aaaaaaahhhh the woods, that sounds so nice! well at least I have the day off so I can play with knives. I am starting a kiridashi (my first one) wish me luck.I will post pix along the way.have a great day everyone.good hunting to you bigcountry.

Found a great place to hunt.Lots of natural trails criss cross all through the area. When we got back we went shooting.I sighted in my Weatherby 300 mag and my 308. Get real good groups out to 300 yards. That is as far as the range has to shoot. Then got home and had to clean them. Now time for some beer brauts and fries!enjoy the rest of your evening men!

daniel, that Mickey Hart dub stuff is great.. can't believe I've missed that.. but typically anything Dead related I've avoided like the plague.. don't get me wrong, I love some reggae, dub style, dance hall even, on and on.. just not GRATEFUL DEAD< blah.. or Phish. Anyway, thanks!

edit: hmmm maybe its the Richie Hawtin I need to look into seeing as it was his remix.. either way, great track!

It was pretty good wasn't it! I have mixed feelings about the Grateful Dead, they have some great moments and some stuff I can't stand, same with Zappa. I own a lot of both though, lol it drives my wife nuts! Reminds me of fun times in college... of course so does DJ Shadow but he always kicks butt! I'm checking some Deadmau5 right now, I'm liking what I hear...

I am in the shop, grinding, lol! 9pm and I'm about to chop up some Damascus! :D

Oh yeah this is funny... bumper sticker I saw once.

Jerry's Dead, Phish Sucks, Get a Job

lol I may listen to Terrapin Station next, a set from 1972

Bigcountry, that sounds great! I also like your choice of rifles! My favorite rifle is a 300 Wby Mag. How do you have yours set up?

Nice, I hope it went well! Kiridashis look simple but the grind is tough to get right.

Sounds nice! I should get a hunting license, nearly free food! Sounds like a great day!

I hope you had a good one too!

I worked on the choppers all day and then got 4 knives profiled after 8pm! The choppers are looking nice, I profiled 2 bullseye damascus tantos and 2 52100 steel "Havok V's" a Gooeytek design! As usual one of each is for an order and one of each will be for sale.

I'm going to color the damascus on the tanto I will put up for sale, I have an idea that I think is going to look awesome!

Daniel, just wanted to stop by to leave a heartfelt thank-you to Sara & yourself for the good thoughts & prayers for Sally T. on BA & Chris's forum. She is doing better, the fatigue is a constant downer, but she is getting her appetite back and is starting to get a little more "up and about". But the best news is still no sign of cancer cells on any of her recent blood tests . . .
Thanks again, be sure and give Sara our best as well.
Be safe.

Good Morning All!

Daniel, you live in outdoors heaven! I think of moving to CO some day.

Happy Sunday! Be good!

I would have to agree! I always said that if I couldn't live near an arm of the sea or coastal, it would have to be the high Sierra's or the Four Corners. My dad has always wanted to retire to the Colorado four corners wilderness (likely the other side of Durango from you Daniel) and I think it would suit him and my mother very well.

He's coming up on retirement in the next few years, so if the real estate market ever comes back to normal levels and he can get a decent amount for the house I'm willing to bet he will look into it very seriously! I might just have an excuse to come out and visit then Daniel!

Xander, now is seriously a great time to check out the area. The weather is great and the real estate market has crashed!

Three years ago you couldn't find a Mobile Home on 2 acres for under $300,000. A few months ago a house sold down the road for $89,000, at the time I bought my place they were asking $330,000 that house.

The laws here are in favor of retirees as far as taxes etcetera go, there is a ton to do as well. 50 miles north we get 30' (lol that's feet!) a year snow and 5 miles south they get almost none.

It is way cheaper across the board compared to California here as well, my relatives stock up on food when they are here. My parents from Texas bring food, they can't believe our high prices, lol! I keep thinking if I worked for others I would make my money in Cali then move to TX where it is worth twice as much.

Morning men.Shaymanx I have a Weatherby Mark V Accumark in 300 Winchester Magnum. I just put a bushnell Trophyl XLT bone collector scope on it. Nice clear scope. This winter I switched around a lot of different and new scopes on all of my rifles. All I have left to sight in is my Remington 700 in 7mm Mag and my Thompson Center muzzle loader. I am one of those people that are anal about having all of my guns to shoot sub MOA or I am mad and will switch around scopes or loads till I get the sub MOA groups that I want. That Weatherby I have killed 7 caribou with it from ranges of 80 to 419 yards. All 1 shot kills. Not one of them ever took another step when i shot them.

Nice! It sounds like we have some similar standards!

