This is another young artist,this DFK, just like KFU...both are getting caught up in the old Supply & Demand thingy.

Not sure they can Supply 'em as fast as we're Demanding 'em!

Yeah! I'm on it 7 days a week! Lol KFU and I may even have to collaborate to get them all done! :D

For sure! I do some rough saw work but a bandsaw would save me a ton of time and would scratch my stock way less.
 
yeah I was sorting my cutoff pile the other day and need to figure out what to do with 3-5" long 2" tall pieces of 5160, I have a stack of them and little triangular bits too. The longer pieces will make some stout little neckers with tall blades... maybe hatchet heads too. If I get a band saw I can split the 2" tall pieces length ways then I have tons of options. Folder blades?

I got a package in the mail yesterday, 2 pieces of A2! One 18" length for a couple of spike sized tantos (9" long, .315" thick :eek: and 3/4" tall) and 1 piece for a 2.5" tall at the heel and 3/32" thick chefs knife. I'm either going for a 240 mm Gyuto or some other big style of chef's knife.

I'll be doing a cryo/sub zero treatment on the A2, it needs it in my opinion... the A2 is some cool stuff. The A stands for air hardening, steels that air harden are very stable during heat treat... A2 has exceptional toughness and wear resistance. You heat them to a bit hotter and longer than I am used to, the A2 takes around 1750F and has to be held at that temp for nearly half an hour, I'm glad I have a digitally controlled kiln! You can plate quench them, you place the knife between 2 aluminum plates to cool it. This ensures a very straight knife right out of heat treat, tough to do with a big piece of thin steel like the kitchen knife I will make.

I will make a smelter eventually! That is like my blacksmithing setup, I keep piecing it together when I come across the right materials. I have a couple of decent hammers, some railroad for an anvil, I just need to make a forge and some charcoal.

I haven't looked into it but I wonder if I could make some mosaic damascus in my kiln with the bits and powdered steel? I couldn't press it into a billet but talk about cool smaller stuff... guards, bolsters, little knives. I could make a mixed batch just for kicks with steel dust and scraps and a solid purpose made version with 52100 bearings/nickle powder or maybe 15n20 scraps and powdered 1084?
 
Let's think about this a minute.....need bandsaw to save time and cut down on scrap. Need a forge to make custom metels
and smaller pieces. Seems like we overlooked something.......OH I know.....a POWER HAMMER.
 
The cord wrapped neckers are getting closer, I'll have 2 or three ready soon!

I'm regretting scrapping my buddy's smelter, lol I could have bought it for the scrap price! It only did big stuff but it was wood powered, he told me pinion pine would melt anything. We scrapped a 4x6 1" thick steel plate that was the base of it, the 2 of us loaded it on a trailer, I think it was the heaviest thing I have ever moved!
 
Well....epoxy & black glow dust is really cool stuff....but it won't hold the Vishus Broo together,when the smelter gets hot.
 
Mix some TITANIUM & some 5160 & some A2 & a small block Chevy rocker arm,some S7 and some of Aldo's 1095, some underwire out of a large bra; add a Coors can for seasoning.

Bring to a low boil,stirring constantly with a piece of carbidized rebar.

Reduce heat to 1750*F,and cover with lid,stirring occasionally,for 72 hours or so.

Remove from heat when the Evil Sumbitch tells you it's coming out!
 
I have been quiet today... lots of work! I hope to heat treat some edc styles in 1084 fg steel (Aldo's good stuff!) tomorrow and then I'm off to Albuquerque on Tuesday/Wednesday .. looking for a better drill press and tools.
 
Damn, you have to go all the way to Albuquerque to find a drill press? That sucks.
Gonna look for a bandsaw, forge, and powerhammer too? LOL

I added this recipe to my heat treat notebook. Must try! The Coors can for seasoning will really do the trick I can tell!

Lol no TV reception, no drills either! Actually they have some gear but it is tourist town prices around here. My local hardware store sells Buck 110's for $65!

I have a HF drill press and it came to me new and out of whack, I'm going to hopefully exchange or return it. I have been looking all summer for a used American made drill press but I can't find anything... the new ones are steep. :D

Drill press looks to be working fine:confused: HF has been hit or miss for me too. But they're only 5 minutes away now:D
 
It drills well but the whole thing is off, all my bits look warped but they are straight, it is messed up above the chuck. It works pretty well still but when it comes to precision work it is no good, I want to do more countersinking and it chatters like crazy.
