ESEE-3 Folder!?

Hey Jeff, my one beef with the DPX HEST/F is the thickness of a blade, for me if I want something that thick I would go to a Fixed Blade. Is this one going to keep to the 1/8" thickness of the original ESEE-3 because to me that would be perfect. I love that thickness as I feel it is a great balance between its ability to slice well and still being robust.

I just do not know what the final production ESEE-3 folder will be like. That's the reason for prototypes. To beat the hell out fo them and use them then tweak the production models based on what we find.

You don't say. Ever felt the ESEE jimping? It isn't cutting into anything.

Yes, I own and love my ESEE Izula and I don't understand why the smooth jimping is there. It's not sharp (then I simply would not use it) but no jimping at all would surely be smoother still.

Ok, you caught us. We put it there because it just looks cool :D

Maybe some people's thumbs are just not tough enough for the smooth ESEE jimping?????????

Hi Jeff! No it's true that I don't have the hands of a mason.. but good, skin friendly ergonomics will always be better to work with callous hands or not.

Otherwise I'm a fan of ESEE's work and I understand what sells (what's in fashion) and what is functional is not always the same thing.

:)

I understand. But the fact remains that most people like the jimping, including me so we put it on there. ;)

Plus it's tactical and balances the knife for throwing.

Exactly. Just like fletching on an arrow it keeps the blade flying true in the air when it's doing all that real world important business of taking out bad guys at 10 meters.

Ha ha ha! It does indeed look cool. And with my previous post I did not mean to imply that you were compromising your (admirable) integrity when it comes to design and manufacture, I was wanting to say that design is a complicated thing and I appreciate that.

Jimping or not, I'm sure it will be a terrific knife.

Cheers

Depends on the weight, and I really like the oversized handle on the Military. :)

Nice looking knife, maybe this one will make it into production? ;)

As opposed to what, the Izula folder that they’re working on with Rowen or the Laser Strike that has only been announced it will return for a month?

Bottom line is Josh is right. We have dropped the ball on folder production. We are pushing though. Folders are a different beast and we don't want just anyone doing them for us. If Chris Reeve had shop time then that's who would make the ESEE folders. Regardless of price.

I don't carry folders anymore, but I will say, this one has me intrigued. I may have to start carrying folders again. My Case stockman got pulled out of mothballs and sharpened last night, so, who knows.

Excellent! That's the way to develop one kick ass knife. I think too many knife designers/manufacturers skip this part of the process because they just don't have the knowledge or desire to put their knives through the proper paces and make changes where necessary to make them better. Of course this is what ESEE is all about and it is what keeps me coming back. I'm definitely looking forward to this folder (I don't know if my Spyderco Manix 2 which is sitting in my pocket as I type can say the same). ;)

This is a render by Tom and will be very very close to the actual finished piece. I think clip placement holes may have moved slightly from this render. BTW: it will be 4-way clip placement, frame lock and removable glass breaker. Have not settled on anything else such as final handle material, balde steel, coatings, etc. This is simply a work in progress, Not sure when we will even release it or go into production. Gianni is sending about 5 prototypes to us. We want to carry them for a while and beat the hell out of them before we ever do production.

So I assume this won't be made by ROWEN?

If you want to test it in the cold, wet, snowy, Alaskan environment, I can be of service to you. :D

looks amazing. i honestly think from handling both the sebenza and the lionsteel sr1, they both seemed to be the same quality. realistically i prefer the sebenza,, but that is because of mainly the more attractive (imo) looks and the thinner blade. one question is, will the esee-3 folder be thumb flickable opening?

Very nice, im looking forward to this one, i dont edc i fixed blade but do edc a folder, looks like ill get one of these asap.

WOW!!!:D I can't wait to see how this comes along! That's gotta be one of the best looking folders that I've ever seen. The best part about it is how simple it is.
