I love Buck knives as much as most of you, so please don't think I am putting them down.

Today I was happy to see that my two Buck 112's came today (a day early). I mean I have been counting the days (you know what I mean ;)) I could not get the package open fast enough. Well I was a little let down to say the least. After seeing Mr. T schloz's thread about his 112, it was confirmed they were Brass bolster instead of NS. This was the first disapointment, but I got over that when I noticed how beautiful the stag was on Mr. T schloz's 112.

Today when I pulled my 112's out, they did not look anything like Mr. T schloz's 112 other than the brass bolsters (which my paper work that came with the package was even listed as NS bolsters) and the 3 dot blade. The one that had the slightest amount of bark looks to have tool marks (whatever it is, it is not natural) all over areas that were not sanded flat on one side and two nice size tool marks on the other.

The other 112 with out any bark does not even meet up with the top bolster on the back side. It is well below the bolster and very noticable.

I know I am be sounding picky, but when you are showing them off to other guys braging on how good Buck knives are, you tend to want them to look good. To me these look like they threw on what ever scrap they had laying around.

Anyway here are some pics of the two.

I ordered one and had it sent to my HOR in the states. I wont get to see it for 3 weeks. However, I did buy mine with the intent of actually using it, as I plan on matching a pair of elk 1911 grips to the knife and carrying the 112 and my Colt CC as my woods/EDC pair. I do think the deal might be too good to be true, and it might be the reason they are being closed out/web specialed is that most of the perfect ones have been purchased and this is left over stock or returns.

I was indeed very happy with the elk scales on the 112 that I received. I will say though, that I have a number of other custom Buck's with elk scales that more closely resemble the one's on your knives. I think it's just the nature of the material.

Yeah, I see what you mean. If mine looks like that it will be easy to make it a user. :o For the price I'd still be satisfied.

Elk can be rather smooth. No matter how much we'd like it to look like sambar stag, it rarely does.

Now you got a really nice one on the left with pretty scale I think. Save that one and use the other one...I have to have excuses to use certain knives too.

I've got two coming tomorrow, I'll post them along with the one I have already.

But be happy, an elk knife in 440C that's been heat treated by Paul Bos...those honey's are few and far between and for freaking $50 apiece. Christmas in June, I say!!

Hi John,

I also just had the doorbell ring and the postman handed me a package from Post Falls. I will say I love stag with a lot of bark. I don't care for it to look like white bone..now some here like their stag to look just like yours. If you don't like what you were sent get on the phone right now and let the factory store know that you want to exchange them for better looking stag....Bucks customer service is second to none and you can bank on that!

Well now back to my package. All I can say is WOW;). I got a email on Saturday that they just shipped from the factory, I thought they would not arrive for a few more days...so it was a very nice surprise.

Here is some photos

Old -VS- New 3 Dot 112's

Thanks guys for your input. I just got off the phone with a very nice lady "Janet" who is going to look into it for me.

You guys have some beautiful looking Elk horn, I hope I can get some that looks as good.

I too was looking for a Buck with stag to go with my S&W with stag. I was hoping for NS B/C I think it would look better with my SS S&W.

Thanks,
John

Dang nice grips. I wish I had a pair of those.
So, the UPS man has come and gone. Pictures to follow but I had one surprise, the buffalo scale on the 500 looked like it was coming up (I should have had my glasses on) so I start running my thumb nail along this area and the damn thing popped off. No kiddin, just popped off. I couldn't believe it and the other side was coming away from the liner too, so "I said this one has got to be glued right!!" Wrong it popped off too. And I'm telling you this wasn't like I was putting any pressure on them either. I guess its going back to see Joe H.

Just unpacked but not inspected:

The top elk and ram are the ones I've had for a while and both are better than the new ones today. The new ram has a little of a fit issue and glue showing (at least it didn't pop off). I think I may live with that and its got real good color!! Both the new elks, while not barky like JB's or even my first one has perfect fit and finish and wonderful thinkness and shape. I'm pleased with all the knives except the 500.

