Educate me on the Puukko.

Halfaxe,
The little stud on the end of the butt is very Norwegian, and they also made straight sheaths. John

That's what I thought plus the Swedes have the flared Pommels. I looked at the site where the collection pictures come from. There are many more pictures and there were a couple Norwegian knives with straight sheaths but no Finnish one.

Jon the blade is 4" or 10.2 cm from bolster to tip. The handle is 3 3/4" or 9.5 cm excluding the end stud. Blade width is 4mm or 5/32".

Tried to post it yesterday, but didn't menaged.

So in the pic, from left to right we have: Iisakki Järvenpää Aito, Pasi Hurttila tuohisarvi, Eräpuu tuohitako, Pasi Hurttila tuohipää.

Iisakki Järvenpää Oy is one of the oldest puukko factory locatd in Kauhava. The founder was royal knifemaker for tzar Nicholas II Romanov for a while and was awarded for his quality job.
Reino Känkänpaa, father of the now retired Altti Känkänpaa, worked for Iisakki for some time before starting his own business.
Aito was on of the craftmen at Järvenpää's factory. He was one of the men working for the longest time and the most skilled.

Eräpuu is a family business, based in Kemi, owned by the Kehusmaa brothers. They sell not only knives but also any sort of lappish souvenirs and clothing.
The knife in object has a Lauri blade with fake hammered finish, so to be similar to the Känkänpaa ones they used to use.

Pasi Hurttila is a full time blacksmith working in Ivalo, 30 km from Lake Inari. He worked for 10 years a wilderness guide all around Lappland before shifting forging from hobby to work.

The christmas market had some goodies by Kauhavan puukkopaja. The owner, Matti Koski, was actually there. We talked for a while and of course I had to get some of his products. I might have to visit his stand again...

Very nice! I like the way the blade on the birch handled puukko is finished, with the dimples to give it a "hammered" look. And the small one looks like a very handy little knife!

I bought the small one as a project. Lets see what I make of it. Yes, the finish on the bigger one is the reason I got it. The handle is of birch bark and very comfortable.

Matti Koski puts out a very tidy puukko and at a reasonable price, the sheathes are good too. I have puukkot from him in stainless and carbon.

Beautiful! Thanks for sharing pics. Im a numbers guy, always interested in blade length and handle length specs too :-)

Jon what is the 5th knife & sheath from the right in this picture. It appears to be identical to the first hunting knife I bought for myself 40+ years ago. However the sheath didn't have the metal trim on it. I have no idea what happened to it. If I recall correctly, it was a Mora. I sure would love to find a replacement for it. I can find Moras that are very similar, but they do not have the bird heads shaped handle. Or if they have a birds head handle, they don't have a guard. I bought it at a surplus/sporting goods store in Central WI that has closed its doors long ago. It was my first knife for whitetail deer hunting.

It looks like you may have a second one on the bottom left side of your picture.

I sure would appreciate any information you could offer.

My regards, Tom

good fortune with your search

Jon, Thank you for the reply. In my search I have been to the site you listed:
http://home.earthlink.net/~rsblade/nordic2.htm

I just don't do the social sites....I guess I'm just old fashioned and I value my privacy.

I'll try to send off an email to rsblade.

Thanks again, Tom

Tom,

I think I have that same knife. I found it on a old logging road near Stone Lake, WI. (I grew up in that area.) I'm sure it was from a hunter that put it down while field dressing a deer. I'll see if I can find it and post a picture. My grandfather also owned a small store in the Hayward area and sold a lot of hunting knives from the 1950's to 1980 when he retired.

He has also some very cool knives with reindeer bone handles. I am not sure if I liked the shape, but that is a matter of doing some modification on my own. I have been thinking of a small puukko, polished blade, maximum overall lenght 150 mm, blade lenght 65 mm. With straight line bone/wood handle. I would make the sheath myself.

dewingrm, That would be fantastic. I have a search on the auction for this knife. I've been searching for it for quite awhile. There is one that is very similar, but the fellow wants $60.00 for it. I'm thinking about it as it is very close to the one I had. It appears to be like the one I mentioned in jon_slider's posted picture.

Any help out there sure would be appreciated.

My regards, Tom

Here is a picture of what I'm looking for EXCEPT...with a birds head handle, 3.5 to 4" carbon steel blade. I believe that it was an older laminated steel blade.

SORRY this picture turned out too small.

Tom,

I just looked at my Mora and it has the guard but the butt has the metal cap similar to the top right one in the picture above. I went to a few antique stores this afternoon and didn't see any Mora's. Good luck in your search.
