Hey John don't feel bad, both of those companies have made some good knives, but you have certainly improved your taste...lol

I recommend the BK5. Your other knives blow.

Clich my friend, that is sig worthy.

And Derek, you are making a great point there. when I started out with knives, I was buying cheap chinese crap. I would not buy a knife that was over $20. I did not know what a real knife was. Until I found Becker, of course.

I'm with you, Derek. I have seen what you are talking about, and it makes me not want to spend too much time on those forums, especially when we have such a good thing going here on this forum. Life's too short to waste it being a jerk or reading the jerky things some people have to say. I have better things to do with my time...

I'm ashamed to report that my first knives were gas station specials. Of course, it took some doing to get a knife at all, because my parents were sheeple in the worst sense of the word, so I had to surreptitiously buy cheap knives at the gas station, because that was all that I could afford. Wasn't til I graduated college that I got anything really worth having. I remember the days when I thought that generic "high carbon steel" was the be-all and the end-all, and didn't have a clue what 1095 was, or 5160, or CPM154, let alone M390 or S35VN. I'd probably have been ecstatic to have a Cold Steel knife; it would have been head and shoulders above the other crap I had.

My first real knife was a Benchmade Monochrome. I had that for nearly 10 years before it was stolen out of my jacket pocket at the doctor's office. Didn't discover Becker until I went searching for fixed blade knives I could EDC. After that kind of start, I can't really fault anyone for their knives. I'm usually just excited to see them carrying something, and even more excited when they've got something that's better than a Gerber or some other readily available low quality cheapy. CRKT and Cold Steel are a huge step up from what most people carry, if they carry anything at all.

Great thread! As someone relatively new here I must say this is one of the best places I've seen on the internet and I really appreciate the camaraderie here and all of the helpful advice. I also want to extend a thank you to Crimsonfalcon07 for hooking me up with an awesome set of handles for my BK11. This place rocks!

I dunno. I've seen very knowledgeable woodsman use "crappy" knives to great effect and computer ninjas that couldn't use a "quality" knife to save their life. Kind of what Greybush was saying about his friend with the gerber. And even other very experienced backpackers who have survived the harshest conditions with no knife. I think skill trumps any knife out there. I don't talk about knives with people around me because their knvies don't interest me. Not because I look down on them. If you really want to help people with their knives don't tell them what knife is better, teach them what a sharp knife is and how to get those results. All of the self proclaimed knife guys I know have crappy edges on their knives. If they have an edge at all. I'd gladly take a gerber POS and the knowledge to keep it sharp over any becker that's dull and no knowledge of how to sharpen it.

This is blasphemy! Actually it's how I read it the first time around, kinda just skimmed the post and then when I saw this I was like "That wasn't right.... time to reread that."

Just having fun, please don't call the gods down on me :D

Good points, DerekH. I am new to Beckers and just bought two of them based on large part from reading this forum. Forums are a great place not only to get accurate information but to also meet some very nice people. You sometimes even get to meet some of them in person.

I have to say that being new here and new to quality knives, this board seems very laid back and genuinely interested in educating others in The Way of the Becker and not bashing you because you because your folder costs less than you last house payment. hehe

good OP, and then some of those posts later just show what the bromance is all about :)

y'all a bunch of bronies i think :D

Thanks for posting this. I was just in another forum (not going to name names) and was pretty bummed when someone posted about a knife they ordered and how pumped they were about it. The responses were pretty rough.

I love some knives that other people here can't stand, my Bear Grylls Scout Folder being one of them.

That said, this forum remains to be one of the friendliest on BF (tied with Traditional IMHO).

Boom. The gods are not happy.
Around here, if you had a first knife it was a cheapo. Mine was a cheap noname lockback that I got from selling boyscout popcorn. I spent hours looking and lusting after a 200 piece set for around $180. Then I saw the cold steel solid proof video and the race for quality was on.

Here's a good example of what happens when a decent forum goes to hell...Bunch of Elitist D'Bags there...This was posted today..This kid was really proud to show off his goods..He probably will be too embarrassed to come back to the forum again

The generosity of the this place and the BHs astound me! It's very refreshing in the world we live in to see that there are still people with ''the right stuff'' out there! Makes me feel better knowing the whole world aint populated by aholes and dbags LOL

I find myself struggling to find ways to ''pay it forward'' to an extent that reflects how much I have received!

I would like to thank the Academy, and my loyal fans, and TradeWater, Mighty1, Greyboosh, CrimsonFalcon and Timberweasel get mad props, and I'd also like to thank everyone who helps make this place so informative and fun.

group hug?

anyone? no?

...ok then, moving along....

That example right there is why I don't post much. I have been a member of many forums and discussion groups over the years...Even back before Gore invented the internet. I used and ran Bulletin Board Systems, and its always been the same. I read to learn from those who know and share their knowledge. The problem is that in ALL forums there is always the self appointed guru or expert and those that follow them. If you post an opinion contrary to popular belief or opinion, you're set upon by the masses, or called a troll. I am far too old to fight like that anymore although I still occasionally get fired up. I start posting once I feel comfortable in an area that has polite humans that can agree to disagree if need be... or have enough respect and friendships to be able to call each other an asshole or worse.... Been on BF since '09.. and the largest percentage of my posts are in Becker.... That says something for this group..

I hear that. I asked a guy who is an "expert" on the forum a simple question about a tool he was posting about and he couldn't even answer it. Since then I've been looking real hard at some of the people who are "experts" on various forums and have come to realize that outside of their set style of camping/survival, they don't know much. These people are considered experts/gurus for more political/social reasons then their actual knowledge base. Group dynamics. Got love it. Or hate it. I'll pick hate it just because I can't understand why someone would follow a dumbass. No matter how outgoing they are.

I'll join your group hug, I do that kind of stuff for, well I don't really make any sort of living, but I do get paid to do stuff like that so I'm comfortable in group hugs with people I don't know very well.

Very interesting post Derek. By reading all the repiles, you can tell alot about this groups dynamic. I've never been interested in forums just because of all the D-Bags involved.

From day one the Beckerheads welcomed me to BF with open arms and free advice that didn't make me feel like an idiot. So I hung around a little while. I've learned an awful lot about knives, had some good laughs, and love to pop in and see whats going on with everybody.

My first post was filled with ignorance. Instead of berrating me and making me feel stupid, the group took the time to answer my ignorrant question and offered good solid advise. Long story short... if the group hadn't treated me as well as they had, I would have never came back...period. But instead I've hung around, enjoyed good company, and I'm proud to call myself a Beckerhead.

Thanks for the post Derek. Hopefully this will serve as a reminder for the knives we carried before we found BK&T. That we weren't stupid, just a little ignorrant and perhaps misguided. And with a liitle bit of humor and good advice, the BK&T forum will continue to inform the uninformed in a welcoming manner. That's just one of the things that makes this place what it is.
