Xander, that tomahawk is weak sauce! My grandma makes better tomahawks!!! LMAO!!! You know I kid !!! That looks awesome !! I can just see this hanging on the wall in your bathroom next to your shaving kit.Well it is time for me to suit up and ride to work at least it is not raining as hard as it was 20 min ago!

Alcohol! Sailor Jerry tonight, then possibly a washington apple. I like a sweet drink every now and then, crown royal is the second best thing those furry canadians ever came up with, putting ham on pizza and calling it bacon to fool the rest of us is pure genius!

Oh yeah, I made a tomahawk...

Forged 1080 head, fully heat treated. Hand split and carved haft. Shaving sharp!

OK now that is badass!

Just classic! Killer job and very cool that you forged it.

I have been off of the computer lately, running around getting everything ready for tomorrow. I should have my trench dug, shop inspected and trench inspected if all goes well! This will be the final inspection too, I can't wait to get it all done.

Thanx bro! But you know me, more than meets the eye...

The bowie is in 1/10 scale, and the hawk is 1/5 (same as your USM3) so not quite a good match for each other. I'm going to start on a belt knife to go along with it in the same scale. I have plans to try and forge a mouse hawk with spike poll from some 1084 I have in .250x1

Well see how it goes, Kevin has some leaf spring that would make a great hawk, but I would need to build another forge to fit them in. I have everything to build one, just missing the motivation.

-Xander

Now that is cool! You had me too, I thought it was big.

I hope you get that big forge going! I thought you might have or some way the hawk fit in your current one.

I still want to get a forge going, it would be fun. I have a bunch of books on smithing... sounds cool. Some laminated gear would be my goal...

I'm waiting on the excavator and inspector later... can't wait!

The dust collector is in the shop and is one massive beast, 2'x3'x6'6"! I need a plug for it, I forgot it did not come with one. I got the Grizly one that is currently on sale with a free vortex lid (for a metal trash can, crucial for metal sparks) and am impressed, it is big and bad! I bet the motor is 90#.

This inspection stuff is killing me! I've been running around everywhere trying to get things done... can't wait to get back to grinding!

HA HA Xander you got me too! I was wondering how you forged a big hawk. Jen's dad gave me some old lawnmower blades I could pass on to you if they wold work for you.You are also welcome to the leafspring if you want it.
Daniel, best of luck with your inspection!!!!!

Morning y'all!

Fooling you guys with the mini is actually what I strive for. Its the mark of a good scale model, unable to tell size in the asence of familiar surroundings. I finished up a brut de forge belt knife in the same scale last night to go along with the hawk. I'll post pics of it in a little bit, I tried to go for a "frontier style" with the knife to try and match the hawk, I'll let you guys be the judge.

-Xander

Oh yeah, Kevin, lawnmower blades are good for lawn mowers only. Not enough carbon in them, even for a hawk. That leaf spring should work well though!

-Xander

Here's the brut de forge belt knife to go with the hawk.

1/5 scale
File steel blade, forged
Bronze guard
Texas mesquite handle
Copper pin peened and domed (fully functional too!)

Hammer finished face on the guard, one small gap I just couldn't get closed up, but overall fitment is good. You can see the dome to the pin here too.

Very cool! The mesquite is killer, nice looking material. Awesome job on the domed pin too, that must have been tough!

Trench dug... big enough for a small boat! OK maybe not but man it is massive... pics in a second.

Thanx! Peening that .040" pin sure made me pucker at both ends! I'm glad I have a 2oz ball peen just for small stuff like this!

I bet! Do you have a pin spinner? Looks killer!

Now that's a trench!

Have a cold one to celebrate when done!

-X

To me it looks small in the pic but it is BIG! 4:45 here... no inspector yet... I can't wait to get this done! Maybe they will show up tomorrow before it is covered but I'm pretty sure they are supposed to be here today. Either way the trench is dug so that part is good! :D

Sara is in town, I told her to get a bottle of Goslings Rum, it is a favorite of mine. :D I'm getting drunk and giving free excavator rides! :p

Daniel, Dig a big a** moat around your house before they pick the exavator up!!! You are going to need it to stop us from beating your door down when you finish your folder!

