Enough already! What BAD things can we say about the SAR4?

I wish I could add to the pile of wrong things, but mine is not here yet either!

The only negative about that knife is a CG hasnt been made yet. I cant afford a LE anytime soon. Getting involved with this forum has killed my bank account.

If it's not in your hand then it does'nt count. One does not need to use 'the rounded spine' to make sparks, USE the dang Gimping! Mine's throwing sparks like fireworks, who you kidding:confused::thumbup:

The better to baton with and use with a gloved hand as in SAR MISSION!

At least one user has reported that (while correction has been offered by Busse Combat) the gimping can be quite sharp. This was with the HG55 if I am not mistaken, but the gimping is the same as the SAR4.

I'm sure the SAR4 is great, but for me the SAR5 is "precious." More knife in a more compact package.

It made me a lot poorer..

I got my Registered EDP-accountant title last tuesday, so I thought what the heck, I'm gonna order one to celebrate my promotion. Now considering that on top of 340 bucks (40 bucks for international shipping) I have to pay at least 100 bucks of import taxes..

440 bucks is a lot for a knife, but somehow I could not resist it.

Those who think the SAR-5 is a better knife than the SAR-4 LE should check out the Lunde's comparison photo (a SAR-5, a SAR-4 LE, and a "Hello Kitty" pillow) on the nearby SAR-4/HG55 thread. No wonder Jerry HATED the SAR-5; he probably had the image of the SAR-4 in mind all along.

You won't regret owning the SAR4.

Yes the gimping on the HG55 and SAR4 is similiar but mine, in hand, SAR4 does not have sharp edges on the gimping, enough to cut you anyway. The only sharp edge on my SAR4 is the blade edge. I have a few SAR5's and a user to compare with, so yes, the SAR5 is a smaller knife. I think the SAR4 serves a much larger capacity as a SAR Mission knife, and as such was made with that in mind. One knife carry, and good to go! Neither knife is a slouch so enjoy what you have HLee!

BCS lists the SAR4 LE at $397. Sounds like $300 + $40 for shipping is quite the deal, but I'm not an accountant.:foot:

bingo....:)

mine did arrive today! better be tomorrow so i can play with it this weekend! The receptionist at my office gets nervous when i run to her desk when the mail comes! and she keeps telling me to relax.... i better get that bottle of laphroig opened!!!

HLee if you have'nt bought this knife then do get with someone to do a side by side comparision for us. I ask this because of your avatar as a hunter. I won't be able to go and use this knife any time soon on a hunt, but you may. It would be nice to see from your vantage point, thank you.

WOW! I got a "bingo" from the fabulous Amy-O!
Now THAT makes my day! (of course, my SAR-4 didn't arrive yet today...)

The SAR4 has been taunting me as it is still on the BCS. But, I have put myself on restriction from all knife purchases for the forseeable future. This is what I dislike most about the SAR4.

I like the SAR5 because it is either blade or handle. Nothing there not either meant to hold on to or to cut with.

The SAR4 is much bigger than what I expected. I was thinking something more in the AD to MS range. From the Lunde comparison it is more like a Batac. With the two Batacs that I already have, and the two SAR5s that I have, I am pretty well set in that size range. I was really looking for something in the 3-4" blade range. Something between the game-warden and and the SAR5/Batac size range. For me, the ideal skinning knife is a caping knife. I don't break the brisket or the pelvis when I clean a deer, so I prefer a more scalple (sp?) like knife for that work. I also don't find a big belly terribly advantageous for skinning work. Skinning a warm deer is more about pulling the hide off, and cutting where it gets stubborn, then possibly having to navigate tight quarters. This is better served with a thin pointy knife. The SAR4 is dead sexy, but it fills a role over-represented in my current collection. And, I told myself I couldn't by any more knives.

Thanks for your reply HLee, you make some valid points. I hope that Jerry brings us a SAR3 that is .125-.150" thick and the shape of the SAR4! But I do agree most folks were expecting a smaller OAL knife IMO. It is a beautiful knife and for folks who need this knife it should work well for them. It was designed with SAR in mind not hunting specifically so there is some leeway here for the knife's usage IMO. This knife will take you there and bring you back IMO/E. When you need brute strength the SAR4 has got it, and the convex edge on the Full Height Grind is a thing of beauty to slice with.

If you get an inkling to use one sometime I might just ship mine out to you.

i just realized that the shape of the handle's insweep is nullified if you hold it at the back end. sigh... I don't know why knife makers want their users hand to be so far away from the blade.

SAR5 was before I got back on BFC. Jerry 'hates' the SAR5? 'Hate' is a strong word :)

the story was that he got drunk and handed garth the prototype drawings, when he meant to give him the finalized drawings. so what jerry got was a knife that had not been modified to get rid of all the things he disliked about the proto. the hammer grip, a slightly shallow index finger curve, and a couple others. so it's not just that he doesn't like the knife (and he has specified as much), it's also the unfortunate instance of it's creation that probably bugs him about it.

Oh ..............HE HATES IT...I am not kidding....LONG STORY SHORT...

He gave the crew the wrong design...They made it...HE WAS MAD....

Look at his posts about it:)

CA hunting licenses are supposed to go on sale later this month, and the draw deadline is June 1. I'll know what I am going after sometime after that. I'm definintely going to try and put a few feral pigs on the ground this year. I may just take you up on this when I figure out when I am going. With any luck I'll have enough shooting to compare my Knives of Alaska caping knife, my game warden, my SAR5, and potentially a SAR4.
