Edgepro Apex = OMG!

I have an Edge Pro Apex that I received for Christmas two years ago. Only used it a few times and never really got the hang of getting a sharp edge. Dug it out last night and went to work on a crappy Wustoff untility knife. Started with the 220 and ended up on the 600. Very nice even edge but it still would not shave hair. I did make sure I created a burr on each side.

After I worked on the blade with the 600 for a while I gave up and moved on to my Sharpmaker. About 15 passes on the flat fine stones and it was shaving hair. Any tips on getting to at least shaving sharp on the 600 grit stones using the Edge Pro?

You have to raise a bur on each side of the knife blade when sharpening.

Yes, I suspect that is the problem. Not enough time with the 220 to get the bur on both sides across the entire edge. I do have to say that the bevel at 18 degrees sure does look amazing!

Thanks. :)

Based on feedback I decided to run home for lunch and play with the Edge Pro some more. I started with our "pizza cutter" knife. It is a very old Dexter 12" chef knife. It was used and abused by my father for many years. The edge was basically gone and there very significant chips across the blade. We used it to cut pizza because while it was very dull it was perfect to get through a pie on any surface.

Sorry for the poor pictures. The camera on my iPhone is pretty bad.

I spent about 15mins working to get a nice burr across the entire edge first on one side and then the other using the 220 grit. Before I moved to the 320 I did a very light single pass on each side to eliminate the burr. On the 320 I raised a bur on each side but it was much smaller. I finished with the 600 grit with the last round being very light single pass on each side. The end result was a much improved edge which would take hair off my arm. Pretty good considering I started with a knife that you could slam down on your arm with no fear of being cut. Here is the edge after the 600 grit. It still could use more time to even out the entire blade but it turned out nice for only 20 minutes of work.

Don't forget to do the same amount of strokes on one side as the other or your edge will become very uneven. I am sure you know this, but just in case, don't work on one side too long and raise a burr and then when you go to the other the burr will almost be raised immediately.

That's a great point. I'm in the process of reprofiling a rather thick blade now. I can't get a burr yet until I at least even up the angle evenly on each side. Also trying to keep track of the number of strokes so it is somewhat even.

Well I got the 1k stones and 6k tapes the other day and I still have the same problem, I just can't get a perfect finish. I've talked to Ben mulitple times, I've talked to ankerson and others, I just can't get it.

If you want to keep your edge centered on the blade, count the strokes. Put the same number on each side for each grit.

Try not to push too hard either, don't want to push the knife down and change the angle in the middle of sharpening.

Can also just cut on the push strokes and try not to put any pressure on the way down.

MINE'S ON THE WAY!!!!!!!!!! i can't wait. as soon as i get the hang of it, i'm goin get goin on those larger blades that were (for the most part) Lansky proof. my Waki and my bowie are gonna be pretty close to the top of the list :D

i got the basic kit with the one upgrade. so, i'll have: 120, 220, 320, 600, 1000. i'm pretty sure that'll cover my need. i'm also pretty such i'll end up ordering some tapes, later, though so i can join the mirror edge club too :)

Congrats! Got to see pics of those 1st mirror edges when you get the tape too. :)

The bane of my knife sharpening existance has been my Swamp Rat RMD. The original edge was so blunt that I worked for well over an hour on my Spyderco diamond rods when I first got the knife. The end result, even at 40 degrees was that the primary edge was not even close to being touched. This picture was after grinding away on the Spyderco with the recommended light pressure:

Today I worked though up to the 600 grit stones on my EdgePro Apex. The tip is still not all the way to the same angle but I touched that up with my strop after the Edge Pro. These pictures are at 600 grit but before I used my strop. After the strop the edge was frightening! Shaving hair off my arm by just touching the blade to the skin. Probably too sharp for the type of work this knife is going to do but it was fun in any case.

... and the beuaty of it is.... ANYONE can do this quickly and easily with an EdgePro! Yes, like any other sharpening procedure one does have to learn how to do it correctly. But it's not rocket science. It takes watching the video and sharpening a couple of practice blades. After that, EVERY BLADE YOU SHARPEN CAN LOOK LIKE THIS.

This is why EdgePro users rave about the damn thing. It works. Perfectly. :D
