Etiquette when posting in for sale ads

I don’t consider offering 6% less a lowball offer but I’d prefer any offers be made outside the sales thread.

If you can’t send a private message or email leave a visitor message on the sellers profile page.

My reasoning is this: if the seller openly accepts lesser offers it negatively affects their image to other potential buyers, either by showing they're easy to haggle with or they knowingly priced their goods higher than they thought it was worth. Is it a super big deal? No. But I'd rather just take the extra step of discretion and let the seller's asking price stand publicly and make any offers privately.

Good point I can see that. My only argument would be the seller was open to offers maybe just not publicly and with other items for sale it could hurt them.

Which ultimately brings me back to options for buyers if the seller does not provide an email. The most respectful is just provide an email and say I’m interested and have an offer. BUT then I would be violating rule 5 still per Charlie

Edit...forgot about the visitor message thank you for that option!

Why can't charlie2times report the offending (offensive to him) post to a mod? If something's wrong with it, a mod can deal with it, as they have the tools to do so.

I don't think offering someone $10.00 less than what their asking, to be low-class. Anyway, I'm surely not an expert, when it comes to selling, or buying, here.

Anyway, I don't think that either of these dudes are bad fellers. But, one does seem to be a bit more ornery than the other, that's for sure! :p

I too am in the camp that it is bad form to make any offer in a sales thread. You can always say that you are interested please email me at --------- and then reply with the offer to the email. I will ask the poster to edit, or for a mod to delete the offer post and otherwise ignore. I do typically say in my thread - no comments or offers in sale thread please.

As for the "helpful fellow" jumping in to reprimand - that guy is boldly violating the BF Exchange rules and he/she should mind their own business. Now that person is just adding to the :poop:hole in my sales thread and taking all the fun out of it. Really sucks to have a pile of dung in your sales thread, whatever the source or intent.

My 2¢

I appreciate all the comments guys its good to hear everyone's opinion in a constructive manner as we all have different takes on things. I have definitely learned from this so it was all for the best in the end!

If there is a next time, K Kustom Kutz , you need to report it pronto. I do agree that offers should be made outside a sales thread.
Here's what I've learned about knives for sale that are in demand and at a good selling price, if you fizzle fart around and make an offer, you're wasting your time as well as the sellers. Bite the bullet and if you really want the knife, pay the asking price. Also take into consideration, it costs to ship the knife and PayPal takes their share. For future potential buys, ask yourself if a few bucks is worth not getting the knife.

Good points I agree with you!

Lessons learned i would report anything like this in the future but there is no if about it there won’t be a next time unless I see it happen to someone else!

Good advice for sure. Stuff that's priced right and desirable will sell on here fast. Just watch the classifieds for a bit and you'll see stuff go minutes after it's up. For something that's been up a few weeks the seller would be more likely to entertain an offer.

The good thing here is that there a lot of knives up for grabs so if you do miss something you wanted another one will come up.

Looks like this isn't his first violation eh
Oh no that guy loves to crap all over threads. But in one of earlier statements I quoted. He said yes I did break the rules and I would do it agian. So it’s obvious he cares little about how things are supposed to work here or the rules that spark has set.

Once non buyers start posting in your sales thread, the situation usually turns into damage control mode, and then there is the problem of having to wait the two weeks to repost and recreate a clean thread, if the knife goes unsold.
I think that the issue is about losing potential buyers, who may just bypass a cluttered thread, thinking that the item has already been sold.

Wow. What a mess.

On the topic of offers in threads, I don't make them and nor do I want them in my thread. I believe it has only happened a couple of times to me and I do not think I ever sold the person the knife, might have even just put them on ignore. Further, it does appear that making offers in a thread is against the rules.

On the topic of people crapping in a sales thread and messing it all to hell, I had this happen one time. I reported it and I believe a mod removed the offending post(s) very quickly. So thanks for that!

And on to what I consider the far more important issue raised in this thread, charlie2times charlie2times needs to stop consistently breaking the exchange rules. He has gone above and beyond to do so multiple times and has professed his intent to continue. In this thread alone we have 4 examples. If he hasn't already, he should get dinged for each one of those and any further transgressions.

Charles, a guarantee that many people who frequent here and the exchange will be looking out for you.

And just to help people not having to search this thread for the offending threads, here they are:
