Favorite Brand Folder

For me, a nice slipjoint fits the bill for the everyday tasks. I would love to see a slip joint produced by ESEE again.

Paul

I wouldn't mind seeing ESEE do a slip joint someday also. Maybe a single blade with a modern handle material like micarta or G-10.

Just as I suspected, there are many currently manufactured folders that forum members use and like. My original post was questioning the need for ESEE to completely design a new one, and then go through the big hassle of finding a competent company to make it at a decent price. My thinking at the time was why not choose a good model, with some slight modifications and have the ESEE logo put on it. But now that I know that Rowen has experience in making folders, and that Jeff is hell bent on getting his design made, it will be interesting to see how the final product compares with other high quality folders. What, exactly, is unique about the proposed ESEE-3F? I guess I'll have to actually hold one and use it to find out. Jeff, feel free to send me your Italian-made prototype for review. I'll give it back. I promise. :D

I run a few kershaws and for everyday letter opening and stick sharpening I have not had any problems. I have been using a Model 1 from onterio recently and for a cheap knife it is doing alot better then I thought it would.

I carrying ZT's i have a 301 and a 302 for everything, a 350 for discreet carry and a benchamde 970 for duty carry, but i want to replace the benchamde soon to a ZT0200ST.

I'm sure that you've seen the Ontario/Rat slipjoints. I think that they were manufactured by queen and had Ram's horn scales with D2 blades. They are SERIOUSLY good looking knives.

I see where you're coming from HD.

I think this is a good opportunity for Jeff and Mike to produce a folder that has what THEY want for their purposes and direction.

I think they have a good idea of what they want from a folder and there probably aren't a lot of companies willing to bend over backward to produce it, especially when the "perfect" folder may be attritutes from a lot of different companies or designs.

I think that is it. Jeff has already told us how much he enjoyed using the prototype. Ever order the latest tricked out folder only to have it gather dust because it didn't feel or work as good as it looked? It's happened to me several times. Judging by all the flicking going on down in the pit at the last Blade Show I attended, most users just like flicking them open and impressing each other with how beautiful and expensive their folders are. You don't really know how good any knife is until you take it out and actually use it for cutting chores. Still, I did enjoy hanging out with a bunch of knife nuts drinking beer and flicking folders open. Sounded like......freedom. :D

That´s the exact point why I spent two years wasting money on different folders :D... Only when using it, you can say whether it´s good knife or not.

But if you try using more knives with different designes, blade shapes, grinds, handles, locks etc. during some period, you´ll get to know what you want from your folder. And then you are able to say quite exactly, if the folder is going to be good and worth a try, just when looking at the pics. Or if buying it would be like throwing your money to garbage. Cause you´re experienced.

And I think, the Esee-3F will perform perfectly! And I don´t see any single reason why to come with new design??? This folder is pure Esee at first glance (and this is making it UNIQUE!), it seems strong, reliable and simple. And simple knives are the best knives.

No one mentioned Striders? Mild mannered Mick is going to be upset if he finds out. I keep looking at the Strider PTs but so far they haven't lured me away from my edc ZT350. I'm not unhappy with any aspect of the ZT especially since it's about 1/3 the price of PT. I actually like the extra weight of the ZT for use as a non-lethal impact weapon, glass breaker, etc. I do like the way the thumb studs engage the frames of both the Striders and ZTs when the blades are open and I would like to see Jeff revise the ESEE design to include this feature.

I'm waiting on the Izula folder.Jeff said that Rowen will make it.I think it will make a perfect little edc blade, legal almost anywhere.

My favorites that I carry are my Benchmade griptillian in D2 and a Boker appaloosa whittler. I love the Axis lock on my Benchmade, it has not let me down. I always carry a whittler because I love to carve stuff for kids in the neighborhood, mostly scout neckerchef slides.

I've been through my share of of folders in search of the right one. For about the last 1 1/2 years I've been carrying a ZT 0350. It's built rock solid and is around the right size. I never knew that Rowen had made any folders in the past either. That's great news to hear! That thing is going to be a straight forward hard core folder that will end my search for the perfect EDC folder.

From a price to performance ratio, I've never had a bad experience with a Kershaw folder. I've had 2 Blackouts (one got lost, the other got lost to Southwest Airlines when I forgot to take it out of my pocket), and I'm still using my old Gen 1 Blur. The Gen 1 blade steel isn't the greatest, and it's the one that had the sandpaper inserts on the handle, but I've grown attached to the little bugger over the years. EDC'd every day now and the assisted opening still works like a charm.

That said, the 3F or the Izula F will be replacing it as soon as they hit market, especially if Rowen is behind its manufacture.

I was never really into folders until I saw the hest folder. It was love at first sight. Before that I just used cheap throwaway folders that when they broke, I just didn't care. Still waiting for my LE to ship though. When it gets here I'm pretty sure it will be my favorite folder until dpx releases something new, or esee deside to make folders. Other than that, I'll stick to fixed blades and cheap throwaway folders.

Rowen will be the manufcaturer. They have made folders before and they are extremely high quality. A lot more to folders than meets the eye, thus the reason we have been so damn picky about who can/will do one for ESEE.

Yes... AMERICAN made... Now I guess I will have to get at least 2 of them...;)
