Real Sweet Congress!!

Thanks Charlie and Robin!

It's just a joy to experience the quality of the craftsmanship. I have never owned a custom but I suspect this is close to how one might feel.

I always suspected by looking at Charlie's beauties.:D

I really appreciate you gentlemen's compliments, Mike and Duncan!

Gevonovich, if it is Gentleman you are referring to then I am afraid Mike will only get that message, but thank you anyway :D
And I'm sure I can speak for Mike as well to say it is a pleasure to lay eyes upon such a neat knife!

Beautiful knife! And very useful blade combination.

I'm glad you identified the garbanzos, because I was thinking, "If those are walnuts that is one HUGE pocket knife!"

Semantically, I stand corrected, Clanman! But fine human being...you prove my point.

Doug

Thank you and thanks for the laugh

Welcome back to this Elusive thread, Gentle women and men!
And you who claim not to be Gentle as well! (we know better!);)

I have here an interesting knife that's been shuttling around on my desk, waiting to be scanned. First one I have seen - any other opinions about its rarity are welcome.
I've seen and owned a few English Jacks, but never a Lock Back. Until now that is; it has met the dreaded buffing wheel somewhere, but has managed to retain the majority of its goodness!

Very lovely bone and the bolster is interesting. I have not seen an Cut Co lock back English jack before.

Saw one like this only once, I can't recall when and where but this one is sheer beauty. Do you have some sort of old Schrade magnet? I want one of those :D

Charlie,

Your Schrade English Jack is a wonderful find. I cannot address the rarity of the single blade Lock Back.

I feel little foolish about my comments that follow, because everything that I know flows, in one way or another, from your postings in Elusive Schrades. I highly recommend re-reading Waynorth's first posts in this thread, his post #35 and Ken Erickson's #40.

I truly love the Peach seed Bone and the threaded Long Bolster. They remind me of one of my favorite production American knives; the two blade English Jack that you and Mark Nagle (#35)posted very early in this thread.

My sincere congratulations and appreciation to you for finding and sharing this wonderful EJ.

Dan Dan Burke (or maybe Waynorth) told me that a knife similar to the 2 blade English Jack with threaded Long Bolster (mentioned above) was in an early Remington Catalog. I am sure you know this better than I do. All of my knowledge and interest in these beauties was sparked by your efforts, and the many knowledgeable experts posting in this thread. I think you asked Ken Erickson to make the beautiful non-locking 2 blade version with slight changes to the bolster.

Some of the knowledgeable regulars in this sub-forum may have the answer at their finger tips.

I think Dan Burke adapted the Long Fluted Bolster for some of his knives.

Many of you have the AG Russell reprints, but AG may have other references that he has not re-printed.

Again, thank you for another great share.

Mike H.

Wow!, please forgive me, the term English Jack?, how does this shape get this name, its very much like a Trapper isnt it!

Yet another Stonker there Charlie! I love the Bolster as Gevonovich has already said.... the early English jacks did have elaborate Bolsters such as this, I have one VERY battered English knife that has similar Bolsters.

Not really like a trapper, Duncan. A trapper is a somewhat large serpentine pattern, and has two full length blades, usually a clip and a spey
"English Jack was a term commonly applied to deluxe, large sized (over 4") slim, regular and sleeveboard Jack knives. Premium handle materials, fancy bolsters, and locking master blades are often seen on them." Bernard Levine in LG IV.

Mike, This scan is from a 1910 catalog though it has a spear main blade instead of a clip. I like that they call the bolster "fancy". :)

Thanks for adding your research, Jake!
This thread hibernates for long periods. Here is its, and my, latest wake up call; I must get down to the NKCA museum one of these days!!
Our friend Mark N. took this one when at the NKCA Museum. Notice it includes my rare lockback EJ!!:)
