Yep, I about knocked someone over to grab it off the table! If my humble little Fowler didn't have such sentimental value to me I would be sending it to Daniel instead! Its a great little mic though, its been in calibration for over 20 years, its in fantastic shape, too.

This Etalon has the old style plastic clutch, I think I might see about up grading it to a brass one so it doesn't have to be replaced again in a few years. I still need to get a 2"-3" for myself, but those are harder to find used.

Btw, make sure you don't store your 0-1" with both surfaces touching. It can trap moisture and cause rust.

Yep, good point. I use a dry film lube on mine and wipe it down before use. Its something I'm used to doing so its not a big deal. I use a dollar bill to clean the faces off, works well for me here in a somewhat dry climate. I also use a chemical dehumidifyer in my tool box and have the little coloidial silica packets that come with shoes in the drawers with my caliper, mics, tweezers, scales, files and punches. I'm thinking of putting a 30watt light in my wood cabinet to help dry some stuff I have and then store my less sensitive tools in there. I also have large, heavy plastic bags that keep stuff from rusting, one of the local steel suppliers gave me a stack of them, great for odds and ends of barstock.

I think this little mic will be a tool that if taken care of properly will be around for a very long time. Its in pretty darn good shape. I think its about 20-30 years old.

Good morning y'all. Today is my 2nd wedding aniversary. We have lived together for over two years and I still have a bike/knife shop in the dinning room .

I am just super excited about it, so awesome! Your knowledge makes the difference, I really appreciate it. So cool!

Great to know, I hadn't even thought about it.

That is probably the main way I get rust here with all the temp swings... condensation. That's one thing I like about getting wrapped steel, it always stores better.

When I lived on a boat I had to coat my guitar electronics in thick wax...

Cool stuff to know, helpful information. Man I'm excited! I'll be sure to take very good care of it.

I'm used to trying to keep things away from temp changes, guitars are bad about that sort of thing. In the winter I move my stereo speakers, lol. Old synthesizers will go out of tune even!

Congratulations! She must be cool! :D

That is awesome on the bike too, looks like my dining room/kitchen at times!

Kevin, two years down on your life sentence! Congrats brotha! Btw, is that her Mercian? I like that color, and the Ultegra brifters are a nice upgrade.

Daniel, you won't be disappointed with this mic, its a nice one for sure. I don't think the guy knew anything about the brand. Seems that Starrett is the benchmark for most these flea market sellers, they don't care if its trash, if it says L.S. Starrett on it they charge a premium. I passed on a 3 mic set of Lufkins a couple weeks ago, they were in very good shape in the original boxes but the guy wanted $40 a piece! Too much for non vernier scale (.001" resolution) mics with non carbide faces.

Hey Big, hope all is going well for you and no more jeep troubles for your daughter! Enjoy your Tuesday and some venison chili!

Good morning guys!

Xander thanks again.

I hear you on the Starrets, they are all I see here and expensive regardless of condition.

Good to see you BigCountry!

Xander, I got your postcard last night, how cool! Awesome photo and really neat the way you did the card! I'm putting the photo in the shop. :D

Gooeytek, if you are reading this... Thanks! Much appreciated!

I'm taking pics and trying to get some knives out soon!

Morning guys.

Daniel, glad you like the post card! I exchange postcards with people from around the world. I started a project a while back with PCX for Zyler. I had senders address cards to him and when they arrive they are assigned a number and I put a pin in a map with the number. Sometimes the cards have pictures from their region, and often people write nice things about their country. Its for teaching him about world cultures and geography. I was writing one out to a person in Shetland and saw this photo and thought you might like it. I make all my own postcards from shipping labels and actual photo prints. Also, I always use fountain pens. That was a Pilot Plumix, medium italic nib and schneider ink, if that is something you care about, lol!

I'll keep you on my list and send one from time to time.

Evening men. Or good morning for you easterners.

Just came in from the shop! I got a wrench made (twice, lol!) for your mic Daniel, and got it calibrated too. I also did comparative calibration to other mics and calipers. Its a very nice little mic, I'm gonna keep an eye out for another Etalon for me! I wanted to calibrate it late like this when the temps are closer to what you have there right now, it was 66* in my shop. Unfortunately I was unable to repair the clutch on this mic, so your going to have to use it manually for comparative measurements. It doesn't lock on a measurement. So tomorrow I will put together a case for it and find some info to go along with it.

This one doesnt have the normal vernier scale of 1-9 above the barrel, but it has half marks between the whole numbers on the thimble and a vernier of 1-4. So you take your thimble reading, and add it to the vernier depending on which side of the half mark. I haven't found any pics for reading this type on the net, so maybe I'll take some pics and write out some instructions if you want. Its not hard, but if you haven't used it before it can throw you for a loop. I also adjusted the thimble clutch to be pretty light, its the small knob on the end, it slips at a certain torque so you can get accurate, repetable measurements.

I'll take some pics tomorrow and post them up here.

Night y'all

Thanks again Xander! Really cool! I am seriously looking forward to it.

Sara and I were amazed with you building a wrench! too cool and thanks as well, I really appreciate it.

It is going to be perfect and my folders will be built to precision. I plan on drilling .005" under, reaming to .001" and then lapping to fit.

Thanks again (again lmao) and I am really excited! :D

Good Morning guys!

Ok, finished with walking the dog and breakfast. I got some pics taken and then I'm off to get a box, or make a box, we'll see.

Sinlge pin spanner wrench. Fully heat treated and tempered from an old file. It acted like 1095 in quench tests, so that's how I treated it. 5/64" pin made from an old drill bit so if this one ever fails you can replace it. I just super glued it in. The inside of th hook is finished pretty smooth so it doesn't bugger up the shank.

oh and that belt grinder I was sapposed to get a while back HAS BEEN SITTING IN MY WIFES PARENTS BARN THE WHOLE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I should have it by Sat.wish me luck.

Wait, WHAT?! You gonna make a knife?! I'm off on Saturday, maybe we can get together and make sparks.

So, I was foiled in my attempt to get a box for the mic today. I had a business meeting this afternoon and was going to try to head out and find a wood box before, but my truck won't start! I ended up having to get a ride to my meeting and the only charger I have is a trickle charger.

Maybe I'll dig through some scraps in the wood cabinet and see what I can come up with. Or you might end up with a multicolored acrylic box!
