two feet off the ground and shrieked like little girls. Our wives still tell the story. Definitely not our finest moment, but we somehow managed to prevail.

most pit vipers are more scared of you then you are of them. they typically flee unless cornered. I doubt you'll see it again. if you do just give it lots of space and it will leave.

that said I dont like snakes at all, but I've learned to live with them........and there are plenty round here where I am.......
Yeah, I may be the exception to the rule. Pit vipers give me the willies something fierce. In the above tale, I spent a week terrified that the snake’s family had witnessed the kill and were plotting revenge on me. Crazy…but true.

We border a 40-acre preserve behind our house, and honestly don’t see as many snakes as one might expect; but when it gets dry like it is now they start working their way to the houses. I’d normally leave ‘em be, and I honestly don’t like killing anything….but when the kids were young and always running around outside it became a necessity. Couldn’t risk it. These days our kids are out of the house, but we have some young neighbors with little ones and our aging Cockapoo is a sitting duck. I pray I don’t see it again, but if I do…..we’ll, I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it. I may have to check my wife into the game at that point. I mean, she did let me go after a rattler in bare feet and pajamas.

Nope, I don’t do snakes
That cracked me up. Hard. Thanks!

Great story. Thanks for posting.
Thank you.

Thank you. Lol, I’m just an older semi-retiree with so little of interest going on that an “almost” snake encounter was pretty much the highlight of my week. Plus, TV just sucks these days so the forums tend to be my evening entertainment.