Should I just glue the scale back on myself?

Very nice Flatlander, It seems that everyone is getting very nice looking stag. I hate your scales popped off the 500:grumpy:.

The rams horn is looking very temptimg to me.

ONe thing I can say about the two 112's I got today is the fact that they lock up like a vault. Sometimes with the lockbacks you have a little give when pressure is applied, but these two do not have any play at all . The brass also fits very well to the backspring (no gaps).

Wow scale poppen 500. Looks like you got the gag gift:( Gordon. By the looks of that 500 frame after fiting your scales they missed the glue step. I wonder how they manage to stay in place for the polishing step. I know you can glue them back on. However, I think you better contact Joe H and let the Buck factory fix that one.

I just checked out my 500 and it has jet black scales that are properly glued on. The Sirus is also in perfect shape. So I'm a very happy camper.

Well don't feel like the lone ranger JW...
I just got home from work and had the box from Buck waiting for me. Figured I would eat my tacos and come on here for a while before I opened the box..

The first one I opened was the Ram. It looks nice, very happy with that one..
Then I opened the Elk. It definetly doesn't look like what I was expecting...
I figured it would be all smooth like the Elk 110's that have the Elk engraved on the scales, or kinda knarly. Its neither.
In fact it is almost a twin to the one on the right in your first picture

It actually looks kinda cheap. I think I would like it better if it was ground smooth all the way across, even though it wouldn't have any texture to it, but then again, it doesn't have any texture to it the way it is..
I do have to say though, it is very comfortable in hand, and the fit and finish on both of them is excellent. Flush with the bolsters, no gaps, nice blade fit and very solid lock-up...

I'll be curious to see what they end up doing with yours. I don't want to be overly picky for 50 bucks, but then again.
Maybe I could send it to Joe and have him take a sander to it:D

Thats terrible Flat... BOTH scales poppin off. Looks like it will be a nice knife when ya get it fixed

Got mine yesterday too ( one day early). Four Sirus, one 112 Elk horn and one 110 serrated. The Sirus are all great, and my 112 is very similar to the "white" looking ones pictured above with good fit and finish.
The 110 is great except it came with the cheapo sheath. I am happy!

I going to send Joe and Liz these two pictures. I wish that once I had accidentally popped the first side off that I'd just stopped so Joe could see the issue with the scales coming up. I think I'll think on this again. I know when I decided to take the cherry off the CS112 to put stag on that stuff was glued like no tomorrow.

As you can see one side shows a fair amount of glue but it just didn't hold. Must not have been Loctite 326.

After opening the first box in my package, I took a little time to open the second box. I looked over the info that came with the knife and spent a few mins. looking over the first knife. Usually I open them all at once.

I will post what their recommandation is when I receive the return call. I was told it should be some time today when I get the call.

I agree that Buck has THE BEST customer service, and they will have not problem fixing these minor problems .

Thanks for the kind words. I will email you information to the fellow that made these, if you are interested.

I would send it in to Joe, and have them look at it even though I am sure it is a simple fix (I am sure you have enough new knives to keep you busy for a while :D).

Sounds like Buck is experimenting with glue...Joe Houser needs to know about those issues...probably inspect them in person...

The brass bolsters being shipped instead of nickel is inexcusable...Those need to be returned & exchanged; you paid for nickel, you should get it...

The issue of the scales being different that shown on the Buck site is also not acceptable...yes, they won't all look alike; but the texture [bark, or smooth] should be the same as what you were shown when you ordered...

Quality control (or lack thereof) is still a big problem at Buck; despite assurances from our friends in Upper Management that it is being addressed...

Despite 334dave's cheerleading, it's better to do it right the first time, than have to send it back to be redone...

I still think that castration of the responsible employees/managers is the answer... :D
