Yep, the coating is not covered.
It is also well known that you'll sometimes get a snarky e-mail.

From what I've read by them online, it sounds like your e-mail was responded to by one of the owners and not some CS-rep.

Coating not covered, I think the sheath is not covered either, nor are the scales, it's really just the blade-blank itself, and only if it's 1095.

OP, why not list the knife for sale here on BF? (Gold membership required) If the knife itself is still in good working order, minus coating and some rust, then it is still serviceable in another line of work.
In the meantime, you can get a blade from another maker/manufacturer, including Ontario or Kabar/Becker, or you could even get yourself something like a Gerber Strongarm = inexpensive, stainless, lifetime guarantee. Pics of the ESEE?

Well they say no questions asked, and it's true, they didn't ask any questions. Instead they flat out said you were lying about the fuel causing the coating to bubble.

If you had deliberately shot the knife multiple times they would have replaced it, but not if the coating fails in service? That makes no sense at all.

I own their Izula 2 and ESEE 3 but I won't be buying any more of their products after reading their rude replies.

I guess that is my main point. I told them what happened when I could have just put it into a vice and snapped it and sent that in and it would have been covered.

Some people in your situation might do exactly that.

And by the way, the warranty doesn't say that the coating isn't covered period, only that normal wear of the coating isn't covered. Bubbling caused by fuel isn't normal wear imo.

I agree with the Busse comments, they are great knives that carry a fantastic warranty.

Yep I stand by every word. Anyone that knows us knows we will replace any broken blade no matter how it is broken. The warranty has never covered coating, edge going dull or rust from day one. If the coating had been coming off, blistered when he bought it then you bet we would have replaced it. That is defective coating. But wear isn't a warranty issue (JP8 (jet fuel) did not take the coating off.
And yes I can be 'snarky' in my replies-- read his immediately before, he merited what he shoveled out:)
I like Jerry Busse by the way. Buy that next time:) Mike

Yeah, ESEE has based its reputation on a warranty that it does not back. It can do this because most people don't use their knives all that much or at least that hard (just a fact, not a bad thing), and don't ever actually need to use the warranty. People just repeat the same old chorus of praise that they hear from other people because it feels good to think a company stands behind its products. In reality their warranty is very much not "no questions asked" and is deceitful at best. Meanwhile their representatives are anti-consumer elitists who criticise the people who have the nerve to actually take their word and try to use the warranty, sometimes even posting private communications on their forum.

After you actually try to use their warranty and deal with their representatives, I guarantee their wording of the warranty and use of the picture of a blade that was shot that they replaced "no questions asked" as a pure marketing gimmick will make you think twice about buying their knives again.

This thread leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Not in a bad way, but it reminds me that there ARE other companies with no-questions-asked Warranties. Recently, companies with names starting with B have been catching my eye ;)

Maybe we should continue suggesting alternatives to the OP?

Well, there you have it.

I'll still buy ESEE products when the design appeals to me ( and the Canadian to USA exchange rate makes prices better...), but this thread should allow others to decide for themselves ahead of time if they want to.

The funny part to me is how many folks on the forums are so into stripping the coating as soon as they get the knife...in which case the warranty claim would never have happened at all! :D

Stick with Busse

Had one...was too small to me, so I gave it to my dad.

The first thing I did was strip the coating, then put an edge on it that would actually cut things.
Handle ergonomics were superb though.

There are even some custom makers here on the forums which are a pleasure to deal with and offer great service. Even some with discounts to Servicemen/women and LEO's and other first response personal.

The only reference I can see to coating in your warranty states, "We use a baked on powder coat on all of our coated knives. It is normal for the coating to wear with use."

Can you point to where it says that the warranty doesn't cover coating?

And on what planet is this a "no questions asked lifetime warranty"?

I'm definetly going to look into that. I had sent it in to get ready for hunting season and was going to buy one of crazy colored ones for my wife as well as the kitchen knives esee supports. So I guess I'm in the market for three knives now.

Okay, sorry, but this confuses me.
When you were talking about rust and food prep it made some sense, but why would a nice coating be helpful when ripping the guts out of an animal?
You kinda lost me on that one.

I love ESEE. I'll continue to buy them as I need them. Not an attack on the OP, but ESEE has been known to tell it how it is…and I love this about them.

Yep, telling it like it is and sticking to your guns is old school cool. Thumbs up for Esse.

I get rained on or snowed on a lot when sitting out in the woods for extended periods. I couldn't find an effective way to prevent rust on it that would still be food safe. All of them wore off after a few days in the field. Plus cleaning a deer puts a lot of moisture on that blade and if I had ardy been out for several days and the mineral oil had worn off the deer blood would rust it out fast.

Yep, stick with Busse. Ya'll have a nice day, Mike

Telling how it is indeed then, eh Pokerface. But seriously, if you consider hunting knives made by knife makers here your options expand greatly and you still might spend less than a Busse...or maybe just go Scrap/Junkyard and never be happier! :D
