Check this out, this is some spalted pecan wood I got from a downed tree at Kevins house, this stuff is crazy! The spalting is just so figured and tight patterned, unlike maple at other that just get long black lines running through them. I turned this handle down last night for a project I'm working on and it has only the first coat of Tru-Oil on it.

That's damn nice X. I've got some spalted tamarind laying around but it doesn't have near that amount of spalting in it. Is that going to be a handle for one of your scrimshaw tools?

Thanx Matt! I really was hoping to find a little spalting when I got that wood from Kevin, but when I split one billet and saw this I knew it was going to be some cool stuff! This handle is for a companion tool to a marlingspike, called a pricker, its basically a smaller and finer pointed spike with a handle for working with small cord and larger sewing tasks like leather or canvass sails. I use a 2mm lead holder for my scrimshaw points, but that's not a bad idea!

Holy crap Xander that looks AWESOME! How did you turn that ? It looks like it was done on a lathe.
Got the day off and the wife is at work.I will make knives today!

It was lathe turned, but not on my lathe! Rather than set up my wood lathe for this little project I drilled a hole in the block I liked, put a steel mandrel in it and chucked it in the drill press. I took my live center and set it in the table under the wood, brought the piece down and locked it in place, then I used a piece of angle iron for the tool rest. I made a mini verticle lathe, basically. I roughed in with a 1" bowl gouge, cut the groove with a 1/2" gouge and smothed with a 3/4" straight skew. Sanded and burnished on the "lathe".

I just glued it up and put a couple more coats of finish on it. I will work on it some more tonight after work.

Wow Xander that is cool! Killer spalting and cool technique.

local wood too... really nice

We got a lot of cleaning and catch up done today... with the in-laws here we have a baby sitter! One more day of catch up then I am in the shop!

Hey Xander there is a thread in Shoptalk about rigging knives!

Funny, I just saw that and replied! Of course I had to how mine off :D

I just got home from the Sailing Club and logged on and saw that post. I offered to help out with any question he may have, and I hope you chime in over there as well.

Mornin y'all!

I will, I just need to be more coherent, lol! I was grinding and hand sanding all day and am about toast...

5 sheaths done! I'm finishing up the batch I started before I left, they are close now.

Nice!

On break here, about to go work on the horizontal grinder... I need to figure out what the wobble/runout in the drive wheel is.

Working on that spalted pecan handle today some more, its finishing out very nicely! I just put coat #16? on and its looking killer. I am going to cut the shine back to a semi gloss/satin sheen, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy the high gloss build up this finish gives! Still a few more coats to go, I'm expecting 20 coats minimum, maybe more.

Back to the finishing bench, aka dining room table!

looks like liquid! incredible finish

It reminds me of a coffee with cream just added, very cool

I'm impressed, and to think that came from Kevins yard, wow!

Morning 'squatches!

Just finished a lengthy post over in shoptalk compiling all my thoughts on the design of rigging knives, I have received several emails asking for the info after I posted in there, so I just wrote it out in the thread. Daniel, if you see anything I omitted, please let me know.

Well, so much for my day off today, Zyler has the beginnings of a lung infection and had to stay home sick. Poor guy, he has this terrible cough, and we have a vaporizer for him but he despises the thing! I ended up sleeping on the floor last night because he fell asleep in my bed with his mother and I was trying to let him sleep as much as possible. So I just propped him up with several pillows and left him there. He also had a 102.2 fever last night, thankfully it broke after a couple hours and is holding at 99.6 now.

I will try and get some work done in the house today, though. He seems pretty content watching TV on the couch by himself.

Xander I saw that post, awesome info! I think you summed it up way better than I could plus your experience goes a long ways.

I hope Xyler feels better soon! Sounds rough...

I just finished up that spalted pecan pricker a few minutes ago. It came out pretty good, I think. I really like the satin shine compared to the high gloss for working, but the high gloss just looks so killer! I didn't completely dull it out, but its still good looking.

Thanx Daniel, I have been answering emails the last two days from that thread, so I just took all the questions I got and compiled it all into one post. I hope I didn't leave anything else out!

Zyler is a trooper, he's got his helmet on, sitting on his skateboard in the living room watching a movie. He's in a pretty good mood for the most part, so its not too terrible.
