Morning. Big; Daniel; rest of the gang -

Funny I had someone yesterday ask me if I just got out of the hospital. I was like WTF?! Thanx, you look great , too! That's what I was thinking, but upon seeing my confused look, they quickly followed up with, "oh I saw the bald spot on your arm and I thought you may have had an IV." I look down to my left arm and there are the stray hairs growng back after I test my knives for sharpness! I just kind of chuckled and told them it was a shaving accident and got a confused look back, but I left it at that and said have a nice day.

I used to get that too, mostly from my wife complaining my arm looked like a had some sort of disease!! "You have to stop doing that, it looks weird!" Other people would look, but only a few would comment or ask. Mostly in the fall during hunting season(imagine that!!). Now I test my knives on my upper thigh, with the length of shorts these days nobody sees the bald spots.

Way to leave em hangin fast14riot!!

Now you guys know why you don't see me on videos, all the stray shaved hair is pretty weird! I got carried away with a small sword and shaved a line all the way down my calf the other day, it did it in one swipe. That was cool for about two seconds! :D

Knifemaker tip for the day - Never, never, ever slam your finger into a brand new 40 grit belt running at full speed. Just saying...

Haha, that's a racing stripe down your leg!

Here's one that got me the other day, brand new 36# paper on the disc, the edge of the paper was hanging over just a touch. That might as well be a deli meat slicer!

Oh,and I still believe all the other stoies in that other thread here about why you're not in any videos...

-Xander

one thing I have noticed in watching knife makers videos is they all have f'ed up hands .I am making a mix tape for you Daniel,it is a motivational knife making mix haha. I have a question for you daniel , what is the best way to make a bicycle spoke stiff /springy enough to use as a wire type pocket clip?

A racing stripe looks funny on a sasquatch, I guess it would on you guys too.

I bet that disk sander really got you, I have a flat lap that I used to run all day and it would eat my fingers down. At 50,000 grit it will polish your hands, lol.

I keep meaning to try that flat lap machine on some knives, it might be nice. It is water cooled.

Yeah I cut myself way less than when I started but the grinder still gets me. I live in constant fear of the buffer, lol! Actually I try not to use it. Last year I nearly had to go to the hospital and probably would have if anyone but me was home. I was buffing and stuck a tanto into my hand, it was pretty bad.

Mix tape, killer! :D really cool

On the spoke, I bet Xander knows what it is made of and how to temper or heat treat it accordingly. I'm guessing they could be carbon steel but really don't know.

I forget, are spokes springy on their own? If so you may need to soften it, bend it, harden it then you will be good. If it isn't springy you may be better off buying some music wire at the local hardware store, it is probably something like 1080 steel. You can bend and finish it then harden and temper to a spring temper, I bet 450-500F for the temper would do the trick.

If I know what steel it is I can tell you exactly what to do.

Look what happened to me the other day! Just being a sasquatch is dangerous!

ROFLMAO!!!

I can just see you beeing jumped by all th crazy trust fund babies up your way as you try to get into your shop!

Spokes, right, Kevin - now you know better. Wheelsmith and DT spokes are stainless, and I believe they are a 300 series like 303/304 but could be something like 316L which I believe is a martinsitic stainless. Piano wire and hobby wire I have found to be a W1 or W2 or 1095 type steel. Usually with a light spring temper. It all forged really well for minis and hardens up beautifully with just a plumbers torch. Hey your wife wouldn't miss a note or two from the piano, would she? Who ever really uses the second highest key anyways?

-Xander

Oh, and Daniel, spokes are usually pretty soft because the threads are rolled, not cut.

That makes sense, once again why I always recommend known steel. Ti is awesome for clips too.

For knives 1084 is so good and inexpensive I recommend it to anyone regardless of ability. I really think it is good stuff! The grain is so fine, it gets crazy sharp.

I'm going to work with a piece of M4 soon, I got the piece in Monday. I hear it has the finest grain of any steel.

OK back to grinding choppers, 6 of 7 are close!

thanks guys. I thought I would try to see if spokes would work .I have prob' 3000 or more spokes laying around the house.oh well, on to seeing what other bicycle stuff I can turn into knife stuff. Is it wrong of me to seriously giving thought to cutting up the piano to make knife scales and pocket clips ? I mean I am already selling the wifes car to buy fairly knives.

Umm.....maybe we're not the best people to ask about the morality of "modifying" musical instruments into knife parts.

Hmmm... :D just send me the car and w'll work something out! Heck for a car I might send you a box of handle materials!

What kind of car is it? Color? Mileage? I have to know how many knives to send.

Not sure what you're talking about Wilson? We're all responsible adults here... I swear!

I'm going to get back to what I was doing earlier, torching the entrance to my canyon with a oxy acetylene torch. The cattle guard is made from railroad tracks, they could be blade steel! I don't leave much anyways...

Daniel! I had no idea you were set up here! Good stuff man!
Rolf

Hey Rolf, great to see you here! Swing by anytime, it would be great to have you around here! :D

Morning all. Hey Daniel, you're up early. Well time to go to work. :grumpy:

Just think, you have three knives on the way!!!

They just went out yesterday afternoon so I haven't had a chance to tell you, I was grinding until I was about to fall out. :D

Morning men. Supposed to have the day off, but nope, gotta cover a shift. I was hoping to go mountain biking today, oh well.

Daniel, I'm getting sme crazy ideas about what to do with that tanto, I can't wait!

Best of luck with that! The money always helps. :)

I can't wait for your tanto ideas!

If I had a week to spend on one tanto I'd consider adding a wooden tang extension (whatever they are called, like on swords) then a wooden handle and saya for a one piece look when sheathed. I think this would work, not even sure.

Morning men.got up and had some running to do. Sounds like everyone is doing good.Should be soon and my chopper will be ready!Wooohooo!!!!
