Big, I'm not saying all synthetic stocks need the forearm stiffened, but it can be a way to get a stock shape you like to perform the way they should. Houge stocks were kinda known for it, unfortunately.

The .22 I redid is a remington 582 bolt action tube mag. Its a baby 788 in design and apearance. I redid the original stock, its mahogony, jeweled the forward bolt body, and am getting ready to add a second action screw then bed the action block (like a recoil lug but removable). I also have 3 10/22's a springfiled single shot, ruger single six, two ruger mark II target models (slab side barrels) and I know I'm forgetting a few. Remembering three safes full can be tough on the old grey matter!

Try to buy a complete action with the safety already converted and the proper bolt face, its cheaper in the long run, then choose the barrel taper and length. Get some go/no go guages for setting headspace and your all set.

Daniel I will be looking forward to the sheath photos.Xander thanks for the tips.I thought I was doing good with 2 safes full! Now I need to fill a 3rd one.Every since you mentioned your 460 I have been looking at the BFR 460.I want one with a 7 1/2 inch barrel. The guy at the last gun show I went to was selling holsters that his son made.He had his BFR in 45/70 with a 10 inch barrel and open sights. He said he shot a buck at 125 yards with it facing him.He said the bullet went clean through the deer.I have a thing with not wanting a barrel longer than 8 3/8.That is what was on my old Smith & Wesson model 29 44 magnum.

The .460 really benefits from the 10" barrel, makes you really able to reach out and touch something! 45/70 I think would suit the 7.5" much better. I would believe a 45/70 can do that, tons of energy in those things. S&W 29 is awesome, I have a S&W Secuity Six in 41mag with the 8 3/8" barrel, that's probably one of my favorites. Ah hell, who am I kidding, they're all my favorites! I have Leupold glass on almost all my handguns, I've been blessed with having to wear glasses since third grade. But my go to open sight gun is my Belgium made Browning FN High Power. I think I'm going to put new grips on it soon, the ivory ones I have are a tad to thick for my liking. Maybe I'll have some fossil mammoth bark grips made, the blue toned ones would be amazing on it!

Daniel, you have really goten me to like bigger blades now. I've never really been fond of anything bigger than 5" blade except in the kitchen, but now you got me wanting to build a chopper! I would buy one from you, but finances are little tight. Opinions on a decent steel at a great price? Other than 1084 or 5160?

-Xander

Xander - decent steel for a chopper, great price, not 5160 or 1084...

Aldo's 1075 - needs fast quench, awesome steel, comes pretty clean too
15n20 - I doubt you can find a thicker piece but it is great
1050 or 1060 if you can find it. 1050 water quenches almost risk free

There are a lot of good chopper steels out there, I'll try to think of some more...

Cool, thanx Daniel. I will need to send it out for HT anyways, so I guess how it quenches is not super important. Part of me wants to do one all from reclaimed materials, leaf spring blade, I have an old air rifle barrel that would make great pins, I also have some conveyor belt for scales.

But the other side of my brain says go for quality materials for performance. I know you are pretty serious about your testing and have used several different steels to find the best, so that's why I ask you, your opinion is very valuable for such things.

I'd go with 5160 or S7 from my experience, I have made enough from those two steels to know they are top notch.

I have had great luck with quite a few steels, even 1095 would work with the right temper.

Awesome posts today for sure... but some of us are waiting patiently for A2 Tanto photos ;)

I'm hoping for tomorrow! :D

Morning men. The wife is doing a yard sale today and tomorrow, I am so glad that I work both days! I do not want to deal with that hassel at all!

-Xander

Morning men! Xander yes you are lucky to be working.Yard sales are always a pain. You get people who try to barter on stuff that is dam near free already.Talking about handguns I have never had one with a scope. I have the same problem that you do with your eyes. I have worn glasses most of my life.

Yeah, iron sights is fun, but out here a 150yd shot on a buck is close and more common it will be out to 250-300. I also do a lot of varmint shooting and the foothills we hunt are wide rolling hills with steep grades and deep valleys. 250 is the norm for squirrels. Iron sights just don't offer the accuracy we need for our terrain.

When I shot PPC I shot a Ruger GP100 with iron sights and routinely placed on the podium, so I do have the skill to shoot open sights (well, did have the skill!) But now I have more of a need for scopes.

If you like your 10/22 check out RedMistMaker products offered by Heier custom guns. Chuck, the owner/craftsman of RedMistMaker products is my uncle and if you want to get some work done or parts from him, tell him Alex sent you (my real name, as I am sure most of you guessed) and he'll treat you right. He does fantastic work that can really hot rod a rifle. He does more than just 10/22's as well.

Xander, I should swing by your house and ask your wife "How much for this dusty old disk grinder and that worthless old hunk of burl ..I mean wood. hahha " ohhh yea and that white bicycle that is missing its brakes and gears ... 25 bucks for the lott I'll take it !!! hahahhaha.
If you are getting steel for a chopper I want to go in on it so I can make one . we could go chopping together, it would be fun.
Daniel the new Fairly Knives ad is great. I love the tip you put on that knife!

Haha, yeah, that white bicycle is missing a bunch of stuff, but it sure is schweeeettt! We gonna trade soon? I may just get some steel from Fastenall so I don't hav to pay shipping. I'm thinkin maybe go halves on a 6' bar? Enough for a couple of choppers each. We could go chopping at the mall, that would be great fun!

Or we can go bustcrafting on the levee, like we're 6 years old again, but with better knives!

Morning Daniel, late start today?!

-X

Yes, after spending all day on photos yesterday (259 pics!) I was restless and worked on computer aided drafting until late. I have had a busy day so far though, I just sharpened your tanto!

I have been considering making some knuckle dusters that I designed with CAD, not too sure about the whole brass knuckles thing. They look cool, I know that.

Thanks, I am trying to design some patches and that was something I came up while learning a program.

Chopping at the mall, too funny!

You get steel at Fastenal? Cool, there is one everywhere it seems. I called a local one and they had no blade steel but they can order it, I mean to go by and check the place out.
