Xander! Your traditional Japanese blade making will be lots of work. Good luck.
Daniel- Is yer grinding improving??

thanx Rolf, I don't doubt that it will. This is a project for myself, so it will be slow and steady to get it done. Either way, it will be a learning experiance!

Finished up the marlingspike today, ran out of time to keep working on the pricker, but I have th next two days off to get it done.

X- As you know, your project will be well worth it. The Japanese blade is gorgeous, in form and function.
Hi doods!!
rolf

Morning everyone, I just got back from working out of town since Sunday with no internet. Lot's of cool stuff happening in Fairlyland!

G'marnin!

Rolf, the traditional japanese blades really do have such pleasing aesthetics in their simplicity, yet are more complex than most western counterparts. I'm really wanting to build a shōbu kuzuki tanto in aikuchi fittings. I am going to do the habaki in mokume gane.

Well just about done with my breakfast, gonna head out to the shop and finish that zebra wood pricker.

Hey hey hey! I got your letter and your design is killer! So cool... :D must talk more...

You will rock it I know! I'm going to make a more traditional Waki and Katana eventually. Cool you are finishing the 'spike, it is looking good.

Nice!!! Tai Goo did a great habaki tutorial, I need to find the link. Mokume sounds killer! Rayskin handle? seamless or wrapped? sounds killer!

Cool!
Do you have the book, The Samurai Sword, by John Yumoto, Xander?
Daniel- Re: the Design. The only way to know if this will work, is to make a proto. It looks good on paper but might bomb on steel!

Very true... I really like the concept and it is very unique. It would be cool for a massive camp knife too.

(milled in plunge)

I haven't seen the Tai Goo tutorial I don't think, but Jesus Hernandez has a breif one on his site. No wrapped handle on this one, it will have a tsuka and contrasting saya. My wood bandsaw is back up and running again, so I can get nice clean cuts. Rolf, no, I don't have that book. Maybe I'll head over to B&N to order it, I have a gift card I need to use anyways.

Oh I read through both The Complete Bladesmith and The Master Bladesmith the last two days and there was no material about construction, mostly just forging and terminology. Lots of good info otherwise, good to get a refresh on some of it anyways.

Also, isn't it Stu Branson that makes japanese blades? I thought I remembered seeing his work on here, been a while since I have seen anything by him though.

Ugh, I don't care how many times you do glue ups, its always a mess and even more nerve wracking when working with finished parts! The only post assembly finishing it just a light polishing and cleaning for the pricker. Fully finishing the handle seperate makes life much easier, no need to worry about getting handle finish on the shank or stray scratches from things.

Sonofawhore...

My anodizer and supplies have been "Out for delivery" since 0512 this morning...

That's more than an entire 8hr shift...so I'm assuming the driver is done for the day. :(

Oh well. I'm off to HF for some ceramic tumbling media. STONEWASH!

Xander, I'll look through my books and see what I was thinking of. Sorry about that! he has a third book too but maybe that isn't it. I have a million books...

I used to lock myself in the bathroom for glue up, lol! Now it is more casual but there is sometimes much swearing involved, you know! :D one slip up...

I don't know why but an old t-shirt or rag works better with acetone for clean up than paper towels/etc, at least in my luck. I usually use q-tips though. The pointy ones rock.

Looking good! using the dye is a nice touch too

Stonewash! :D

I get packages delivered three miles from here on the highway at around 9pm. No joke... you would think I live in the middle of nowhere but there are other houses around, lol. We don't get TV or a phone signal either, it is wacky back here! Usually it takes a few days once it says out for delivery too... squatch territory! :D

I hear the HF ceramic is the way to go, nice.

If its coming UPS, then it is scanned when the truck is loaded as "out for delivery" at the early hours of the morning. The driver may not even start until 7 or 8 am. My dad is a UPS driver, so I get the inside scoop on this stuff! If USPS, then you're lucky it was even scanned! But they do the same thing, FedEx too.

I need to build a tumbler, I think a stonewashed finish on the marlingspikes would be cool. I think I have an old rotisery motor sitting around here, a little math and I should be able to get a good rpm. A few roller blade wheels on a small frame, all thread for axels and it should be ready to roll!

Sounds good on the tumbler. I used a pvc pipe/caps/media and squatch power to stonewash my latest batch. I was pretty sore afterwards though, lol.

I want to build one too, a Mr.Deburr is seriously on the list but can be made from scratch as well. I do have the small HF one, it is nice. A big one is on the list...

I'm doing a Yeti-actuated PVC tube, too. Or maybe just a big cheapass plastic thing from Wallyworld. Some dude on Youtube seemed to get really nice results.

I figure, if someone on Youtube does it, that guarantees safety and reliability. Next, Nitroglycerin!

Good morning! Did you get your power going? I hope you had a good week...

Not quite, the contractor and I were working on it earlier, I just got back in from crawling in the attic all day. We have about one more day of work and then it will be ready! It's a 20x20' space with lots of power, lights and windows. Gonna build a bunch of workbenches once the power is done.

Good morning y'all. coffee is brewin' and the eggs are cookin' . Making a new knife for myself . I am trying out a LH convex chisel zero grind. have a good one!
