Good morning everyone!

I was thinking about knowing your customer base...

What got me here was a relatively small knife (a fighter). What keeps me here is:
- the great people
- the up-close look at the art and science of knife making
- the beautiful, functional, works of art that Daniel creates
- the great service, and creating knives for people with their design input
- the anticipation of what's coming up next
- the variety
- the quality of the steel and other materials

Getting here in the first place, is key. Having many reasons to come back is also key.

I likely would have never gotten a chopper, but for a nudge from BigCountry. And then to see the BigCountry SWSK created...

When I got that first knife, I wasn't sure that I would like the chisel grind. The longer I've hung around here, the more it has grown on me. I'm now a fan, but for me it took some time.

I didn't know anything about friction folders, before I saw them here. Now I want one.

It makes sense that thicker spines and overall edge geometry are a great place to focus, but I like to see some experimentation, to discovery of additional things that appeal to the customer base as it evolves. Occasional slicers and lighter knives would appeal to me, as well as a folder or two, but that's me.

Great job Daniel! From where I sit, it sure looks like you have built a solid foundation for easing that financial stress and getting profitable.

Have a great day everyone!

Shaymanx - great information there! First of all that is really cool and makes my day but there is so much more! This really helps, a change of perspective is always great.

Thanks!

Good morning guys!

Hey guys! Been a few days since I checked in, been busy round here. Good news, the wife got a job! Its part time right now, but its union and I told her to take it because when the higher positions come available they always look internally first. Not so good news, I no longer have cable and internet at the house, the one bill my FIL had and he let it go, the worst part is its in the wifes and my name, grrr! Bad news, I got a nice letter from the IRS saying my 2010 taxes have been audited and a nice bill attached with the letter. Aaarrrggghhhhh!!!!

Anyways, I can still check in from my phone, and I realized I need to just to keep an even keel. Dealing with too many problems and not taking time to recenter yourself just makes it worse.

Morning all. Wow, I missed a few days checking in and had 3 pages to scan through!

I believe I belong in this thread! I love knives, but I'm an amateur when it comes to them. I started collecting them when my grandfather gave me an Old Timer 3OT. Ever since then(10 years ago) I've been into almost everything with a sharpened edge(including trouble). I don't have a huge collection, since I'm very picky about what I want but, what I do have I'm proud of. I'm also getting introduced to: Spyderco, GEC, Benchmade, and various other knife brands I wasn't very fond of before I joined this forum. I'm mostly into traditional knives, I'd say 90% of my interests are into traditional folders. I really like the styling of Spyderco & Benchmade's but most of them are too "futuristic" or "modernized" for my tastes. I'm hardcore into USA made brands, but I'm on a budget so I have few picks for my price range. Another problem I have is that when I spend all week looking at knives to order and I finally pick one, I'll recieve and then I'll never use it. I guess once I appreciate the beauty of the craftsmanship I'm scared to put it to work. Not only am I afraid to use it, I'm afraid to lose it. I've lost 4 Kershaws(Don't ask me how!) including a sv30 LEEK, Titanium coated Chive, Tanto Groove & a US made 3002 DWO II. With all that being said, I....*sigh* I've been looking at Rough Riders, for an EDC. I've heard mixed reviews on them, but I'm tired of losing beautiful American knives! I've ordered a yellow synthetic small Texas toothpick and a amber jigged single bladed Barlow. I'll let you know how they hold up! I don't like supporting the slave labor, sweat shops etc. etc, but I feel that I won't be afraid to put them to work and if I lose them, they'll be easily replaced both financially and sentimentally. My favorite knife maker is W.R. Case & Sons, I know they've cut some corners in production over the years but I still find that they make beautiful pieces of art. My favorite style is the Sod buster JR, that's really the only Case I'll EDC. I'll list a few of my favorites right now. 1985 5 dot Case 6254 Trapper, 2011 Case 6254 Trapper, Case XX 300 L, 1995 Case Sod buster JR, Schrade 881 Stock man, Schrade Uncle Henry 285UH, Buck 309 Companion, and a Western Cutlery 062 E. I know to a lot of you this is going to look like a subpar assortment of knives. The Schrade 881, Western 062 E, 285 Uncle Henry, and the 85 Case 6254 are all gifts that my best friend gave me after his grandfather passed away so they are all near and dear to my heart. I'm young and I've(hopefully) got a lot of years left in me, to add more to my collection. I'll try and get pictures of my knives soon. My name is Tyson, and I hope to make friends with all of you. Thanks.

