I think I will do a Bali, I want to make one in a bad way! I also need to buy a micrometer/pivot lap/reamers/1-2-3 blocks, etc for a folder and this is a good excuse to buy them and a great way to learn to use them.

What size mic you looking for? 0-1", 1-2", bigger? I was a metrologist and certified them all the time. I still run across used ones for not much money, good brands too. Fowler, Starrett, Mitotoyo, lufkin, brown and sharpe. Do you know how to read a vernier caliper, lol? Or how to hold one? I remember watching a Ph.D that was on a project fresh out of college, we were in my metrology lab, he was curious about my measurements and wanted to sample test with a mic. He couldn't figure out how to hold the part, the mic, and turn the dial with only two hands! These were small parts, 1cmx1cmx0.5mm and he dropped them a couple of times! Its not obvious on how to hold them for easy use, but this guy thought he was top dawg because of his degree! Too funny, all brains and no practical experiance.

If you want me to find you some good used ones, let me know.

Hey thanks!

Lol I think I need a 0-1" for what i am doing, measuring pivots and standoffs mostly.

I have pretty much no knowledge, not even how to hold one! I guess you just clamp it down, lol!

Let me know if you see anything, I would like to know what you think about the used opnes on ebay if you have a chance to look. One guy has old fowler ones for $8! I bet they are too trashed to use but I really wouldn't know.

I only know that Starret makes pretty good gear, we have a lot of pawn shops here and every one has a bunch of starret gear that I am unsure about. I think they must use them in the oil/gas industry as that is the main gig here.

My budget is pretty low but I don't want to waste my money, I saw one that advertised something like .001-3 accuracy, lol I can almost eye that!

Evening men.Well bought my daughter and her future husband a German Short Haired Pointer and loaned my future daughter in law the money so she could buy one for my son's birthday.

Sure thing, I'll cruise the bay tonight and see what looks good. 0-1" is a good one for knife making, I have bigger ones I use for reloading.

Yes there are "third hand" type clamps to hold a mic by the frame, but I like to just use them hand held like this...

Big, I had a German Shorthair and she was my best bird dog. I've had springers, brittneys, labs, and others, but my German Shorthair was the best. All instinct, no training, just refinement. There is a huge variance in the breed for size. Hopefully your kids get a couple of good working dogs!

I'm barely awake right now! Zyler and friends all had an absolute blast! It was a good party, lots of family and friends. Good times!

AAAAAAWWWWWWW crap !!! Sorry Xander I spaced Zylers party. Sorry bro!
Nighty night knife nuts. I'm turning in early. Too crazy of a day, just want it to be over. My moms house was robbed today. My stepdads house was robbed less than a week ago! I'm glad I have big Dogs. I hope you guys never have and never will know the feeling of having your house robbed!

Xander that is very helpful, thanks! I could see myself fumbling a standoff if I was holding it the way I assumed. I can tell I will be using more and more layout and measuring tools as I get into making folders.

I hope you guys had a good one!

FBC that sucks to hear, I have had my car broken to a few times and while it was a small loss it was a big deal.

I'd lojack a stereo and put it in the front window!

Once when my car stereo was stolen they busted the theft ring that stole it the next day.., they were waiting outside of movie theaters and stealing car stereos. They had a van full of stolen stereos and luckily I had my serial number. I ID'd my radio via serial number and the local police would not turn it over to me because of some paperwork garbage, long story short the secretary gave me the guys name that stole it! Funny enough he lived less than a block away. Let's just say that he didn't do well on that one!

Knives shipping out today! Yay!!!!!

Kevin, no worries man, gotta handle your business. Hope your mom is ok. I'm off wed-thurs this week.

Daniel- holding a mic isn't something that is obvious! Believe me I fumbled stuff a few times in high school when I got my first mic. I don't have it anymore because I dropped it and tweaked it. I just cruised the 'bay this morning and found a good looking 0-1" mic, sellers ID was valkareesue. Its a Mitutoyo vernier accurate to 0.0001" in a tenths scale (not fraction). Vernier will be cheaper, and with practice reading them is no big deal. My calipers are all vernier, so I'm used to it. Dial is easier to see a change when measuring many objects that are the same, digital (analog or electronic) is popular with machinists for comparing to blue prints.

Feel free to email me a link to ebay or something if you have any questions about one.

Hey Daniel, nice new avatar! When will those be available?

(Okay, maybe it isn't new, but I just noticed)

Hey thanks Xander! After some thought I probably want a vernier and a micrometer, the vernier calipers seem nice to measure hardware/etc. I went to Farmington, NM today and looked at the pawn shops to no avail, well I found some but they were too much for me. I'll have to ask you more about them soon and keep on reading in the meanwhile.

Hey thanks! I just changed the avatar today.

My avatar knife is the generation 2 Ti Backpacker! It has been in the works all year and I am really excited to release it very soon. It is just over 1/2 ounce yet the handle and blade are a decent size. This is the backpacking/ultralight camping/hiking/scuba/snorkeling/mountaineering/sailing/watersports/fishing knife that I have been talking about for a while now.

It is Ti and the handle works very well with a cord wrap, I can fit 5' of paracord on the handle. With no cord the handle doubles as a bottle opener! I chamfer and round everything to make sure it feels great in the hand either way.

My current plan is to release the keychain tools very soon (they are done!) and after that the Damascus CC Knives and then these! I am doing just old custom orders and these (Ti Backpacker) for a bit until I start folders.

I think the knife looks awesome, I like the shape :)!

Morning y'all.

-Xander

Morning Xander!

Thanks for the compliments on the knife! I have big plans for that one, I may even try to sell it through a local mountaineering store. I have been delaying the release because I am working on a special sheath design... long story short I think the new generation 2 Molle locks may be the way to go for a universal carry package. They are military approved for secure carry, you can't beat that. I want it to work for scuba and backpacking and think the original molle or molle 2 is the way to go for comfort and versatility.

I still have a bit before I release these, this is just a prototype...

Sneak Preview

Ti is sweet, but I think you should also offer it in steel, maybe 1075, 1080/84 and a stainless like 154cm. Three price points, carbon, stainless, and Ti.

I got something new on the bench, pics in a little while.

I had a second rough profiled blank from the bar I cut to get the first one and decided I should heat treat two while I have the forge going. Hopefully both of these will be finalized for heat treat tomorrow and I can burn 'em on Thursday.

I have been wracking my brain to try and figure out where I can get a piece of natural slate (or some good hard chert) to make my own hone from, don't want to drive to the hills just for that. I think that would be awesome to shave with a razor I made and honed on a hone I made. Daniel, do you happen to know what the "slate" flag stone used for landscaping is? Maybe I can dig through that stuff and find a small one to start and test out.
