F ball bearings! OK, maybe not so much now, opinion changing

In my opinion everyone is entitled to their opinion(s). Even those who design and make products.

The market place, over time, will tend to "police up" the poor choices. In the meanwhile, buy what you like.

Ahhhhhhh....your learning a valuable lesson about this forum Daniel Son, there are certain trigger words that set some off
into an emotional tantrum defending there purchases until you either cave, concede or bow to there post count as a measure
of intellect and wisdom of all things cutlery.
Its all rainbows and unicorns here. Having anything negative to say is greatly frowned
upon, no matter how true, no matter the proof, and your education null and void.
One does not simply come here and mutter the words... Bearing knives S^%$@!,
Microtech OTF's are unreliable,
This China produced knife is great! or "Hey look at my new Strider" without dire consequence and ridicule.

I generally do not like them and prefer washers. In fact one of the smoothest knives I have ever owned is my Emerson CQC-8. ....But I do like the bearing feature in my ZT 0909.

They make it smooth and fun to open... if you for some reason you find yourself using a folder so hard the bearings in the pivot break or fail, sounds like you need a fixed blade

How can someone have such a strong aversion towards something they have absolutely no experience with??? Then start a thread with a very provocative title, knowing the reaction.
Sounds a bit ignorant to me.
Every knife you've mentioned sells extremely well. There has to be some reason they do.
Suck it up and give one a chance. I'd bet you change your tune.
Joe

He might but there is a reason why they sell like hot cakes everywhere
Just got mine yesterday...luuuuviiiittt.

Dumest idea sense snake mittens.....

They rust....but the census here will call it........ "Self oxidizing lubrication" ummm sure until theirs nothing but powder and a Teflon cage left.... ooooh...Teflon washers smooth!...
Hard ball bearings on softer titanium will gall/dent.... but the census here will call it........"work hardening" SMH...

How much use produced the brinnelling in those photographs?

I am wondering if a knife can still operate reasonably when you swap caged bearings to PB washers. Has anyone tried?

Hey Miso!
I know a few people tried this with the Spydie Advocate, but sizing is critical and they're finding it's not as easy as it looks.
Sounds interesting and I'm curious if anyone can get them sized correctly. I'd love to hear how different the action would feel.
Joe

Go SpySmasher, you wrote almost exactly what i was thinkin, but please,no insults for this tender soul!

^ joke aside, you dont really need to have ball bearings to make action glass smooth. The 3 knives above are great examples.

For flippers, the key to great flipping action is not the ball bearings, it's the detent. Look at the Hogue X5, no bearing, they dont even have washers, but they flip great because of the special detent system. Somebody finally got the right idea.

I'm in the field everyday and it's dirty, muddy, dusty etc. I have never once had an issue with my bb knives. If I was concerned at all about an issue like this I would only carry fixed blades.

Hi Joe,

I thought of Advocate precisely. I am sure that you need a couple of pretty thick washers as replacements.
But it would be nice to have them as backup. I should try it for my Southard Tolk at some point myself.

Miso

The problems with the Spyderco Advocate is evidence that bearings are a bad idea.

The smoothest knives I own are Hogues, which do not have bearings or washers.
