A few months ago I purchased a sheet of Camo Burlap off Gary at fibermascus. The communication between us was great up until I received my knife back from Jay at Sunrise River Custom Knives. I had ordered a sheet from Gary to send to Jay in order to make me a new handle for my fallkniven A1. The sheet cost me $160 and I was hoping that once my handle had been made I could sell the remainder of the material to recuperate a bit of cash. When I had the material and the completed knife in my possession I was appalled how the material had turned out. What first inspired me to go with camo burlap is the knife that Neil Blackwood did and I was impressed with the colors how between the layers there was noticeable difference. What I have been given is little more than brown micarta! The colors do not show through in the layers at all and it is garbage to say the least. I called Gary at fibermascus and he was not in the slightest interested in helping me and was so blunt as to say he was not doing business with me anymore and was not interested in my concerns. I just want to warn people about this man, his communication is great up until he has your money and you have his defective piece of material. :jerkit:

(( This is a resurrected thread. You can read through for the whole story or go directly to post # 47 for its current status. ))

go down there and slap him with the rest of the role. just kidding man I will remember this story thanks for the info it helps.

Sunrise River Custom Knives should be called "cheap kit knives sold as customs to suckers"

I do notice that he seems to have removed the folder kits from his site, some of which were licensed designs from real knife makers.

Too bad about the faulty material, but you really ought to have returned it before using a part of it if you wanted a refund.

I've never tried fibermascus but I can tell you I absolutely won't do any business with Sunrise River Customs. Most, if not all of his so called "custom knives" are made from kits or pre-made blades that you can buy from any of the knifemakers supply stores on the web.

Now I don't have any problem with someone selling "kit knives" as long as you inform the customer as to what they are actually getting. SRC does not - he has been passing his pre-made blades off as handmade customs for several years now. (at one time he actually had a bottom of the line $12.95 kit knife with pre-machined scales from knifekits.com on his site priced at $150.00 dollars - the only thing he did to the thirteen dollar kit knife other than screw it together was etch the SRC logo on it.)

Sorry I put this in the wrong area.
I refuse to be ripped off like this and I will go completely out of my way to let this be known. Does anyone know of a site I can report him to for unfair trading on the internet ?

haha I am certainly going to be paying him a visit into next year.

Yes, granted. The thing was I live in Canada and it was easier to ship between two American companies. I never asked him for a refund and I would of stood the cost of the whole defective piece if he had made me just the section again of what I asked for properly. He has ceased all communication with me and has told me outright that he will not do business with me. I have never met anyone so unreasonable ! What happened to "the customer is always right" ?
I never had a problem with SRC, Jay was a fair man and did what he could. Thats just my experience.

Also I would like to show everyone what I wanted compared to the material he had sent me. How do I add my own personal Photos to this thread ? I see when I try to add an image it asks for a URL and I only have them on my Hard drive.

There are a number of web hosts including imageshack.com.

Sorry to hear about your problem, but remember we as on-line buyers must beware.
It's still true, hind-sight is 20/20.

It would be really nice to have Gary post his side of this, but I don't think he is a member here. I have sent him an email. Maybe he will make an appearance here.

Welcome to Bladeforums! The really cool way to post pix is to become a member -- then you can upload your pix directly from your own hard drive to the Bladeforums servers. Click on "Upgrade your forums experience, and help support this site" at the top of any page for membership details.

You can also post pix by using another host on the web. There are several tutorials floating around the forums; you might have a look at http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=371650

Send them to me, and I'll post them for you. Addy is kiah@nerdshack.com

kiahs, from the FAQ: Image Rules
Don't host images / attachments for non-paying members

Attachments are a feature for paying members, by hosting them for non-paying members, you are hurting this site.

To clarify that, using your privilege as a member to put attachments on the Bladeforums servers to host pictures for others is not allowed. Of course you're welcome to use whatever other space you may have elsewhere on the web to host pictures for others. I think that's what Kiahs is offering to do.

Yeah, like Cougar said, I was offering to host them on my own server. That's where all my images on the board are at. I apoligise for the confusion, and if you'd rather me not do that either, no problem.

harrybobble, membership (Gold +) has the added perk of being able to sell knives and gear here that you no longer want. It's a much better experience than auction sites.

No problem! :)
Just reacting to a fairly common & generous offer, to make sure it isn't carried too far.

After all, I AM supposed to be the grinch here. :p

I would be more than happy to pay to this site in order to show the pics. I just have to borrow a camera. Should have them on here in a day or two. Thanks for everyone elses advice.

I made one piece of burlap cammo material 1 1/2" thick from the same bolt of cloth used in the Blackwood knife. It required special tooling to accommodate the extreme thickness. I spent most of 4 days finishing this custom order plus $75 in materials not counting tooling material cost. The material was never represented to look the same in a thick section as in Neals thin knife handle. The customer was advised that it would not look the same.

Thanks
Gary

I am borrowing a camera tomorrow so I can take some pictures. I was always advised that it would not look the same as Neils Knife as there would be alot of cross section on view which would not show colours. I was always aware of this. The issue I have is the colors of the face of the material the are both extremely dark so there is no noticable difference. I was not made aware of this. Days and costs do not mean anything to me when I do not have what I wanted. I would of payed more to have it right and if he had said that it will come out just looking like brown micarta I would never had bothered.

I am just practicing adding photos for now. This is the Camo Burlap of Garys on a Neil Blackwoods knife I kept referring to. I had attached this in my e-mails when I was explaining to him what I wanted.
harrybobble
Can someone tell me if they see the pic ? I just get a red X
