Expensive Knives - Do you use them?

Well I guess since most of the time my knives see light use (cutting tape, paper, boxes, cable ties... household suburban tasks... ect.), I just opt for my cheaper knives because the perform the same as my more expensive knives. My collection isn't tucked away in boxes though, it's eye candy for anyone to see, and I do alternate EDCs frequently. But an edge is an edge. I know there is WAY more to a knife than that, but when it comes down to getting the task done that is what matters. For me they have to be sleek, easy to use, tough, well made/designed, practical, and good looking.
I'll try to expand my use among more of my knives. Once it gets that first blemish or knick then it's much easier to use again, lol!

I use all of my knives, though I do not own a single knife worth over $200. That's not because I think anything more expensive is too costly to use, it's because that's what I budget based on my pay and my families needs and wants. I'm sure that when the kids move out of the house, or I start making more money, I'll be enjoying the use of some more expensive blades.

I was also a student for the past 7 years. In short, any knife is expensive but it great to carry a 80 doller knife for some time and saving up for those more expensive pieces. Took me more then 3 years to save up for my first Sebenza....my motto is if I buy it, I use it. That's how I get my moneys worth.

If I had any expensive knives I would use them. I guess I'm just not a collector.

Good poll question - Do you use your pretty handled knives?
I use my 'field' knife 2 or 3 times/month. A BRKT Aurora w/ Elder Burl scales. Looks too pretty to use, but used it is.

Another word for patina is character.

i'm a lefty ,my most expensive forlder is a lfty umfaan and a mt nemesis3 i never use them, because i just regard them as steel toys ,edc is a lefty heavy duty forder named "eagle eye" in my local the rule bans u carrying a knife

I have three Sebenzas that I EDC more than any other knives I own. I'm about ready to pull the trigger on a large Insingo simply because I really like my small version with that blade style. So for me they are worth the money and that is because I use them on a daily basis. They seem to look better over time as they develop use marks and scratches.

I carry a large annual inlay sebenza with me every day. It can always go back for a spa treatment if needed, and that is part of the appeal of CR knives.

You ain't lying', brother! I know this isn't a knife, but I think it illustrates the point perfectly. This is my EDC lighter, a Zippo Armor Brass with Thunderbird butane insert. Note: this is the mirror polish version. Let those scratches and blemishes develop! As long as it's not rust, it adds character. :D

i just bought a small micarta damascus sebenza ($600) and I plan to carry and use it. Why buy a knife if you cant appreciate it by using it. Jmo

All my knives get used......

some very rarely, no such thing as drawer queens in my house.

I beat the piss out of my expensive knives. I do have a couple safe queens though :o, but more of them see regular use which some would consider abuse

As for the folders, I use them, but I'm generally easier on them. I don't baton with them, but they do see some chopping action every now and then :D

I love beating on my knives, especially with people around watching because most don't know what a good knife can do. They say I'm going to break it or mangle the edge, and all I can do is smile and wailing away :D

Some knives are pretty safe queens, but others look fantastic with battle scars

I have a William Henry Limited Ironwood Gen Tac in my pocket right now, and it gets used for most any EDC task. I won't take it out in the yard or when helping build my parents' house, but it does quite a bit. It gets rotated with knives ranging from $20-300 for some of my other EDCs, like a Microtech LCC D/a or Scarab, or a Kershaw Ti Tyrade, or a Protech Godfather, as well as a few cheaper knives. I guess my daily average would be about $200 worth of knives, when all things are considered.

My yearly knife budget is about $500. If I save it up, I can get something really nice, or I can spend it throughout the year and have a few decent production knives. Yes, I have lost a couple knives, one quite expensive, but there's always next year, and I don't plan on changing my ways. I love carrying and using knives, and have no safe queens. Having so many to rotate through, they don't all get an excessive amount of wear, so should last me more than my lifetime, and will continue to provide generations of usefullness.

For some reason the folder I am most comfortable using is my CRK Umnumzaan. I'm just not afraid use it on anything. Cut a bunch of rubber pieces out of a car the other day.

I own more than 200 knives according to the last count. So I do not make any effort to use all of them, or rotate them somehow. I just enjoy buying good knives and do not like selling them.
I also fail to feel any difference about using very expensive or reasonable cheap knives. Even in terms of getting and holding very sharp edge - I just do not have any problem sharpening any of my knives.
So at the moment I carry Spyderco Stretch regular. Another knives which see lots of pocket time are Endura and Griptilian. They would probably be some of the cheapest knives in my collection.
And yes, I use (not carry) Buck Vintage and CRKT Hammond Cruiser for some heavy applications - mostly because I do not like neither and do not care.

I think I just lack imagination. Can not come up with any idea how I would benefit from using any expensive knives.

For me, a poor college student (lol), any knife greater than about $80 bucks is considered expensive. My EDCs are usually sleek folders, the Kershaw Leeks being my favorite. I have 4 of them, yet I never really use or carry my rainbow or Damascus leek. I've also got a couple of expensive balisongs too that I like to flip but it's very rare I'll ever use them for anything heavier than cutting tape. So of all my knives I probably only use about 20% of them. My girlfriend likes to give me crap about buying more knives for that reason, haha. Of course some rare production knives or customs are more art than knife but where is the cut off for you? What is the most expensive knife you have that you'll use to the point of needing resharpening?

As a college student, you probably have a laptop, a bike, car, maybe a guitar or other musical instrument, etc. You use those don't you?

Yeah I like to use my expensive knives. Life is too short to carry a crappy knife, if you can afford other wise.

I predominately carry:
Emerson CQC-6
DDC & MSC Strider SnG (both of mine get carried and used)
Hinderer XM-18

I use every knife, shoot every gun and drive every car I own or have owned. Operative term being "use" have I ever abused them? No.
Anything I have ever used and sold was not devalued after I got done with it.
Shoot my Hk's and some of those are $10k or more. Kept in safes but not left in safes.
Booyah, have fun or leave the party I say.

I don't really own any knives that I consider "expensive" (i.e. $300+), because I don't want to own anything that I would hesitate to put into heavy use. I am not afraid to use the knives that I have paid the most money for. However, I am afraid of using some of my knives that I cannot replace. I have a cheap Boker (~$40) and I don't use it much because I like it and it has been discontinued :) I don't use my oldest Benchmade much (~$100), only becuase it has sentimental value and I have replaceable knives that I can beat on. I do carry it occasionally, but I don't want to use it for "hard" use.

The knife that I have paid the most for in my life, the Spyderco Caly 3.5 Super Blue, is in my pocket now, and it has a heavy patina.
