Educate me on the Puukko.

Very nice. I'm officially jealous. I have the twin of that knife, and as much as I like mine, yours looks to have been made with greater attention to detail.

Jerk.

;)

I really appreciate the kinds words folk. 5 1/2 months seemed to take forver but it was worth the wait.

Christian, I do appreciate you pointing me in the direction and am glad you approve of it. You also helped me pick out a great Kukuri that I am enjoying when I can.

raising this thread from the dead.

i received my second knife from Martti Malinen. i believe i posted the one i had before from him. i ended up giving that away to someone who needed it more than me. but, as much as i hate to say it, i learned that i prefer a little bit of a guard on a knife (sacrilege i know in a puukko thread)...especially when field dressing deer. so, i asked for a special request....i asked Martti if he would put a finger groove in one for me. (i also asked for a "thicker" handle)

now, i have to admit when i first received it this morning, i was like, "What have i done??" but, i like it more and more the more i handle it. i think it is going to do what i wanted it to do. i.e. my hand will know where it's at in relation to the blade when i can't see it.

martti, as usual, was exceptional to work with. top notch. and, as i told him, i am still in awe at the grinds he can get on his blades. amazing.

oh, and why not. i do still have my Veikko Hakkarainen. this was when i was prepping a few pepp and chz omelettes the other weekend.

since, i suppose this is an "educate" thread, and all i'm doing is gushing...i will say that the Martti has much more of a rhombic profile as compared with the Veikko. the Veikko has a "thicker" stick (or rat) tang than did the Martti i had (per the peened end).

I like that finger groove actually! It's shallow and subtle. Plus with that red spacer it sort of draws your eye away from it hiding it a little more. I actually didn't even see it until I read the description.

Nice catch. Don't know if he told you but all his puukkos are hand sharpened with Arkansas stones then manually stropped.

even more impressive! thanks.

thanks.

Not sacrilege. Heresy. :D
:D

No, and what's a "puu witch"? Neo-Wiccan? :p

Makes sense that a knife for wood-working would have a name that comes from the Finish word for wood. Wherever it came from, it's traveled a ways: "A type of sharp, pointed knife of Nordic heritage, with a short blade and flat back; normally worn in a sheath on the waist, and used for woodcraft and as hunting knife."

thanks for your reply,

Said reply will please be via email or VM and not in a discussion thread.

One post removed. I'd guess it was being typed as I was typing mine.
However, it listed a non-BF dealer. So it would have been no good to type here anyway.

I know about the no link rule. I did not realize we could not mention the name of a non-member vendor. Sorry.

No worries. All fixed. Several years ago Spark re-balanced the way he collects enough money to keep the site up and running. When he did, the rules changed a bit. Current posting guidelines are in the sticky at the top of this forum.

I've been looking into having another Puukko made. I just read that Pasi Hurttila will no longer be making them. To bad as I really like the knives he has put out.
