Fiddleback User Pics

I carry a dedicated striker. Oddly enough, I have a full height grind hiking buddy that does not have a beveled/chamfered spine. I still wouldn't use it to strike a ferro unless my life depended on it.

I carry a striker too. But only if I'm carrying a knife with a rounded off spine.

In my experience, 01 and D2 blades get scarred up a little from striking fire steels.

A2 holds up a lot better, but you might still be left with some marks.

Stainless isn't worth worrying about. It holds up great.

I don't mind reasonable wear and tear on my users though. That's what they're for.

True story: My first handmade knife was a Charles May Skifa Scandi. It came with a fire steel so the first thing I did was strike that thing and send sparks flying. Then I noticed very slight burn marks on the spine. My palms got sweaty and I got all kinds of nervous about having an expensive knife that might melt in my hands or something. I called Charles May and asked him about it. He very gently said (in his southern drawl): "What you gotta do is knock the new off that knife. take it out into the woods and use it. Start some fires with it."

It's worthy advice.

I just love that handle configuration on that patch knife! If you get a chance could you post a spine shot of that one?

Thanks! I really love the handle configuration too. I received the JouFuu sheath for it yesterday and couldn't be happier with this set up!

Thanks for posting that! I was just wondering the other day if this configuration existed. Very cool.

Unfortunately for my bank account, I stumbled upon this forum subsection a couple weeks ago... and the Fiddleback Friday thread. Now with less money in the bank and two brand new very cool knives, I search for sheaths... and patiently await todays Friday thread : )
