Ggooooooooood morning y'all!

Hope everyone is fat and happy today! Getting ready to go up to snow level (not my choice) with the wife and kid and mother in law. Wearing my DFK rigger with me today, it's like a pair of black shoes, it goes with almost everything.

Cheers!

Nice! Enjoy the day!

I hear you on snow level, lol I'm at it too! It still hasn't melted around the edge of my house even though it isn't that cold.

Wolf Creek Snow Report http://www.wolfcreekski.com/wolf-creek-snow-report.php 17" base!

Wolf Creek is about an hour east down the highway and has been open all month I think, Durango Mountain (Purgatory) is about an hour north and won't open for a while I bet, typical low snow year here so far. (edit I just looked and they are open today for opening day with 2% of runs open, lol one run of blown snow for $43 ) I have not looked at the Telluride snow report, if it is a good year the skiing there is incredible... I haven't been there boarding for years as it is pushing $100 to go but it really is nice! Free tram too, it is worth going just for that...

Have fun in the snow! Enjoy the rigger!

Real time update!

Donner Lake at the Summit...

Just pulled into Boreal Ski resort Sno-Park. Bundling up the kid and gonna blast the wife with some snowballs!

Just got home. 422 miles of driving, I'm wiped out! Had an absolute blast with my son today, it was his first time to the snow. Couldn't have asked for better weather, clear and about mid 50's. Zyler just played and played, great times! Packed the family up at about 230 and headed further east across the Nevada border and into Boomtown for dinner, hit the all you can eat lobster buffet. I'm not a huge fan of lobster, but the wife and her mother sure are. They both found out just how much they can eat, 11 whole lobsters between them but that's just tails and claws. I went for the tri-tip. Good times, good food, great memories!

I will post up some more pics tomorrow.

Time to beach this bloated whale on the couch for a while!

Yep, some epic scenery up on Donner summit. Daniel, this lake is roughly 1.5 miles from the spot I took the picture for the postcard I sent you. Not a whole lot of snow up there yet. We had to go all the way up to about 6000' and then once we got on the eastern slope it was bone dry! So we turned back to the west slope of the summit to get some play time in.

Here are some more pics from the day, including some more of Donner Lake. In some of the pics and the one above, if you look on the mountain in the left of the frame you can see the wooden tunnel, hand built to keep the snow off the railroad tracks. The train also weaves in and out of the mountain.

Morning y'all!

Fog is rollin in now. Talk about cold, it cuts right through anything and chills you to the bone! My family in Montana stopped coming out here in the winter because they said it was too cold in the fog, it will get -30*F there but 0% humidity. Here it will be 35*F and 100% humidity! It was a chilli ride into work, for sure!

-Xander

I know what you mean, the humidity cuts right through. It is dry here most of the time so it is somewhat easy to dress for the cold... until it gets really cold!

That rock is interesting, lots of metal in that! We have tons of iron bearing rocks here but that one looks like a really high iron content. Out in the desert near here I can find nice hematite and odd stuff, iron concretions left by bacteria that are called bombs... they are like a football and hollow as well.

Good morning folks . Xander all those pix are making me jealous. I will have to talk Jen into a camp trip . That won't be hard ,she likes snow camping.
Daniel,is their a name for this type of blade shape?

have a good one y'all. I have to go to work now.

Morning guys!

Well I was up to more late night shenannigans last night. This one has killer results. This is a project I started over 18 months ago, and got sidetracked then put it away.

Yep, that's a hamon on a hatchet! It was a $3 hatchet from the flea market that I intended to just clean up, but when I saw the magical metalurgical mystery of a hamon show up I decided it needed better treatment! I did the etch and polish last night. Its not a super fancy Nick Wheeler type of hamon, it is a hatchet afterall, but its a user grade finish with nice activity!

Now I am going to start hunting down a nice haft for it!

-Xander

Now that is cool! I think I remember when you first etched it!

After working on hamons I have to say that looks darn good! Awesome activity for a user finish or anything really.

Thanx! I ended up having to back up a few steps in the process to get the finish I liked. I initially went all the way to a soft 2500 polish after the initial polishing trying to bring out any ashi in it, but I think I ground them out or they were ground out at the factory. I cleaned it up with a flap wheel when I first started, so during the final polishing all that happened was I lost color in the hamon. So back to etching with 1:9 Ferric while buffing with a scotch brite then sponge. Back to using a polish after neutralizing but this time I used Never Dull wadding. I also have a detailed thread in the axe forum.

This is the original thread with the hatchet...

Xander , You never told me about that! That is killer!!! Nice job on bringing the hamon out!

You never asked! Lol!

Actually I forgot all about it until the other day when I found it in a junk drawer looking for something else. I'm pretty happy with the result so far, now I'm thinking a custom haft is in order, maybe a nice ash one, or curly maple, I'm also liking the idea of walnut. Its going to be a longer haft, maybe 19-22 inches.

You never asked! Lol!
WHAT? Is that a hatchet in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?:D I think it would be cool if you could make the haft out of that walnut burl you have,if that is even possible. After you get it all done, can I borrow it so I can practice my bushcraft?:D I am off tomarrow and the next day if you want to play knives.
