Fall Becker East Gathering Pic Thread

Wow those sound incredible! This might be the worst part of me missing the gathering.

Just roasted pecans with salt and butter. I did gather the pecans myself at our place down in Alabama, and my wife did roast them the same way her grandma taught her. Quite tasty. Just ask Derek. He gobbled my nuts right up.

I wish I had taken more pics but I was simply too busy having fun, checking out knives, making pieces of wood smaller, and stuffing my face. :o :D

I can only second what everyone else has said... what a great time! Perfect weather, plenty delicious food, fantastic conversations, learning experiences, everyone chipped in and helped each other, much hilarity and laughter and good clean fun... and perhaps most importantly, young'uns having a blast and moving good traditions forward. :)

gmoneyluv and several folks had sort of a running convo Friday night about how interesting and gratifying it is that Beckerheads share so many positive traits and interests - all of which revolve around being part of a community as well as being self-sufficient and just plain enjoying life.

Thank you all for letting me be a small part of it, especially Ethan :)

One of Vik's very popular camp chairs...

Chance giving a cordage tutorial. Gutsy observes, Doc is filming.

You can't come away from a gathering without picking up some sharp stuff. Here's some of the new family.

A brand new King looks so sexy in black.

A Wetterlings Forester's Fine axe. I really, really like this little dude. Will go in the boat for sure.

An AIG made chopper. This thing is absolutely insane. Doc gets the handles and balance just right on these.

And a dandy little Opinel saw. Will pair up great with the King.

And Kay ordered a custom paring knife from Mr. Terrio which she is super excited about. Is it done yet? :D

She told me she waited this long to get a custom, so she didn't mind waiting a little more. So I figure we're on the 10-year program :p

Clarification. Not the third or fourth chop from the start. We chopped quite a bit with it prior to the "adjustment."

Vik tried it and chopped some smaller stuff. Ethan tried it and chopped some smaller stuff.
I tried it and chopped some smaller stuff, and I chopped on a large fallen tree. No issues.
The issues arose with chopping a small, live tree. Different angles, green wood. Stresses went sideways and were too much.
Ethan seemed to think the issue involved having a knife edge/grind on what is essentially a machete. Too thin at the edge.
Like Moose said, to its credit, no chip outs.

Just the sort of feedback I was looking for. Glad to hear it didn't chip, although I credit that entirely to the heat treat from Peters. I'll text you my number, Uncle E (-edit- when your PM folder gets cleared out so I can). Would be glad to get some wisdom about the grind. If I do a steeper saber type convex on that, it will definitely require thinner stock and probably some serious fullering or weight relief in some areas.

Trade,

^^This^^ I want to hear about this^^.

I have had the hots for this since I first saw it.

I was leaning toward the L.S. Bushman Axe, but I think the FFA may be a better choice.

Please throw some feedback my way when you can.

Thanks,
LV,

and, of course, coffee.

There were several pipe smokers in attendance.

I brought a few of my favorite blends. And gmoney also brought a good selection of pipe tobaccos, including one called Bracken, which contained a particularly potent amount of nicotine and gave quite a ride.

Hey Jordan:
You get an A+ on your Dutch Oven skills. You've got a real knack for it. I've been cooking in one for >2 decades and you've got "it."

Thank you Mr. Becker for hosting me this weekend. I had a blast. I'm going to try to make it to Beckerhead West (but I'm still in the infancy stage of planning.)

Finally, my video take on all of this is uploading. It is like 33 minutes of heaven for me. I woke up at 4 this morning and the switch was ON to get this done. This video harkens back to my earlier style - very musical and visual. Not a lot of dialog. I've found that people are split as to that style of YouTube vid. If they come in watching it as a mini-movie, then all is well. If they come in expecting the usual YouTube cat videos then they hate it. This is the video style that makes me happy but results are not consistent. As of this post it has about 2 hours to go uploading. I'm somewhat doubting I'll get it posted on the Becker Subforum before tomorrow morning but if you're super eager it will be up an ready in a few hours.
