Elk 112 came today let me know what you think

They are 50 dollar knives. Kwitchurbichin.

I disagree. They are not $50 knives, they were alot more than that before the clearance sale, so a buyer has the right to expect a nice knife that is done well. Unless they are marked as seconds or blems he has a gripe coming.

I don't know about you, slick, but fifty dollars is a lot of money to me... :grumpy:

$50 is not chump change to me either, and it really in not chump change when there are two of them with a total of $100.

These were not marked seconds and they should not look like seconds. JMHO.

BTW, I have not had the call returned yet, but I guess there is a 2 hr time difference. So there is a chance I will still hear back today.

John

It's $50 shipped. That's like a low to mid 40's retail price plus tax or internet price plus shipping. Not cheap, but it's not going to be a the quality of a custom knife.

All I know is that Buck has stated that they get more complaints about stag than any other material they deal with. If you want stag from Buck in the future, I wouldn't be sending back acceptable pieces. If I were them I wouldn't even build anything in stag, and I think the reason they have upped their prices so much in the custom shop is to recover losses from people complaining about the texture, look or shade of a material that will never be uniform.

Those are great looking knives at really cheap prices.

With all this talk of the Elk 112 for fifty bucks, I just ordered two. One for use and one for a backup. I just happen to like the Elk inserts and 440C steel, so I am looking forward to the delivery. I'll post some pics when they arrive.

I expect any knife with the buck name on it to be a solid, flawless knife no matter what the price is.It is not like buck is the only company that offers stag handles,If the one I ordered isn't what I feel it should be it will go back for replacement or refund.I wish $50 shipped ment so little to me.

Whoa there. These are black box limited editions with an original retail of around $150+.
I think the elk's quality of fit, finish, and shape is there and should be no complaints. This issue is only an appearance/grade of elk problem. People still expect the appearance and grade of scale should be up to a Limited Editions standards no matter the discounted price.

Yep, Flatlander pretty much nailed it!!! These knives were not originally produced as $50 specials, so I don't think anyone would be too happy to have paid in the $150 range and received knives with handles similar to those of johnwaynesandw.

You make a very good point, Flatlander. When John's knives are viewed from that perspective, the results are not bad at all.

I agree with that. I got my 4 knives today and they are spot on perfect. The 500 had scales that stayed on. The 112 Elk had dark scales, or sides. It also says, in each box, they have natural handle material and you can expect some markings.

The knife on the right was a little rough, I am surprised they put that elk horn on. I can see both sides. I think I would be a little dissapointed if I saw that knife when I opened it up.

JWS&W...
$50 for that "quality" is too much.
The scales not mating to the bolster is messed up. The cut on the scale going to mid-handle from the rear bolster of the one to the right is also funky.

AND THEN, to have the "very nice lady" tell you that she was going to "look into it" and call you back would really frost my muffins. What the hell does she have to "look into"?
You deserve better.

Point of reference though...when I ordered, I told them I wanted "barky" and I got it.

I don't know why you guys pull punches with Buck when something sucks. Sometimes you have to tell The Emperor he has no clothes or he may catch pneumonia and die.

Thankfully, we have a goose and a chicken to speak up!! :)

Ya know BH Its funny you mention that, because I was thinking about this same thing today..

After my 6 week wait for 2 110's to be spiffed up and return looking unfinished, I developed a bad taste. I didn't say much about it because the majority of folks report excellent service, and I know that once in a while things happen.

However its not doing Buck or any company a favor to not tell it like it is. Companies need to hear these sort of things, even if they already know.

I really can't complain about the fit and finish on my Ram and Elk 112's.
BUT, I am still a little peeved that they weren't NS as described. I like NS.
The only complaint is that the Elk scales look like they were done for a 10 dollar knife.
If I had paid 150 for this knife that I got, I would have been burnin up the phone lines.
As far as the comment that was made about it being a 50 dollar knife, true thats what we paid for them, but I have seen stag and bone on other 50 dollar knives that actually was extremely nice. As with any natural material, it is going to be next to impossible to get a good match all the time and a company can't discard a lot of material because of that. BUT there is a line to be drawn to where the material is not going to look nice and should not be used....

I still haven't decided what to do with my Elk. I'm keepin the Ram though.
If I get time tomorrow, I'll take some pics before I go to work

I like the 112 in the pic with the revolver. That does not look so much like a gap as a spot where the bark was deep in one spot. The marks on the other 112 were probably made when they were rubbed against a tree or there was a fight with another elk. Also when they shed rodents will chew on them. My brother has found many deer sheds too chewed up to keep.
My elk 112 came yesterday and the paperwork with it stated that it was brass. The inlays are not a perfect match, but the knife well made and I am pleased with it.

Well guys I after a trip to the post office and $10 later my two are back to see Joe H. at Buck. After thinking about it, I decided to send them back and ask for something nicer, and noted that if they could not replace it with what I was looking for that was fine and I just wanted a refund.

I will keep you guys up to date with what ever happens. Joe should have my package by Friday, so maybe I will know something by the begining of next week.

I recieved my elk ranger today and I have to say,it is perfect.very, very nice bark, well matched and perfect fitting handles.I was not even hoping for it to be this nice.It is custom knife perfect,I really couldn't be more pleased.I was prepared for the worst after seeing some of the pictures in this thread and was very supprised and impressed.my faith in buck has been restored.wow!

I've got enough faith in Buck that I ordered four more today. That's on top of the four that I already have coming. I know from personal experience how great their customer service is.

I just arrived back from my Blade trip and my 112 was waiting also. The scales are VERY much like the one on the left in Johnwayne's original post. It does open and close well and the blade is dead on, but what I would say is: Had I had the opportunity to hold it before deciding, I would not have bought it.

I was thinking it was specified to have NS bolsters, but the "details" don't specify bolster material?

It will be interesting to see who's makes it there first :D
After talking about it with Susan, I put mine in the mail today too..
She's a very nice lady, and has been very helpful about this. She even took the time and went through all of the remaining ones and hand picked one that she thought would look like what I was hoping for
She wanted to make sure that I was happy with the Ram 112 as well.
Yep... The Ram looks nice.

I was going to keep the Elk as a user but the more I thought about it, every time I looked at it, I just really was unhappy with it.

This is how I feel. I was going to keep at least one of them, but the more I looked at it, the more un-happy I became. I too am interested to see how it turns out as I would really love to have a nice 112 with stag scales like most of the guys here received.
