It is cool isn't it!

Nice drink recipe Xander. The ladies would love that one.

I am busy here... inspection is mostly done but being drawn out and about to kill me soon if I do not get it over with! Monday the electrician was out working in the dark and he has to come back later to replace a lug in the box so inspection will be final. The trench is still open but yesterday I got the OK to fill it when the inspector came over. I am expecting the excavator guy over at any minute.

It is unseasonably warm here, up to 50's in the day even at my place in the shade. I did notice that we have frozen ground already down to 2' deep in spots after the trench was dug! You can shave the earth back into curls like ice cream with a shovel but digging by hand would be impossible! Odd to me since it really isn't that cold at least during the day. At night is a different story!

Mornin!

That recipe is a tasty one. I like it because its not overly sweet, and I can lean heavy on the crown to my liking, but if the chicks want it I go heavy on the cranberry.

Doughnuts and a rockstar this morning! Raining like crazy here too.

Daniel, if that inspector start jerkin you around just walk him into your shop and show him what exactly you make!

Exactly! The electrician had called and warned me about coming out... said he didn't want to startle a knifemaker!

The inspector was really cool, everyone has been great. I can't wait to get done though; if the excavator sits around here any longer I'm driving it! :p

I have been getting the dust collector set up and wow, it is downright scary! No vehicles or anything smaller should be near the intake. It takes up about half of my grinding room so I am trying to figure out where it will go. I am really happy with it and it seems great for the price.

Morning y'all!

got the day offf today, working on the "honey do" list right now and should be able to get out into the shop in a few minutes.

I've got ideas; sharp things, pointy things, folding things, carbon fiber things. some designs to work out, but I've got Vivaldi's Winter going in the head phones right now and am really focused when I listen to classical (even if its a speed metal version!).

Daniel, you ever heat treat bandsaw steel (15N20 like?) I have a couple pieces that i need hardened because a 2BF isn't ideal for anything that requires a soak at temperature. Great for 1080/1084 and others do ok but I want these to be good.

Nice....

Cool posting the spike and the wrap is just killer! Thanks

Vivaldi is good stuff, I have Bach and Paganini on my Pandora (just got it) and a lot of great classical on vinyl. The Time-Life Classical Box Set from the 60's(?) is my favorite, 20 albums or so all recorded at incredible quality. One mic for most! It is neat to compare different versions of my favorites, some are much better than others of course. Cool stuff from a production standpoint too...

Send me that steel, I should be able to heat treat it. I have some 11 second oil which is ideal for that sort of material.

Cool on the ideas, I have been working in CAD every day now, the folder is very close.

I just paid the excavation guy! Trench covered. :D

Evening gents.

Just got the Xmas tree up and decorated, I'm glad that's over! Got a nice looking 7' noble fir this year.

Daniel, the steel I have is just about 1/16" maybe just .060" thick. I think an oil start and plate finish would be good, but you know more about it than me. My email I sent you was brief, but I just wanted to thank you publically for the spike, it really does work well and looks fantastic! A first class tool that I think you should make more of. I'm a big fan of spikes as a tool for all types of uses, not just rigging and aboard ship. Anytime you are working with cordage they are almost required. I think everyone should try one!

I'm glad to finally get a handle on that tanto, I can use it more than just around the house! A sheath is next.

I do an oil quench for a 5 count then go o the plates on the thin 15n20, I recently started doing that and it does keep everything straighter.

I have found out that if steel wants to warp that it will, I recently had two .25" thick knives warp repeatedly with a plate quench and 200 pounds on the plates.

Great on the spike! I need to use one more myself. The handle looks killer! Wraps are tougher to me than scales to get perfect.

Did I email you back... I am getting behind on my emails.

16 knives ground in the last few days! All kinds of good stuff is coming up soon.

Very true on the warping, I get it quite a bit with the minis. I now always do normalization cycles on them, works real well for keeping them straight out of quench, even water quench on .030" steel!

Yeah, wraps are difficult to get perfect, tension, lay, twist all have to be the same for the entire length. The spike just makes fixing it up after much easier. The flat x-section of this spike works very well for this stuff without disturbing the lay of the strands too much. Yes, you did email me back, I was just repeating myself here!

I got my 12" Old Hickory Chefs Knife all ready for use last night and jus finished sharpening it tis morning. Laser sharp! I also rounded the spine a bit for comfort. It will get a new handle eventually, but I just want to use it for a while first.

Good stuff...

I bet that Old Hickory is sharp, I bet they are made out of something like Aldo's 1084, fine grained material. My Dad used to buy a new one every year and sharpen it down to a filet knife shape after daily use on the farm.

More grinding yesterday! Lots coming up soon...

Morning.

I've heard that OH knives are 1095 steel, either way it still takes a wicked sharp edge and holds it for a decent amount of time, great knives. Just don't use them for fish, HC steel can taint the flavor of the fish, giving it a metallic taste.

Todays ride to work just sucked. Its a bit foggy so I grab my knee warmers out of my bike bag and put them on under my jeans, I ended up fighting with them the entire ride tryin to keep them from sliding down. I have an iced latté I'm drinking and while fighting with my knee warmers I hit a man hole cover and I splashes up all over me and the bike, my glasses became blinders because the fog built condensation up on them. There's enough moisture in the air that my hair became wet enough to make my hair gel run and my hair look like crap. Then I feel a sharp pain in my side, I reach around and my knife has lifted up out of its sheath inside my jacket (from my bag strap) and was digging into me! I normally put my jacket waist band inside the sheath but forgot to this morning and as I lifted up my bag and tightened the strap it lifted the knife out. Then I get to work and accidentally hit a wrong number while entering my alarm code!

Ugh, it can only go up from here, I hope! All this in my <5min ride of 0.95mi to work. I'm staying in my office this morning until the sun comes out.

Lord have mercy! May the day only get better!

I have been busy so far today and am already taking a break. I need to work on my dust collector situation, lol it is outta control in the shop... looks like a lunar lander blew up in there or something.

up at 2:20 am here... my finger woke me up! I gashed it on a belt earlier grinding and it is swollen and hurting, I just cleaned it really well.

The side of a belt will cut you pretty good at 80 grit and full speed.

I just noticed the heater is cranking on every 15 minutes, it just cut off and I can hear the house crackling and moving as it cools. It is freaking cold out there!

I'm going to go drool at knife pics! :D

Morning!

Keep a close eye on your finger dude, no need to be getting infected and stopping the grinding. Ive cut myself the same way, those suck!

Back to work today for me. The wife has been busy really pushing her baking business, so on my days off I watch Zyler while she preps for the next show. She has been doing pretty well, hoping to go big time next year.

Hey hey hey!

I hear you on the finger, I do that from time to time with no infection but this got bad fast... nothing to worry about but I will watch it close. I keep a bunch of soap and borax in my grinding bucket and I swear it wards off infection but not this time.

That is really interesting on the baking, cool stuff. Where is she selling at? That is a good idea! Cool the business is doing well.

The wife has been selling her baked goods at craft fairs lately, splitting a table with my mother. My mom makes soaps, candles, also does sewing and is ding custom guitar straps now. Brandi has 3 culinary degrees, but she really loves the baking and decorating. She does cupcakes, cakes, breads, cookies and such. Good thing is, she's actually making a small profit at each show! She's very diligent about keeping business money seperate, so I know I'm not funding it beyond what I buy from her. Yes, she even charges me full price.

Time for work!

Morning y'all!

Rained again last night, so the road was nice and wet for this mornings ride. Not too bad though, no butt stripe, just need to clean the bike up a little.

Got to playin around with a red neck softbox for pictures last night, and it improved my pictures 100%! Daniel, I highly recommend you make one! Not a full on light tent, but just a softbox on a couple arm lights. I just took cardboard and taped plain printer paper inside of it, wrapped it around the lamp fixture and taped a piece of paper over the front. Huge improvement! No more waiting for decent natural light! I asked apecifically about aquarium photography in the photog forum on here and member Timbit gave me some great advice for shooting them as well as for knives, worth it to check out!

Here is the softbox

Nice results on those pics, X!

Looks like a lot of response from that little wharnie giveaway Daniel, drawing a winner at midnight tonight!

Looking good! The mini is just killer and the pics are looking great. I like the soft box idea and use that method. I think you gave me the idea... I just use tissue over my bulbs.

My photos aren't all the awesome though but I think I need a new camera. Lighting is most of it but it is old. The one I have was very inexpensive and I have gotten at least 15,000 photos taken with it now! The lens coating was damaged a few years back so it is not the best. Then again I can't complain about that many pics on one camera, I have only used two sets of rechargeable batteries on it the whole time too.

I have a lightbox, I think it was $12 shipped or something crazy cheap. It takes up lots of space and time to set up so it does not get enough use. My next improvement will be to get some brighter bulbs, the ones I have are pretty small.

Just awesome on the minis, they are really cool.

That is awesome! I have been following it and that is great to see. Thanks for doing the give away, very cool.

I have a foot of snow here, I think I better do some snow removal in case we need to leave! It is like the CO version of mowing, lol.

I just checked the snow report down the road at Wolf Creek Resort - 21 inches in the last 48 hours! A few years back they got 6 feet overnight and had to close down! A lift even got covered! It is at higher elevation than here and is a real snow hole, I bet they got 6" in the town just down the road.

Morning!

Thanx Gooey! Thanx Daniel!

I've been thinking about a light tent, but your right, they do take up so much room! Maybe I'll make just a little one for the minis, but the softbox on my one light sure seems to the job. I use a single 100W incandesant bulb. Just be sure to change your white balance for the type of light you're using.

I started a new knife the other day, freestyle grinding! Just grab a small bar and go to the grinder, haven't done that in a while and I'm glad I did! It sure is fun and a certain sense of accomplishment to make a decent looking blank just freehand. Its the first blade I have marked, too! I've got a WIP thread in shoptalk right now, as well.
