Good morning guys . My internet has been down for 3 or 4 days but now it is 5 times faster . Thanks to Xander I still had 50 or so Blade mags to read stored on my computer. Thanks a million for that Xander! Your pix do look awesome. Is this knife going to be a big one or another mini?Flat grind?
I have been working on my Mom's dagger. I am starting to fit a brass hilt . I will be giving you a call for advice Xander. Have a good weekend y'all!

Haha, this current knife is full size! 6.75" long, .115" thick FFG.

Good thing you got all the mags on disc from me! That's a serious knifeporn marathon! I'll dig through my files and digital knife books for sections on fitting guards and pommels. Needle files are your friend!

Headed home from th flea market now, just picked up a 1940's boys axe head to restore. Kevin, I may want to get a couple big chunks of that pecan wood for handles. Maybe I can get that knife reafy for heat treat today.

OzarkMatt was gracious enough to offer up some satinwood scales to me(thanx Matt!), they are on their way hre, so once I see them I may use them, or I have some nice snakewood too. Still trying to decide what to use on this nw knife!

Xander, you can have some of that pecan anytime.Let me know when you are going to send that knife for HT so maybe I can send mine with it.Way to go on the axe head.I am sure you will fix her up real pertty like.

Finally, internet! Our power was out for a good part of yesterday and then the net today... man it has sucked!

We had a big outage during the day then again right when we went to bed, not cool when you have to run heat tape on the pipes. I'm just glad it is back up.

We wound up getting about 15" in 24 hours... I saw the power lines bounce so hard I thought the poles were coming down for sure. The sticky snow piles up and makes the lines sag, every one in a while the snow falls and causes a chain reaction but this was nuts!

I'm tired and worn out! Time for a drink!

I had a dream about a folder and drew it up...

Hot damn! I like that shape.

I was drunk and didn't have any dreams.

-Xander

Thanks! Funny the stuff we dream about... I was drinking too and probably only remember because it woke me up... lol I had to go to the bathroom and dreamed I was looking at the knife in my bathroom. lmao... It is funny I drew it up so fast and everything worked perfect. I think I have been reading the Terzoula book too much.

Once I was having car problems due to a short. I took it to the dealership, an electronic specialist, worked on it myself but no matter what it kept popping back up. One night I had a dream about where it was and sure enough the next day I went and looked and it was there. Really weird!

I may have to make that folder eventually, it has 2 stops and is overbuilt like crazy! It is 9.3" long...

Morning guys!

Doing etching and glue up today. I was hoping to yesterday but wound up spending another day finishing after I was "done." I'm bring these to another level!

I have one mirror polished harpoon tip in the works, it literally looks like a chunk of chrome! I actually used my strop to final polish the whole knife. It was taken to 2000+ grit with the grinder then hand sanded and back to the grinder more. I found some unrated norax belts that are probably 4000+ grit. This one is getting purple CTEK over mirror polished A2, I'm hoping the mirror shows through.

Mirror polished 'poons are always good! I've seen you mention the norax belts twice in the past few days, how do those compare to the gators? I haven't been able to find out much about them.

The folder design is badass

Oops they are Trizact belts, I just looked. -> http://usaknifemaker.com/3m-trizact-cf-cloth-belt-337dc-2-in-x-72-in-a5-x-weight.html

I like them a lot, you can't beat the super fine grit and they seem to really last.

Downside - they are light so the seam causes a slight bump. I sanded down the bump and that helps a lot.

The gator belts seem to grind a bit better because of the structure/lack of bump but these go to 11. I mean A5. :D

For sharpening with a slack belt they just rock, I will always have some around for that alone. I think they are new or they are at least new to me.

Cork belts are really awesome too, I need to buy another gritless one as I popped mine. It was a year and a half old so it served me well!

 I thought the Trizact CF's were the gators... They are nice though I only have them up to A45 (400grit). Corks are nice too! I have a 400 grit cork belt I loaded with black compound, it leaves a nice clean "satiny mirror". You can see your reflection in it clearly but it has a faint 400 grit scratch pattern that leaves it just a little satiny.

Xander, the tracking says that wood made it to you yesterday, let me know if you got it.

Matt, I got it yestrday. I sent you a VM yesterday. Thanx again!

Morning guys! I'm tired, I got heat in my shop now so I wound up staying out there until 2:30am! Good thing I don't work until noon today.

I was confused too, they are different than the gators though. The pattern is smaller and the grit level is less.

edit - I just looked at Pops site (the place to get belts for sure) and there are 2 types of trizact belts, the CF (gator) and the EA which has a smaller pattern. I like the gator ones better but they only go to 600 grit. I used to use the EA for everything but I like the gators much more.

I'd just stay where you are at unless you want a really polished edge, the 45's really leave a nice finish.

Cork/black compound is where it's at! I have one set up that way right now.

Nice on the heat! It is fun getting the shop more comfortable.

I hear you on being tired! Jade has had about 5 teeth come through recently and it has been rough on us all. I was up at about 4:30 today.

It is just 5 here and I am calling it quits early besides a little clean up! I just finished up a ton of work and have 5 knives etched and glued up.

Evening guys!

Lots of good info on the belts Daniel, I need to order some for the little 1x30. I only have up to 120 now. I would like to get up to about 1K grit range to try and do as much finishing on the grinder as I can, because sanding out 120 scratches by hand sucks. Luckily I can get decent belts locally in 50, 80 and 120 grit. They're just AO, but do well.

Its nice having heat in the shop, really takes the edge off. Tough stuff dealing with teething! Hylands teething tablets are your friend! Pick some up if you haven't, it will make things so much easier for all of you! Zyler didn't go for the frozen chew toys much at all, but those tablets saved my sanity!

Thanks for the clarification Daniel. I've been buying my belts from USAKnifemaker.com, the prices are pretty much the same and Tracy has the Trizact CF's up to A5(!!!)

Thanks on the belts and good you can get some locally. AO are nice as long as you change them when they are worn out, they have a nice feel to them when grinding. I think Pops and trugrit have 1x30 belts, I had recommended some a while back and you can get just about everything in 1x30.

Yeah good to have heat this time of year! I was working outside at this time last year, it has not gotten over freezing in days now... at some times my drill press would not spin from the cold.

I still do heat treat outside but eventually want a small oven for air hardening steels inside. It is fine being outside I just think I could get more done if I could watch the kiln in the shop.

I'll check out those tablets, I just looked them up. Very cool!

No problem! I keep trying different belts and it is interesting how different they all are.

I get most of my supplies from USA, they are great all around. Top notch service and they have everything I need. By combining everything it really saves...

I like Pops for belts and if you go with 3M over the blaze belts they are a lot cheaper and won't gum up your platen. I like to spread around my business and Pops is a good guy. Usually my belt order is so big I have to order them separately anyways. I spend as much on belts as everything else combined.

There is one company I will not order from anymore but have had great luck with all the rest.

NJSteelBaron is the way to go for steel. I also buy from flatground, they have nice steel.

I had not ordered belts for a while and am just down to it on new ones... have more at the PO right now luckily!

I finally feel like I have used everything up and will probably toss them all, I bet I have half a truckload of belts on the wall! I use the fresh ones for bevels then they get downgraded to flats status... after they won't grind the flats evenly they get tossed. I have a ton of marginal ones that need to go! I had this crazy huge rotation going on and my whole grinding room is now full, lol it will nice nice to toss them all! :D

Morning men.

It was friggin c-o-l-d on the ride to work today! My ears still hurt. I rode most of the way with my hands in my pockets.

Got to use the spike a bit again last night, it is really proving its worth! Thanx again Daniel! I did a little personalization to it with some ropework, pics in the photo gallery here. I have been still tossing around the idea of epoxy soaking the wrap on my DFK tanto, but I read a post on here where someone is using wood hardener to soak the wraps. So I brought up a few porn sights and I'm thinking that's not the wood hardener they were talking about... :p

Seriously check out those teething tablets, they are homeopathic and can be dosed as needed. There was a voluntary recall a couple years ago, but it was to err on the side of extreme caution, the FDA determined no issues with them. They have been around a long time, 80+ years. I was skeptical at first, but they work!

Have a good one fellas!

(Kevin, I know who you're thinking of while watching this...)

Daniel, I need a sword of this caliber immediately! :p

OK that rules!!! You are the chosen one!!! lmao...

The hardener sounds good, I have seen some knives done that way that looked excellent.

Yes homeopathic stuff is neat, trippy how it works. We have some books on making homeopathic medicine and it is really interesting.

Still laughing from that video, it may be thread worthy!
