cool thx, will try that. I don't put tape on the spine, should I? I have bench strops.

Tape is used only, ONLY to correct edge geometry. Too often I see people taping the spine to pevent wear, when all they're doing is creating a more obtuse edge over time. The spine should wear at the same rate as the edge, keeping the angle accurate. Ideal edge angle is between 15 and 17 degrees inclusive. Search youtube for the hanging hair test (HHT), it is a common benchmark for razors.

I would start with 30 laps on the 8K, then 50 on the CrO2, then 25-30 on linnen and 35-50 on plain leather. I often finish on plain newspaper. Fyi, one lap is out and back, one pass per side. Be sure your stone and bench strops are FLAT. I tak my balsa bench strop to 1500# on a granite countertop to get it flat, then I load it with CrO2 thinned with isopropanol to spread it.

Check out lapping films, too. You can get down to 0.3um diamond which is about 30000 grit I believe. That on a granite tile works very well. Inexpensive way to start with razor honing, "cheap" stones start about $100 and go up. Although many people do everything from bevel setting to finishing on Belgian Coticule stones.

Daniel, I managed to dig up a local stone that is some sort of slate which is pretty hard. It has a very fine grain, I have yet to lap it flat, but I plan to tonight and test it out. I will update when I get it going.

Thanks for the tips X. I follow the angle by setting the blade flat on the stone, but have been neglecting to do a thorough job on stropping past 1 micron. Will try the lapping films too, I have a good number of granite tiles.

Good afternoon !
AWC, You mean if I jump over to Canada I can get two thanksgivings in one year!?!? What is the traditional Canadian thanksgiving dinner?

Evening guys! Got some late night grinding done on a project that's been kicking around the work bench for a while. A hidden tang SGK, too big for a B&T, too small for a hunter, so it will do both! Its been heat treated andtempered, just kicking around for a while. I had some fresh 50# belts so I decided to go to town.

As I start the handle and such I will update.

Looking good Kevin!

Peace out y'all.

FBC those are looking awesome! You really have a good eye for lines and the execution is impressive!

Good to see everyone here, I have been offline for a couple of days. I think half of my electronics have died this month...

Yes, but our Thanksgiving is on Monday. Traditional dinner is the same as yours, turkey, turkey and more turkey.

Afternoon all. Cold front coming through here. Temp in the high 50's. Been raining for last 2 days but the sun is finally out.

Thanks for the kind words Daniel. It is fun to watch the grind line on the dagger walk back and forth with each pass.I am going to work on it some more today.I need to figure out what kind of handle to use.Maybe a coffin style

Those turkeys just don't get a break, do they?
Have a good one, folks!

I hear you on the weather! Yesterday I turned on the shop heater and the thermostat read 38F! (It was in the high 50's outside but still cold from the night before in the shop)

I'm scrambling to get ready for winter here, painting and getting vehicles ready. I have in laws coming in too, they are showing up right when winter starts, lol. So I have to get ready for winter and guests!

I hope you guys had a good one! My Mom's family is mostly in Canada so I think I have celebrated both! :) Turkey!!!

There have been a lot of Turkeys here lately, I saw a bunch of them the other day cruising past the shop.

Cool stuff! I really like them.

Coffin handle daggers are sweet! We should all make one!

Morning guys. Just finished a smoked salmon, scrambled egg, with capers, chives and sour cream in a buckwheat crepe. Damn good breakfast! Off to trim the mane, then get ready for work. Tuesdays are ridiculous for me, big shipment day.

Daniel, that mic should be in by now, I sent it priority and it was expected by Saturday. Let me know if it doesn't show up.

Mic in! Mic check... 1 - 2 - 3....

It is awesome! I got it in yesterday evening and it rocks! Thanks so much!

The case and wrench are too cool also. I can't believe you forged that wrench! :) :D

Haha, glad you like the "case"! I didn't want to leave you hangin around waiting for it too long, so I just grabbed th closest container that would fit! I won't be upset if you chuck it for something a little nicer later on.

Making the wrench was fun, I hadn't done that type of stuff in a while. Forging to specific dimensions sure is different. I'm sure you can google various instructions on adjusting and using the mic, like I said before, that one with the 1/2 gradations on the thimble threw me for a loop at first. Normally they have the vernier scale that goes 1-9 and no half marks on the thimble.

The case is awesome! I may spray glue it but the mic will reside there! I love stuff like that, maybe one day I can get pelican case or something nicer but I liek it how it is!

Yes I still need to learn more about using one, I have been especially busy lately but will have time soon to really learn how to use it.

It's in my shop desk drawer and I have the heater on so it will stay around 58-60 most of the year.

Luckily I have a great book that helps with that stuff thanks to IMWILSON, it is an invaluable tool.

I have my pivot lap, now time for a granite surface plate, angle plates, and a mill! lol that an an automatic center punch, I have been too cheap to buy one so far and should have long ago. Folder time soon! I have slowly been getting there and I can tell the mic will be one of my main tools

I have to say, man that thing is smooth! Thanks so much! I owe you one for sure!

I have been doing clearing with a machete and today I painted most of the shop's exterior! Man I am sore!!!

Well I did spray glue it, it didnt hold on the foam. I had some upholstery spray glue but it dried out an was no good. I used super77 with it, too. Hell, the container is waterproof, maybe just get some better foam to line it with.

I'm thinkin about what type of hndle to put on that B&T I posted. I'm stuck at that point now. I can grind the shoulders further, change the angle and possibly go for a through tang by making a toggle to fit the tang.

Off to walk down to 31flavors for a malt. I need some sweet, sugary inspiration!
