Evening gents! Had a good day off today, I managed to get into the shop!!! Even better is that I actually got something finished! I had dug out some of my straight razors I had planned on cleaning up and rehandling, found the most beat up, difficult one to fix and I am now proud to say it is ready to go! Its a W.R. Case & Sons straight that was in sad shape, chipped and broken blade, edge missing chunks, broken scale and some light rust and pitting.
What I started with...

And here is how it turned out...

So I now just need to polish up my brass balls and learn how to shave with this thing! Will likely be worse than when I first started shaving with DE razor, and that was bad!
Hey Tyson, welcome! I'm a traditional knife nut too. I had Daniel actually make me a custom version of a tradtional fixed blade, a rigging knife. Teak scales and all! Its a keeper. If your looking for inexpensive edc slip joints, head to your local flea market, estate sale, antique store and pick up old Hammer Brand, Imperial, Colonial, Western for a few bucks. Check sewing baskets, tackle boxes, tool chests for them. I carry a 1945 Hammer Brand sepentine jack that I found in the bilge of one of my race boats when I bought it in 1998!

Good morning everyone!
Tyson and Xander, I like the traditionals, too. One of these days I'll dig some out and post pics. I've got some interesting bird knives and fishing knives. And a bunch of toothpicks.
Nice work Xander. Morning everyone.
I'm hoping to get a cheap press to run a Tapmatic for making folders, I really hope to get one. They sound like the way to go for Ti especially.
Good morning! I'll likely send you that bit for turning, that would be awesome! Thanks! I'll pay you of course. I was surprised my monster drill press was not big enough for it!
I'm hoping to get a cheap press to run a Tapmatic for making folders, I really hope to get one. They sound like the way to go for Ti especially.
I hope it went well and you have a great day today!Morning men. Off to the dentist again. Had a filling fall out went had it put back in it fell out the next day.Had it replaced yesterday and by 1830 it fell out again.I called the dentist at home and now he wants to pull the tooth. so at 2 PM today we shall see.He is an outstanding dentist he is trying to correct mistakes that were made by another dentist.
Is your drill press not big enough for a Tapmatic?
I don't know very much about tapmatics but it is a huge drill press, I have heard that a cheap small press will run a tapmatic though... not really sure. I do need another drill press eventually, I get tired of switching bits so much. I haven't really even looked into tapmatics yet besides pricing them on ebay, I do know without one it is hard to make any money on folders... I hear tapping Ti is tough by hand. Let me know if you have any thoughts on this.
This is all stuff I hope to get, currently all my budget is going to belts!
I have so many projects in the works it isn't even funny.![]()
Send that puppy my way, just let me know what size you need it to be. Don't worry about payment, just do something completly "Fairlyrific" with that Old Timer Sharp Finger.![]()
Will do! Thanks!
That Sharp Finger is so cool I saw one the other day and wanted to buy it too, lol. I consider doing some Anso style scales on it with the original scales, the two tone look is cool. I have a feeling it could be 1084, my favorite high carbon steel hands down. I need to put a polished edge on it or something just for fun.
Good morning sasquaches! Got th day of today, hopefully I can get in the shop again.

Good morning Xander! lmao!![]()
Enjoy the day off! That razor you restored is just too cool, I keep looking at the pics!
I have one in just about the same original shape I need to restore (you saw the 2 I bought), that would be cool. I want to use some buffalo horn on a knife but am not too sure about selling one (worry about cracking down the road) but it sure would be cool for a keeper.
I have some random 15n20 knives profiled out, a Gyuto (chefs knife), a Murray Carter inspired necker, a small kiridashi and a small sheepsfoot style kitchen knife... not sure what it would be called but it looks good for smaller stuff. They are all only .049" thick... or should I say thin.Wish me luck on the quench! I am going through all my older random stock and using it up. If I make machetes they could be 15n20, it is excellent steel but hard to find in thick sizes.
I have been doing all sorts of profiling, I am actually out of new 80 belts so I have not done any bevel grinding for a few days... I burned through way more than expected on the Ti B.O.K.'s. but have more on the way at the moment. 30 plus and a new very fine scotchbrite belt, I literally wore my old one out.
You guys need belts, call Pops at Pops Knife Supply. He is the way to go for belts, I order almost all of them from him now.
Thanx Daniel, and everyone for the kind words! I just finished resetting the edge and stropping/lapping to bring it up to shave ready. It cuts a free hanging hair with effortless swipes and I managed to fillet 4 slices off the hair in the same spot! This brings my sharpening skills up to a whole new level, I used the most basic supplies to do this as well, newspaper, plain untreated leather, 1200 and 2000 grit paper and a litte CrOx (green polishing compound) on denim. All stropping was done as a paddle strop or bench strop using my precision surfaced India stone as a backer. Granite or marble tile works well too. I took some better pics of it in natural light too...
Daniel, I love fixing old razors and if you ever just want yours done send 'em my way. Horn has been used fo a long time and it moves a ton! Usually some neatsfoot oils is all that's needed to keep it from cracking, I think Mark Knapp had a post with info about using horn handle materials a while back.

That is one killer razor Xander!! WOW! I might have to start looking for them at flea markets, don't be surprised if I end up sending one your way. I'd be a just a little nervous using one of those too!
Oh yeah, evening all.
Evening men.Not been on here as much as I like.Seems like I have an appointment everyday. Makes for exhausting days.Hope you all had a great one!!
Morning men. I got some shop time yesterday, started a kamisori from scratch. Hand sanding stage right now before HT.
-Xander
Yeah the kamisori are pretty damn cool! I just couldn't justify the price of a new one though! I started a WIP in shop talk yesterday...