No pin spinner, I dome all my pins by hand with hammering. Its how I learned to peen and I think gives superior holding power by swelling the shank below the dome as well as mushrooming it over. Pin spinners mostly just mushroom the end like a head on a nail. Also I had to peen both sides of this installed, normally you peen one end and feed it through to cut it off and peen the other end. But this wire was too small to clamp and peen, it would have folded over.

The mesquite is from my bud DanCo in Texas, amazing how much it looks like a burl on that scale. It was a pretty nondescript piece I cut it from, but I cut it across th grain, so the grain is actually running from side to side in the handle.

Goslings and coke, hard to beat that! I just realized I'm running low on bourbon, I have 2 unopened bottles and one half gone! Crown Royal is almost gone too, but that's mostly for the wife and Great Grandma when she comes by. Farkin hilarious stuff when granny gets drunk! Nothin funnier than listening to a 200 year old woman talk sh!t and about dirty stuff! Too many people know I have a well stocked bar at my house, I keep having guests asking for drinks...but I'll bring a bottle for a ride in the bucket of the front loader! :D

Moat, check!

I did the moat, a tunnel underneath my house and a real man cave. The first bottle of Goslings is gone but I made a larger entrance to the local liquor store (for free, they will be excited when they see!) and got more!

really cool! I was just wondering on the spinner, I have never ventured into that realm of knifemaking. I might though, I ordered a block of blackwood and could try something traditional. It looks good!

Nice the mesquite is from TX! When I was a kid my Dad told me I could cut mesquite for $1 a tree plus drive the truck to get them! lol it was the ultimate job because I could make a million a day if I tried hard enough! (I thought!) I used a chisel ground USMC Bolo to chop them and actually did OK for a 13 year old. I think I made $26 before I retired. lmao!!! I told my parents they need to start a wood chip business, the front 20 acres is almost all young mesquite back home. I have 3 logs here that I will process once I get a large wood saw or maybe sooner with my big camp saw.

Too funny on the Grandma drinking!

Crown Royal... I need to try some again it has been years. I love that stuff but always buy Canadian Mist, lol. I have always been into good beer but only recently into good liquor. I really miss the Caribbean, free and good rum everywhere! You have to do a shot with every store owner otherwise you are just another baldhead, lol. I remember all of us doing a shot of 191 and the store owner finally grabbing the water, lol he told us we were tough for taking the strong rum! In most islands they have the "under counter" as it is called, strong rum, regular and then some crazy stuff usually with every spice around, seaweeds and sometimes millipedes or even meat!

a favorite... http://www.ministryofrum.com/rumdetails.php?r=52 this guy has the good rum reviews and I used to follow his work. I have a T-shirt from the distillery, they make, light, dark, strong and paint thinner in recycled bottles, lmao! you know it is quality when they have a side business selling paint thinner! :D

If you want some tips on peening pins, let me know. I've screwed up enough of them to know what not to do, lol!

I keep the Crown in the freezer, I don't pretend its whiskey, so I don't drink it like it is.

Washington Apple martini:
2oz Crown Royal
2oz De Keyupers Sour Apple Schnapps
2oz Cranberry juice

Shake over ice and serve in a chilled glass. Serve with a cherry, add more cranberry if desired.

Edit: I posted the belt knife and hawk up in shoptalk, but purposly left out any reference to scale. See if anyone picks up on it!

It is cool isn't it!

Nice drink recipe Xander. The ladies would love that one.

I am busy here... inspection is mostly done but being drawn out and about to kill me soon if I do not get it over with! Monday the electrician was out working in the dark and he has to come back later to replace a lug in the box so inspection will be final. The trench is still open but yesterday I got the OK to fill it when the inspector came over. I am expecting the excavator guy over at any minute.

It is unseasonably warm here, up to 50's in the day even at my place in the shade. I did notice that we have frost already down to 2' deep after the trench was dug! You can shave the earth back into curls like ice cream with a shovel but digging by hand would be impossible! Odd to me since it really isn't that cold at least during the day. At night is a different story!