That is good to hear about the job at least, I hope it goes great for her. I hear you on the taxes, CO lost my sales taxes and it has been a big pain. It is always great to go here and read about knives though, I agree!

Hi duuds!
Daniel is on a ROLL!

Hey Lycosa!

Morning all. Wow, I missed a few days checking in and had 3 pages to scan through!

Busy here! always good!

Evening gentlecreatures.

Woohoo, I had a great day on the lake. I took the day off from knifemaking and finally got my old boat into the water. The motor needs a few things done but it's all doing pretty well considering the boat is a '70 and the motor is a '68!

Xander, hang in there man, it'll work out!

Daniel, I need more updates about the wrought iron / W2 project! It's gonna be awesome, I can tell :D

Take care all!

Tyson, welcome! You've come to a great place!
Yes what great post! And good evening!

Hey Matt! That is awesome to hear about the boat, a '68 vintage outboard is not something you see too often. Nice! I have a small Aluminum boat and an older motor I really need to get going, it needs a bit of work but is not bad. I am big into boats and was planning on working on making a wooden boat this summer... maybe next year!

Wrought/W2... ummm... it was a very good lesson. I fit the guard very well, I probably got lucky but I expected it to take a few tries. I had about 15 hours into it when I started grinding the bevel, it turns out I might need to learn how to grind! Long story short yesterday was a huge letdown but I will order more W2 and start again, it was looking too cool. I figure I paid $60 to learn how to fit a guard, not too bad I guess. :D :D :D Next time will be a lot faster too, I have a better plan.

Hey Daniel, were you able to get the shank of your chamfer bit turned down to size?

Hey Daniel, were you able to get the shank of your chamfer bit turned down to size?

Not yet but I have another on the way. I want to get the one I have turned next time I make it to town for a backup if possible. I ordered one in HSS for under $45 shipped so that was a steal. lol I have undersized ones too. For some reason these things are hard to get! I expect it in some time, I got a notice the new one finally shipped out today.

CC Knives as soon as I get it! I can't wait, I am keeping one of those.

If you want, send me the one with the large shank and I'll turn it for you. Just tell me what size you need it. Yes, you should keep at least one. :D

Evening gents! Had a good day off today, I managed to get into the shop!!! Even better is that I actually got something finished! I had dug out some of my straight razors I had planned on cleaning up and rehandling, found the most beat up, difficult one to fix and I am now proud to say it is ready to go! Its a W.R. Case & Sons straight that was in sad shape, chipped and broken blade, edge missing chunks, broken scale and some light rust and pitting.

What I started with...

And here is how it turned out...

So I now just need to polish up my brass balls and learn how to shave with this thing! Will likely be worse than when I first started shaving with DE razor, and that was bad!

Hey Tyson, welcome! I'm a traditional knife nut too. I had Daniel actually make me a custom version of a tradtional fixed blade, a rigging knife. Teak scales and all! Its a keeper. If your looking for inexpensive edc slip joints, head to your local flea market, estate sale, antique store and pick up old Hammer Brand, Imperial, Colonial, Western for a few bucks. Check sewing baskets, tackle boxes, tool chests for them. I carry a 1945 Hammer Brand sepentine jack that I found in the bilge of one of my race boats when I bought it in 1998!

Good morning everyone!

Tyson and Xander, I like the traditionals, too. One of these days I'll dig some out and post pics. I've got some interesting bird knives and fishing knives. And a bunch of toothpicks.
