Hey FBC! I hope you are doing great as well!


7pm here, I am going to bed soon! I have been up since 3 am, this last week it has been like that almost daily, my daughter has been up at night and so have I. I took the day off... too tired to use power tools. It has been a tough week sleep-wise.

Morning y'all. Got Tool, opium album blasting on the turntable this morning. Its motivational I guess!

Daniel, you may want to try some loud music to help sooth Jade to sleep. My son still has a hard time if its too quiet in the house! Good luck!

Morning men. Xander we kept it pretty loud with all 3 of our kids and they all have to have noise to sleep and their adults now. My son is a heavy metal to the max.It is never too hard.Slip Knot is mild for him.I am glad he is moving to his own house on Wednesday.He bought the house right next door.It will be nice when they have grandkids!!!!

I'd like to say I was but it has been tough lately, Jade is full of energy! She is only 5 months and can already crawl, lots of work to do! :D I have hurt myself the last 3 of 4 times I have ground, too tired. Today was an exception! I got lost done and did not grind myself, lol! I can usually go for a long time without slipping up, being tired is a huge factor. I'm not even going to use the bandsaw this week!

I sent you the chamfer bit, thanks for helping me out.

That album rocks! I love Tool. Jade is just getting up early, 3 am at times. She is only up for a bit but I am usually up for good at that hour. We listened to Cradle of Filth on the way home from the hospital, lmao!!!! That will break anyone in fast! :D

I'll be on the lookout for it. I'll get it back to you ASAP. I already talked to the guy that does all the manual machine work. He said he could do it or make sure a lathe was free so I could turn it down for you.

Hey Thanks!

No hurry, I actually hand chamfered all 18 of those CC Knives! I was getting so much chatter I ruined the first one I tried to chamfer. It took me all day to do a 15 minute operation but they look good!

Thanks for checking everything, I still think I can use that one if turned down. I need a 1-2-3 block to keep everything dead square I think. Much appreciated!

Knifemaking... huge learning curve! I think it was Delbert Ealy that told me the second thousand go easier than the first.

Morning guys. Got a long day today, and working a 6 day stretch too. Hopefully I can get a few hours in the shop the next couple days before work to get that Kamisori finalized for HT. Just a bit more sanding to get the last of the deep scratches out and finalizing the shape. This one I think I will actually stamp my name on. Then I will start on the second one. Its amazing to me how much you can learn from one knife (or razor) to the next, I will do things very different on the next one, I'm going to make a sen to do the Ura side so I can get a true 12" hollow.

Ohh that is just too cool! I have considered making a sen to try a fuller in a katana, I hear they work the best on tamahagane but will be fine on just about anything. I looked into it a bit and it would be a cool project, I have also seen mill tooling used in the same way by hand... carbide cutters, I forget the term for them. I bet wrought iron San Mai would be nice to work with a sen, lol after tons of hard work making the San Mai.

Congratulations on making the move for a stamp, that is great to hear!

You do learn a ton on each knife, I have very different ideas about things than when I first got into knifemaking. Every knife is still a challenge as I try to make every one better than the last.





I always like to talk about Japanese terminology, there are usually no real English words to translate the meaning

sen-metal scraper used to cut metal away as opposed to abrasively removing it

tamahagane - a very pure steel made by gathering black sand from river bottoms, it is refined over several days in a complicated and low yielding smelting process... the steel of choice for traditional Katanas. Great hamon potential, expect to pay $20,000 easily for a new sword made from this material!

san mai - I think this literally means 3 layers, often a hard core steel is clad with a softer steel outside... steel sandwich construction
 
BC I hope you didn't lose anything important on that hard drive! It seems they are always going out these days.

Xander I saw your thread on the hammer, it seems you find the cool knives and I find the cool hammers at the flea market. I have been collecting them for years, I have a 1-2oz Channel Lock ball peen that is old, lots of home made stuff too including a real blacksmiths hammer. I have considered doing a run of small smiths hammers but I don't know, lol I am a stock removal dude.

Check Aldo, he had some square 1080 stock that could be cool. Call him, he is a really great guy.


I am just worked today, I was at the KMG for a solid 8 hours. My shoulders hurt! lol... some days it doesn't bother me but today was tough! Lots of grinding flats, workout wise it is tougher than bevels. My new belts are in and I am going to use them up fast! lol :D I love it!
 
morning men. Got a new store opening in town today, a Hobby Lobby! There hasn't been a hobby store in town for atleast 5 years and the last one was pretty lame. It will be nice to go and pick up materials like brass and copper sheet for liners, pin stock, balsa for stropping, fine grade sandpapers, etc. I was a serious model builder for about 15 years (which is why I like the minis so much) and still enjoy it from time to time. I have a few hard to find Tamiya kits unbuilt still, a 94 Formula 1 ferarri brasilian team kit, and a 66' VW beetle kit (same as my actual VW). I hope to get one done this next year or so, lots of hours go into them!

Sweet! Just remember they are closed on Sundays, I have forgotten a few times. They have a small leather section, we get a lot of our supplies there. They have all sorts of tubing too, I want to buy a variety pack of end cuts they sell.

Cool on the Beetle, I had a '76 Super Beetle for a while. Lots of maintenance on that car but it was cool.

I have had a 1991 Toyota 4Runner for about 6 years now. It is slow but can go anywhere and gets 20 mpg.
 
Yeah I found out first hand why they are closed on sundays. I got there a couple minutes before the store opened and they did the ribbon cutting ceremony and all that, then this woman who apparently was in charge of things, came up to the front of the group and started off with, "we have a tradition here at Hobby Lobby, we open every store with a prayer..." then came the full-on evangelical preaching, pounding her fists, waving her arms to the heavans, stomping her feet, and other exclaimant motions! It was intense! She went on for about 3 minutes! I had never seen a company official so adamant about it, sure there are lots of faith backed companies and I have worked for some, but this made me step back and wonder if I was going to be struck by lightening or something when I walk in!

Turns out their lightening generator wasn't working today, I managed to get some 1/16" copper pin stock, a multi-pack of high grit paper (up to 12K grit!), a plank of balsa for a bench strop, and some art supplies. A really cool multi color penil fo drawing, by Koh-i-Nor if your into that sort of thing and more drawing books.

Morning, have a very productive day Daniel. I usually start work at 6AM, but today my wife's getting bloodwork done, and i'm home with my daughter until the Mrs. and I can tag out and then i'm off to work. Got another daughter on the way due Dec 1. I'll be a zombie until March I'm sure lol. Babies,,,sleep deprovation fo sho. Just wanted to check in. Later Daniel and fellas.
