Big, I'm not saying all synthetic stocks need the forearm stiffened, but it can be a way to get a stock shape you like to perform the way they should. Houge stocks were kinda known for it, unfortunately.
The .22 I redid is a remington 582 bolt action tube mag. Its a baby 788 in design and apearance. I redid the original stock, its mahogony, jeweled the forward bolt body, and am getting ready to add a second action screw then bed the action block (like a recoil lug but removable). I also have 3 10/22's a springfiled single shot, ruger single six, two ruger mark II target models (slab side barrels) and I know I'm forgetting a few. Remembering three safes full can be tough on the old grey matter!
Try to buy a complete action with the safety already converted and the proper bolt face, its cheaper in the long run, then choose the barrel taper and length. Get some go/no go guages for setting headspace and your all set.