I have the Mark V Accumark in 300 Weatherby Magnum. I bought it to retire the 1968 German 300 Weatherby Magnum that I inherited from my father. The German one shoots 1/2 to 3/4 MOA. My trips to the range always consisted of 3 shots and done. The Accumark is also sub-MOA. Between the two, I've taken muleys and a moose (Newfoundland). The moose was a heart shot at 120 yds.

I also have a 257 Accumark and a 240 Accumark for deer. The 257 is dead consistent sub-MOA as well. The 240 is making me a little crazy because I haven't gotten it sub-MOA consistent yet. I bought it used, like each of the others except the one from my dad, and it is the only one that wasn't killer accurate from the start. I did take a deer with it last year with a solid hit on the first shot, but not down and dead. That will bug me forever. :grumpy:

One of my favorite things about the Weatherby's is that I can set them up and sight them all in using factory ammo and have almost exactly the same ballistics. I don't reload because I get great consistency with the factory ammo (and I have no time or equipment to reload anyway). It means I don't have to think about which one I'm shooting.

I'm a Leupold fan. Mostly the old Vari-X II, but now the VX-II's and last year I put a VX-III on the 257 Accumark.

Although I'm not much this way about other things, I always google and print out pictures and mark vitals from every angle before a hunt. Then I study the pictures to the point of also not having to think too much in the field. :D

BTW, that bit of fanaticism about quality is what has me hanging out and buying Daniel's knives, too.

I'll have to talk to you when I get a rifle.

Very impressive about the Caribou. 419 yards is just nuts!

One summer I shot about 200 rounds a day learning to shoot, it was a lot of fun. Free ammo!

I don't even have a gun at my place now, I really should. If a bear gets in the house I'll have to get samurai on it! Lol that or run!

Daniel where you live a 7 mag or 300 mag would be perfect for deer and elk and bear!
Shayman X yes we do have the same type of standards for accuracy. I was a master firearms trainer for my department for about 15 years.I love rifles but stopped hunting deer with them for almost 20 years. I strictly bow hunt for deer and always have filled my tags. Now that I am retired I want to start still hunting for big bucks with my 454 Casull handgun. I love shooting that at 75 yards with 300 grain Hornady XTP's. You are correct about Weatherby's once sighted in it is 3 shots and done.I would like to own more of them but I have 2 safes full of guns and unless I go on a paid hunt I don't hunt with them.My other passion is big bowies like Daniel is making me!

Well you guys have fun with the magnums. I'm a big fan of the good ol' American standard .30-06! My next project gun is going to be a LR mauser based .257Bob AI. Everything I have read on the ballistics of that round makes it the best cartridge to go improved on. The gains are worth it, and Ackley shot it himself always proclaiming it as his favorite, too. I do love my 6mm Remington though, but I also have a .243 which pretty much is a clone ballistically.

I do reload and once I find an optimal round for the gun I only load those. I write my own ballistics cards for each round and gun too, I hunt a lot of hill country and having all the numbers to account for wind, angle, drop, and anything else you can think of makes sub MOA very consistant. Both my dad and I are in the 1000 yard club with confirmed kills on coyotes. Kinda a crap shoot with non magnum cartridges at that range though. I'll call it luck any day over flat out skill.

Happy hunting Big!

Shaymanx just in case you did not know it the 257 Weatherby mag was Roy Weatherby's personal favorite round for deer hunting.

I read that it was his favorite and that's what got me looking for one. It is PERFECT for deer sized animals. The 300 is good for muleys, but a bit much for whitetails. I think anyone who shoots a 257 will find that it will become their favorite. It did that to me.

As the company's saying goes, "nothing shoots flatter, hits harder or is more accurate" than a Weatherby. :)

1000 yard club. Nice! I haven't ever shot anything past 250 or 275. But then, I may be a little conservative about that because I want those one-shot kills and would most likely pass on those longer, riskier shots. I'm definitely in it for the groceries, and not wall hangers, so that works against me too. :-p

I take the Weatherby ballistic info with me in the field too. Just in case that longer shot presents itself sometime.

The .30-06 is a great cartridge (and available EVERYWHERE!). I also like the .270 and .243 and .308. I still have my first rifle, which is a Winchester 670 in .30-06. I've been thinking about buying a rifle that shoots common (think less expensive) ammo. Although, a box of 20 Weatherby rounds easily lasts 3 to 4 years because I don't have to burn much sighting in every year, so even expensive boxes last a long time. :-)

Those Ackley Improved rounds are amazing, but I don't have the gear or the time to pursue something like that.

454 Casull. Man, what a brute that is! I've thought of setting up a handgun for deer, but I've never been quite sure what cartridge to pick for the whitetails where I hunt.

A couple of safes full of guns. I'm halfway there, about 50-50 with rifles and shotguns. :-) I got the Weatherby bug pretty young and have pretty much made myself wait until I could afford the next one before buying anything.
