Elk 112 came today let me know what you think

Thanks Mater...But none of my other 112's or 110's have ever been that difficult...It just doesn't seem right to me, but I hate sending it back and waiting the 2 weeks for it to return or another one to be sent out...
I don't think I have another one either that I have to press as far in for it to close. I was just checking the point where it releases to close on a few of my others and they don't have to be pressed as far down as the ram or need as much pressure to push it in.

Then try opening and closing it under a fairly strong stream of tap water. I can almost guarantee that is the problem, and as Mater states, the more it is opened and closed, the more of that gunk you will get worked out. If you return it, you probably have better than a 50:50 chance of having the knife replaced with another. It will get easier, I promise!!

I'm very happy with both the Elk and the Rams Horn that I got. I hope I'm as happy with the ones still on order. Both of these work very smooth just as they should.

I just did that with mine using hot water and I actually saw black specs come out of it. It solved my problem now the knife opens easier than ever. Thanks

Those are both beauties. I hope my next Elk looks as nice as yours does.

I don't know what they use but some buffing compounds have a wax base and it takes the hot water to losen them. I would try as hot as the water comes out and you can stand, but not for half and hour......Tin's advice is from experience of a bunch of us. Even my new 300s have had to have the treatment.... That will also should reduce the dreaded circle grind on the tangs as they open and close.........300bucks

I just did the water treatment, but didn't have the luck of Mater...I'll try again in a day or so...I'm not gonna send her back though, I really like her too much and want to use her...Also I'll trust the experience here that says that time and possibly more water will help...

After I did the water treatment I took a can of compressed air and dried it. That was when I saw the black specs. I had used the air before the water and didn't see anything. Like 300 said the water must loosen it up.

I must say that is some purty stag you have on that 112 .

For a $50 'user' I can't complain.
I don't see it that way, these are not seconds. I agree with the first post, I would be a little dissapointed with those knives.

I got 4 knives from the sale. Here is my elk 112. As far as I can tell, it is perfect. I am also including a 112 stag with NS bolsters as some members talk about not liking the brass. Personally, I like the NS, but brass is fine. I think I paid around $65 or so for the stag. I think the Elk is a perfect addition to my collection.

Both of those are very nice... The NS was a big reason I ordered, but I've gotten over it. Especially on the Ram. As others stated, it looks good with the brass IMO. I'm startin to feel like a whiner :D

Which is fair enough, Peter, I appreciate your point of view. From my own perspective of 35 years in production and sales, when I see an item discounted by 66%, I just automatically figure I am dealing with factory seconds or an inventory reduction. Now, I may be totally 'out to lunch' on both assumptions in this case and had Buck given a reason for such a heavy discount, this would all be a moot point. However, as there were only one hundred Elks made, I can only presume that overstock is not a factor, which leaves factory seconds.

Anyway, I don't believe that you are wrong Peter and I do believe that Buck should have clarified the condition and reasons for sale on the 112 Elks.

I by no means have the experience that you have. With that said: if they were/are in fact factory seconds, they should be listed and marked as such right? These were not listed nor marked with any kind of seconds.

John

I don't believe the one (elk 112) I received, could possibly be a second. It was nicer than most of my Custom Shoppe knives.

Absolutely, John. If they were listed in 'as is' condition, it would give a heads up to the buyer and cover the keister of the seller. As it stands, the buyer has every right to expect the top notch fit and finish they would find on any other Limited Edition. So, from my experience base, I didn't expect 'top drawer', but that sure doesn't mean that others shouldn't expect the best.

I remember reading somewhere that Buck does not have seconds. Any knife that does not meet their standards they sell or donate the knives and they are use in third world countries. I have never seen a Buck second, so there may be something to that.

They may not have "seconds", but they do have, and do sell, "blems" or "blemishes" and the blades are stamped with a "B" to denote same.
