Esee lost a customer today

The "knife" is warranted That would include the handle and exclude the sheath.

You would think, being that the handle is part of the knife, but the handle and hardware are not covered.
Hopefully you can see the problem with that. We see this all the time in the hard use folder market. People believe the advertising, use the knife for things not covered by the warranty, and are shocked when the knife breaks. People really need to read the fine print and if you still have questions, ask the company.

I'm betting you won't be suggesting any more Esee knives but I hope you are fair when you represent this issue to others. The only thing Esee did wrong here is get nasty, but again, if you did your research on the company you would see this is not out of character. Use the knife Derek is sending in good health but read the warranty. Their stainless knives are not covered no questions asked.
Can you honestly say that you believe the ESEE warranty is worded honestly and transparently?

Not totally. I can see where the scales could be an issue. Then again, if they get broken when thrown I can see Esee not being very comfortable with replacing them given the warning to not throw your knife. Breaking stuff in such an irresponsible way and then expecting to have it warrantied just makes cost go up for the rest of us who use our tools the correct way.

The coating, which is the heart of this thread, is a non-issue. What company warranties blade coatings? The warranty clearly says wear and tear is not covered. Can you honestly say that their policy on the coating is unclear?

Anyway, seems like this thread has gone about as far as I care to pay it attention. The OP learned his lesson it would seem. Read the warranty. With that, I'm out. If you all want to keep arguing over this have at it.

It's no secret that Mike is a grumpy old ass, never has been.
I'll bet someone who cares more than me could search and find about a half dozen threads from GBU where someone has contacted ESEE (dumbass or not) and been talked down to by Mike.

You are right!, and I also get grumpier with age.

Mikes response is what it is. I simply said "Stick with Busse" to the OP because he wants a Bulletproof warranty. ESEE doesn't have one. Busse does have a true "no questions asked warranty" so maybe it's my fault for not explaining my comment. This has definitely snowballed since my post though. To be clear, I wasn't trashing ESEE, I was simply saying, "If what you want in a knife is a bulletproof warranty then buy a Busse." It's like buying a Honda and being upset that it doesn't go 200MPH. Go buy a Ferrari. You get what you pay for.

Nice gesture Derrick. Leave it to a fellow 'knife guy' to step up. (ps. Love my new 0450cfzdp!)

This thread could be a case study in a marketing class.

I think it's more like buying a Honda and when it comes time for an oil change, you take it in and ask if the oil change is covered under warranty, and they get belligerent with you and tell you to go buy a Ferrari. So what if the coating isn't covered under warranty, any respectable business man would offer to recoat or replace the blade for a nominal fee, not tell them to hit the road.

Don't get the hate.

They're 100% right. If he had read the warranty he would have known it wasn't covered. He would have also seen the request to contact them by email before sending the knife in which would have prevented the wasting of both parties time.

People just ignoring your businesses clearly stated policies/requests has to be a little frustrating.

My thoughts as well. No knife company is going to blanket cover blade coatings. Seems like the OP was a bit snarky with the ESEE guy ....plain to see in his post, and the ESEE guy just gave it back to him. ESEE could have handled it a bit better, but then the OP goes and posts here - bashing the company because they do not cover blade coatings or sheath wear. Don't forget that the OP jacked the blade up by sanding, etc. How can you expect a company to cover that too.

Again, the ESEE person could have remained a bit more cordial; but I imagine some people get tired of the dog piling that goes on in the site sometimes. He knows he is not going to win here anyway. I do not blame him.
In the end, this whole thread is kind of BS. When you don't follow a return policy, expect something to be covered under a warranty that is not (and you also jack up the blade yourself), then get a little snarky, then post a thread on a major knife forum ....gee its surprising the ESEE guy told you to go buy another knife. So, you did not really like his straight to the point answer ...................... I mean really, was it that big of a deal? You guys wonder why makers, dealers etc don't come here as much as we would like to explain their end? Stuff like this. People need to think before they go off on a witch hunt and use some analysis to understand the root cause of the problem. Anyway, maybe I am just cranky today.

Such a basic concept. Why does the warranty exchange have to be so troublesome?

Seems like a title change is in order for this thread....Esee lost MANY customers today. This isn't the first time I've seen this Mike Perrin character make an ass out of himself. But this instance did etch in to my brain exactly what company he represents. I'll definitely heed his advice if I ever think about purchasing an Esee.

It hasn't changed my mind about EESE. I own 4 now and one day I will but the EESE 6 I have been wanting. Mike Perrin reminds me of Thomas
from ZT, snarky and condescending. That has not stopped me from buying ZT's either. I own about 8 of them.

I have at least 6 ESEE knives. I really don't care about the warranty. If it chips or breaks, I'll either repair it or give it away. It's really the poor atitude of the owner that is disagreeable.

I guess no Junglas for me in the future. This took care of any interest/plans I ever had for any ESEE knife.

Busse doesn't have to worry much about warranty claims when most of their owners only take glamor shots of them and never get used. It's always been a running joke how everyone raves how tough their knife is and you can clearly see it's only cut paper if that.

Just use your Esee, it's only a freaking tool and so is Mike, and neither is ever going to change.

If you wanted the Junglas though, you're only punishing yourself.

I was on the fence, honestly. This just made me fall on one side :).

Sticking with Beckers and when I can shell more $, I'll rather go with a custom.

The only issue I had, overall, regarding the OP's experience, was the owner's attitude. Having dealt with a large user base as a Customer Support Manager (sometimes with users that should not touch a computer, let alone trade futures and options on our platform), I know a thing or two both about frustration, as well as how one should deal with it...with people, even abrasive ones.

Plenty of good steel out there from good folks, to choose from.

That's cool then. :)

I just wouldn't deny myself a cool knife because I felt someone was a dick, but if I were not quite sure I wanted it, such things could be the deciding vote.

I worked telemarketing for two months...I swore at a lot of customers, and hung up on them before they could do it to me. :D
Anyone looking for a great customer service guy probably should not hire me. ;)

I see your point. Although, seeing how someone treats his customers, may raise some legitimate questions, on how the same person would honor his word in other situations...as well. Oh well - speculation on my part.

What does this reply have to do with the warranty of the knife in question-Guy serve's his country uses his knife, does some damage, and the manufacturer will not fix it-I am a Busse knife owner-do that with a Busse and see how long it takes before the owner tells you to send it back and he will repair it-excuse me I have a glamour shot to attend!!

Mine either. They are great knives for the money--tough to beat, actually.
